His Darkest Secrets
“Are you alright, Charlotte?” Elaine’s familiar voice rang from the other end of the phone, her tone laced with genuine concern.
Charlotte leaned against the counter in the kitchen, her fingers gripping the phone tightly. “I’m fine,” she replied, though her voice betrayed the turmoil bubbling inside of her.
Elaine, ever perceptive, wasn’t convinced. “Fine? Really? Because you sound like you’re ready to either scream or cry, or both.”
Charlotte let out a shaky laugh, running a hand through her hair. “It’s just… everything. Being here, dealing with him, dealing with this house, it’s a lot.”
“Him,” Elaine repeated, her tone teasing now. “By ‘him,’ you mean the very wealthy, very broody Mr. Astor Harrington, right?”
Charlotte rolled her eyes, though a smile tugged at her lips. “Yes, him.”
“I don’t know why you’re complaining,” Elaine said. “If I were in your shoes, I’d be taking bubble baths in that mansion every night and letting Mr. Harrington brood all he wants. I mean, come on, Charlotte, the man is gorgeous.”
Charlotte sighed. “He’s also infuriating, controlling, and…”
“Gorgeous,” Elaine interrupted, her laugh echoing through the phone.
“You are even more impossible than him,” Charlotte muttered, laughing out loud.
Elaine has always been a teaser and always find a way to do so. But right now, he needed to be strict and judge accordingly, but that wasn't happening.
“But seriously,” Elaine said, her tone softening. “Are you okay? Is Jasmine okay?”
“We’re fine,” Charlotte said, her voice quieter now. “Jasmine loves it here, but…” She trailed off, unsure how to put her unease into words.
“But what?” Elaine pressed.
Charlotte hesitated. “There’s something off about this place, Elaine. About him. I can’t put my finger on it, but it feels like… like I’m walking into a trap.”
Elaine was silent for a moment before speaking. “Charlotte, if you ever feel like you’re in danger, you have to leave. No amount of money is worth your safety, or Jasmine’s.”
“I know,” Charlotte said softly. “I just… I don’t have all the answers yet.”
“Well, until you do,” Elaine said firmly, “just remember I’m here. Call me anytime, even if it’s just to rant about Mr. Harrington’s jawline.”
Charlotte laughed despite herself. “Thanks, Elaine. I needed that.”
“Anytime,” Elaine replied. “Now go take a deep breath, and don’t let that man get under your skin too much.”
Charlotte ended the call, a smile lingering on her lips. Elaine’s lighthearted teasing always managed to lift her spirits, even when the weight of her circumstances felt unbearable.

Later that evening, Charlotte found herself in the study with Astor. He was reviewing documents, his expression sharp and focused. She stood by the window, debating whether to speak up about her concerns.
Before she could say anything, Astor’s voice cut through the silence. “Is there something you want to say, Charlotte?”
She turned to face him, her chest tightening at the intensity of his gaze. “I want to know what’s really going on here,” she said, her tone firmer than she expected.
Astor raised a brow. “What do you mean?”
“You know what I mean,” Charlotte said, stepping closer. “The locked room, the cryptic comments from your father, the way everyone here looks like they’re walking on eggshells, what aren’t you telling me?”
Astor’s jaw tightened, and he stood, closing the distance between them. “Charlotte, you agreed to this arrangement. That’s all you need to focus on.”
Her frustration boiled over. “You keep saying that, but how am I supposed to focus on anything when I feel like I’m being left in the dark? You’re hiding something, Astor. I can feel it.”
Astor’s eyes darkened, his voice dropping. “You don’t want to know the answers to the questions you’re asking.”
“Yes, I do,” Charlotte shot back, her voice trembling with anger.
The tension between them crackled like a live wire, neither willing to back down.
Before Astor could respond, the door creaked open, and Jasmine peeked inside. “Mommy? Daddy?” she said, her voice small.
The shift in Astor was immediate. His rigid posture softened, and the storm in his eyes cleared as he turned to face Jasmine. “Hey, kiddo,” he said, his tone gentle. “What’s up?”
Jasmine stepped inside, holding her favorite doll. “I had a bad dream,” she said, looking between them.
Charlotte’s anger melted away as she knelt down, opening her arms. “Come here, sweetheart.”
Jasmine ran to her, burying her face in Charlotte’s shoulder. Astor crouched beside them, his hand resting lightly on Jasmine’s back.
“You’re safe,” he said softly. “Nothing’s going to hurt you.”
The tenderness in his voice caught Charlotte off guard. For a moment, she saw a side of him that she hadn’t expected, a side that made her chest tighten in ways she didn’t want to examine too closely.
Jasmine’s sniffles subsided, and she looked up at Astor. “Can you read me a story?”
Astor hesitated, glancing at Charlotte.
She nodded, her voice soft. “Go ahead.”
Astor scooped Jasmine up, carrying her out of the room. Charlotte watched them go.

That night, Charlotte lay in bed, staring at the ceiling. Her earlier argument with Astor replayed in her mind, along with the way he had softened when Jasmine entered the room.
She wanted to believe he could be trusted, but the nagging feeling in her chest refused to let her rest.
As she turned onto her side, she noticed something unusual. A small envelope had been slipped under her door, barely visible in the dim light.
Her pulse quickened as she sat up, reaching for the envelope. She opened it carefully, her hands trembling as she pulled out a single sheet of paper.
The note was handwritten, the letters sharp and deliberate:
“I know his darkest secret. Do you? I have answers to your questions.”
But, who could this be?
Charlotte’s breath caught in her throat as she read the words again and again, her mind racing. Who had written this? And what secret were they talking about?
She glanced toward the door, her heart pounding. The note raised more questions than answers.
