Bound By Shadows
That evening, Charlotte stood outside Astor’s grand villa, her heart pounding as she stared at the massive iron gates.
She hesitated, clutching her bag tightly, as Astor’s proposition replayed in her mind.
The numbers had been staggering.
Five million dollars!
Enough to change her and Jasmine’s lives forever. But the price of accepting such a deal weighed heavily on her chest.
She stepped forward reluctantly, pressing the intercom button. A voice crackled through, cold and sharp. “Who is this?”
“It’s Charlotte Walker,” she said, her voice trembling slightly.
There was a brief pause before the gates clicked open, swinging inward with mechanical precision. Charlotte swallowed hard and began walking, the crunch of gravel under her shoes echoing in the still evening air.
By the time she reached the front door, Astor was already waiting. He leaned against the doorway, his grey-brown eyes unreadable as they swept over her.
“7:30pm?”
“You’re late,” he remarked coolly.
Charlotte straightened, not wanting to let him intimidate her. “I’m here, aren’t I?” she shot back, her tone sharper than she intended.
Astor raised a brow, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “Fair enough. Come inside.”
\---
Astor led her to a sleek sitting room, gesturing for her to take a seat. She remained standing, her arms crossed defensively.
“You’ve made your decision?” Astor asked, his tone calm but expectant.
Charlotte hesitated, the weight of her choice threatening to crush her. “Five million,” she said finally, her voice steady despite the turmoil raging inside her. “That’s a lot of money.”
“It is,” Astor agreed, his expression unchanging. “And all I need from you is thirty days. You, Jasmine, here, playing the roles I need you to play.”
Charlotte clenched her fists, her anger bubbling to the surface. “You make it sound so simple,” she snapped. “Do you have any idea what you’re asking of me? Of Jasmine?”
Astor’s gaze hardened. “I know exactly what I’m asking,” he said coldly. “And I also know what I’m offering you in return. Stability. Security. A future for your daughter.”
“My daughter?” Charlotte asked surprised by the way he called it.
Astor smirked, “our daughter or rather my daughter…”
“As if you knew her six years ago..” Charlotte remarked.
Astor raised a brow, “can we not talk about this right now?” He demanded but he got no reply he said, “good.”
Charlotte looked away, her chest tightening.
“Do we have an agreement or not?” Astor pressed, his voice low and unyielding.
Charlotte exhaled slowly, her shoulders slumping. “Fine,” she said, the word bitter on her tongue. “We have an agreement.”
\---
The move happened quickly. The following day, a sleek black car arrived at Charlotte’s apartment. Two men in suits stepped out, their movements swift as they began loading her and Jasmine’s belongings. Jasmine clung to Charlotte’s side, her wide eyes darting between the strangers and the car.
“Charlotte ?” Elaine called from behind as they both embraced.
“I had no choice, this is all I can do to secure my daughter's future…” Charlotte whispered in her embrace.
“It's fine.. do take care and don't hesitate to call me anytime..” Elaine said. She held Jasmine's hand and tapped her cheeks, “be a good girl like you've always been okay?”
Jasmine nodded.
“Mommy, where are we going?” she asked softly.
“To a new house,” Charlotte replied, forcing a smile. “It’ll be nice, you’ll see.”
Jasmine seemed unconvinced but nodded, trusting her mother’s words.
When they arrived at the villa, Astor was waiting again, his hands in his pockets as he watched them step out of the car. Jasmine’s face lit up when she saw him, and she ran toward him without hesitation.
“Daddy!” she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around his leg.
Astor stiffened slightly before crouching down to meet her gaze. “Hey, kiddo,” he said, his voice softer than Charlotte expected.
Charlotte stood a few feet away, her arms crossed. “We’re here,” she said flatly.
Astor straightened, his cool demeanor returning. “Good. Follow me.”
\---
The first few days at the villa were tense, to say the least. The staff treated Charlotte with a mix of curiosity and suspicion, their whispers following her through the halls. Jasmine, on the other hand, seemed to adapt quickly, her laughter filling the once-quiet spaces as she explored her new surroundings.
Astor remained distant, their interactions limited to a brief, clipped conversations. His focus was on appearances, ensuring that every detail of their arrangement would satisfy his father’s strict conditions.
“You need to stop scowling,” Astor said one evening as they sat in the dining room.
Charlotte glared at him from across the table. “And you need to stop pretending this is normal.”
Astor smirked faintly, unfazed by her tone. “It doesn’t have to be normal. It just has to work.”
Every conversation felt like a battle, every glance a challenge.
\---
Late one night, Charlotte found herself wandering the halls, unable to sleep. The grandeur of the villa felt oppressive, its silence amplifying her thoughts. She paused by an open doorway, she overheard people talking and decided to stand to listen.
“...he’s running out of time,” a deep voice said, it was low and serious.
Charlotte froze, a bit curious. She leaned in closer, her back pressed against the wall as she strained to hear more.
“If he doesn’t fulfill the conditions soon, the board will move against him,” another voice replied. “He could lose everything.”
Her heart raced as the words sank in. They were talking about Astor, about his inheritance.
“What about the woman and the child?” the first voice asked.
“They’re his ticket to securing it,” the second voice said. “But if anything goes wrong…”
The rest of the sentence was lost as the voices grew fainter, they were moving away.
Charlotte stood there for a moment, her mind racing. The stakes were higher than she knew, the pressure on Astor was more intense than he had said.
But, who were those?
The laundry ladies?
“No! Those voices belonged to guys….” Charlotte remarked.
She returned to her room, her thoughts running wild.
