Chapter 19 A Political Party
Daniel’s phone rang just then.
“Yes, I’m with them”, frowning, he spoke into his phone, motioning to me to get in the car as his uncle revved up the engine.
“Yes, she’s here too… we’ll be there soon”, he grumbled, not happy about whatever the other person was saying to him.
“Your mother always did have a problem with being tardy”, Benjamin tsked, apparently knowing what all the fuss was about. I raised a brow at him in question. He told me that I would know when we got there. He motioned to me to get in the front seat but Daniel effectively stopped me from doing so.
Throwing his uncle a cocky smirk, he got in the front,” I get carsick so I need to be in the front.”
I could see that Ben probably knew his nephew was bullshitting him but he chose not to question him.
“Oh! Hurry up girl, you only have an hour to get ready”, Daniel’s mother screeched out when we all walked in, throwing daggers at me with her glare as if I’d done something horribly wrong. I just gave her a clueless look.
“Oh and good job Daniel with bringing them home sooner”, she admonished her son, her tone immediately softening.
“What is going on?”, I gaped at the busy mansion, taking in the various workers- kitchen staff, decorators, party planners all rushing around, taking instructions from Mrs Kane.
The entire mansion was being set up for some sort of gathering I supposed. But what for?
“This year’s senator election is almost upon us. So like every year, our father is hosting a political party for the current senators who he wants to be replaced and the perhaps to be senators who are running for candidacy for their opposition’s position”, a blonde girl chirped to me, appearing out of nowhere.
I blinked at her in surprise.
“I’m Stacy, Daniel’s younger and much cuter sister. It’s really nice to meet you”, the child continued on, bringing a hand out for me to shake.
“Well, hello there Stacy. I must tell you those are some very big words for such a little girl” I gushed when she grinned up at me. She looked to be about at the start of middle school maybe… she did look like her brother, but they had vastly different temperaments, I realized, looking to and from her brother’s frowning face and her widely smiling one.
“Stacy, go with your brother. I need to take Ayesha to get ready… since she’s already so late. I don’t know why you insisted on her attending this extremely upscale social occasion, Benjamin. She’s not even well versed in proper etiquette yet”, Mrs Kane rattled on about me like I wasn’t even there.
A lot of tension filled the air but it was cheerily broken by little Stacy’s unaware words,” But I wanna go with the pretty lady. Daniel will just make me sit in one place and tell me to shut up. I’m not going with him.”
I couldn’t help but chortle when she stomped her feet in vehemence. She might not have her brother’s attitude but she certainly had his stubbornness.
“Don’t let it get to your head… she thinks that our hairless cat is pretty too”, Daniel grumbled under his breath, running the moment.
“Ugh, fine. Come with us then. But don’t mess around, we don’t have time. Daniel, your father is in the banquet hall, he asked me to tell you to once again check if everything is in order or not.” And with that, Daniel’s mother swept me away with her before I could even offer Stacy to grab my hand but the little minx managed to keep up with the six feet creature’s massive strides. Her tall frame just added to her intimidation….she was like one of those ancient Amazon women… just bitchier and nastier.
No wonder Daniel was so tall.
We entered a parlor where a hairdresser stood in waiting, her dark pink hair catching my eyes. She brightened up immediately as we stepped in.
“She’ll do your hair and makeup. And your dress is in the bedroom at the end of this hallway”, the Amazon woman instructed me and I nodded furiously, trying to be as compliant as possible.
Yup, that’s what I was going to call Daniel’s mother now… Amazon woman.
“And be quick please, will you?”, she rudely said to the woman who was holding what looked like a makeup box in her hand. The poor thing let out a forced,” Yes, of course, Mrs Kane.” Hurriedly setting out the dresser table with her tools.
Good, so I wasn’t the only one this woman scared the crap out of.
Daniel’s POV
“So tell me then uncle, don’t you think you’re a little too old for Ayesha? I mean you are old enough to be her father… how does that make you feel?”, I asked my uncle, earning an aghast look from him. Like he couldn’t believe what I’d just said.
“What are you so shocked about Benjamin? My son is just stating facts”, my father added, grinning to himself.
He was definitely enjoying me embarrassing Ben.
There was still time for the politicians to arrive so I decided I would goad him even more, I had already hired a private investigator just yesterday to look into Ayesha’s case. I expected a call from him within the week, with everything I needed to know.
But in the meantime, it would be better for me to find out as much as I could about this whole facade on my own.
“Well, she likes me for who I am. And I think that she’s much more mature than any other girl her age”, he defensively replied.
If she was so ‘mature’ and smart…. Why the fuck was she making the stupidest decision of her life and marrying this sorry excuse of a man?
And likes him for who he is?! That was such bullshit! What exactly did she like…. his stocky bulging frame…. his shaggy beard…. his short height… the fact that he was well over forty… oh spare me!
I wanted to say it all out loud but it was better if my uncle didn’t find out that I was dead set on breaking his engagement.
That would just make it harder for me to do so.
