Chapter 54 Heavy Rain

Chapter 54 Heavy Rain
Sarah

"Not tasty?" she snickered, noticing my distress. "It's edible," the hostess assured me. "One oyster is worth as much as your weekly salary as a courier. Enjoy it while you can. Where else would you eat something you ordinary people can't afford?"

I gripped my fork tightly.

"Kate, change your tone and the conversation. What's the point of all this?" Shawn became visibly angry. He even threw down his cutlery. He made it clear he was fed up with his fiancée's temper. His lips curled in displeasure.

"Oh, yes, you're right! We're here for a different reason," she blotted her duck-like lips with a napkin. "This news is a shock! I couldn't even imagine I had a sister. Wow! I called Mom and Dad, but they insist I'm an only child."

"But the test showed..." I added, my voice trailing off.

"Yes, I know! But it can be faked, right?" she arched her eyebrows contemptuously.

"It wasn't me who did the test, Shawn did."

"We could do another one," he suggested.

"Oh, it's already eight o'clock, Mom and Dad will be in touch soon. Let them tell us everything themselves!"

Kate left the kitchen for only a few seconds, then returned with a laptop in her hands, which she placed in the center of the table.

"Okay, I'm making a video call. Mom and Dad are currently vacationing in the Caribbean, so you'll only be able to see them via video," the girl explained in a pompous voice, pressing the call button.

So far, all I could see were our faces flickering on the video and a gray background. I was very nervous, counting down the seconds until the important moment. Then suddenly her lips parted, and something flickered on the screen. Taking a deep breath, I held it, clenching my fists under the table. I'm about to see my father...

"Okay, Shawn and... Sarah, we can't talk now. The chef just called us for dinner! They caught a lobster and cooked it right away. We need to eat it while it's still warm!" Lenay chuckled.

"I love you!" Kate blew them a kiss, then waved.

"We miss you too, sweetie! See you very soon."

And I didn't even have time to say goodbye. The connection was lost. The picture faded. She only said goodbye to her. And in such a cooing tone! As if I were definitely out of place here.

That was basically the entire conversation with my parents. But a strange aftertaste remained in my soul...

I didn't really understand anything. It felt like they were making it all up as they went along. And we talked for no more than three minutes.  White and Lenay were clearly in a hurry; they had more important things to do.

She slammed the lid of her laptop shut and turned to face us.

"Strange details, I knew nothing about that!" She shrugged in surprise. "Oh well, we'll talk to them later. Let's not ruin their vacation... And you, Sarah, it's time for you too, I suppose?"

"Yes, you're right, I have to go!" I jumped up abruptly. My legs carried me toward the exit.

I felt like it would have been better to leave everything as it is. There was no need to dig up the past. In the end, this whole situation just seemed even more confusing.

"Sarah!" Shawn tries to slow me down, but I'm already putting on my shoes and yanking the front door open.

"Thank you for dinner, Sarah," I say quietly, but my sister doesn't respond.

"I'll walk you home."

"Don't worry, Shawn," she ran her long nails down his strong, toned arm. "Let's call her a taxi." She leaned closer to his ear, giggling, and whispered. "I missed you..."

"I'll call a taxi myself," I snapped loudly and ran out into the building. Running to the elevator, I pressed the call button hard. I still didn't understand what was going on inside me. The evening had been tense, uncomfortable.

This isn't how I imagined my meeting with my sister or my parents. It all happened so quickly, emotionlessly, in a rush. Impossible. She looked at me like I wasn't her own family! With a hint of jealousy in her gray-green eyes.

Did she somehow figure out what Shawn and I had done? Damn... And she saw I was wearing an expensive dress, too.

That's probably why she was so abrupt with me. She guessed he'd given me that dress. As I rushed out of the building, I was immediately met with a wall of rain. And it turned out it had started raining outside.

I was soaked to the skin in a second... So where should I go?

Nowhere.

For now, to Shawn... And then I'll have to decide something! Look for a job, a place to live. I am relying only on myself again and on continuing to live the way I did before meeting Shawn.

Well, I'm even more comfortable... Alone. I was so nervous about it all that my head started to hurt, my ears started to ring, and darkness flashed before my eyes.

Bib!

I jumped up at the sound of a loud car horn! I couldn't understand how I'd ended up right in the middle of the road so quickly.

Two bright flashes of headlights came around the corner. I was right under them. In the distance, I heard Shawn's anxious cry and the sharp sound of brakes. It was like I'd been hit hard!

My whole life flashed before my eyes...

I thought it was the end for me. I think I felt a strong blow. And then I blacked out completely. I don't remember anything, I don't understand. I'm surrounded by icy darkness, and I wander in it, unable to find peace.

And then I see a flash. I see my dad! They're hurrying somewhere. I seem to be observing this strange and bleak scene from the outside.

“Filthy scum!”

“A flaw in nature.”

“Such defective children have no place on this earth!”

Their curses reach my clouded consciousness. Lenay left a tiny bundle right in the middle of the road... Not just leave it, but heartlessly throw it onto the asphalt.
