CHAPTER 14
NOVEMBER
Now, I know why I've never been to one of these things.
It's an excuse for rich people to come and flaunt their money and talk about nothing but money and properties.
We've been here for just an hour and I feel like going back to the comfort of my bed although, I'd only feel bad for my dress and the way I look today.
"Do you want anything to drink?" Kalmon asked and I shook my head, he nodded and went towards the bar anyway.
This hall was designed into perfection, the black and silver curtains looking more expensive that the dress I had on.
I felt eyes on me but, I didn't let that affect me, that's all rich snobby people knew how to do best: look at people and find a flaw.
"Hi, you look good, your dress is very beautiful" a tall, very beautiful and slim lady said to me, admiring my dress.
"Thanks"
"Who made it?" She said smiling, but there was an edge to her smile that made me know it was fake.
I knew it. She was too good to be true "Anita Alabi" I answered anyway, ignoring her dirty look.
"Woah, you must be pretty rich then, oops, I forgot, you're here with Kalmon of course he wouldn't let you come here looking like the cheap slut that you are" she said, keeping a satisfied smirk on her face I can't believe she just said that to me, oh, what I'd give to whoop her ass right here, right now.
"Well, I can't particularly waste my time on a rich s—"
"Baby, I've been looking all over for you" I heard a voice I know too well, cut me short from talking back at that bitch.
"I've been right where you left me" I replied in confusion.
Wait! Did he say baby?
"Oh, Hi Amira, I didn't see you there" What a liar, he did see her.
"Whatever" she said and left.
"What did you think you were doing?" Of course, he was too sweet to be true.
"It's called defending myself" I retorted "Well, your self-defense would have cost me a deal" he said sternly "So, should I let anyone insult me and not do anything about it? You're pathetic" I said and walked away from him to find a place to sit.
"Look, I didn't—"
"Good evening everyone, and welcome to the FEED THE POOR fundraising event, we are so happy to have you all here" the host said, flashing us his million-dollar smile.
The host called on different people to give speeches and everyone that came bored me. I felt like the boredom was going to murder me.
Right now, all I want to do is give the money I have to give and get the fuck out of here.
"It's now time for the auction" the host said, and everyone was quiet.
The first item came up, it was a painting, done by someone I have never heard of in my life.
Time went by and I didn't see anything that caught my attention.
Just then, a painting came up, and it was so pretty, confusing, but pretty.
It had like a garden with so many pretty flowers, but the flowers were withering and then a girl was sitting on the ground, holding a bunch of flowers. We were only given her side view.
It was like the harmattan season and the girls as holding the flowers for the last time before everything withered away.
"The painting is called November" the host said.
It had my name! When I saw that harmattan feeling in the painting, I knew it had to be one of the months, but I didn't think it would be November.
"By Casper Chukwunonso"
Casper?
Oh My God.
"Bidding starts at fifty thousand Naira" the host revealed.
"70" a lady shouted "80" I heard my voice yell; it made the people around to look at me.
Hell, even Kalmon looked at me, he looked shocked, but he didn't say a word.
"80 thousand for the very pretty lady in yellow" he said and gave a short laugh.
"90" that same lady said, smirking at me.
I won't give up.
"100" I yelled, and I heard gasps from around the table I sat.
What was wrong with this people? What did they think I couldn't afford it? I'm about to prove their black asses wrong.
"120" the lady yelled "150" I yelled back.
"150! Going once, going twic—"
"250" a male voice interjected, and I gasped with my eyes wide open, looking at the person that just crushed my dreams.
"250 for Mr. Knight" the man said.
Oh, fuck him.
I couldn't even talk, I felt betrayed.
How dare he?
"How dare you?" I whispered to him.
"What? I really liked the painting, and I didn't want to be dragged into the fight between you and that lady" he gave a short laugh, but a smile was playing on his lips.
"Man, fuck you" I said and paused My eyes widened at the realization of what I had just said.
He was surprised or, more like amused because, he still had that smile on his face.
"Oh my God, sir I'm very very so—"
"Don't fucking call me sir. I gave you the permission to call my name for tonight, I think I can handle a little vulgarity" he said, and I shut my mouth.
Me and my fat, large, leaking mouth.
Whosoever this kind man was, we'd need him in the office, not the usual dragon that graced us with his presence.
