Chapter 69 – Hard Truths

Isabelle Reinhart.

Three weeks had drifted past since the arrival of the twins, and life seemed to be moving forward for everyone. Emily and Noah were wrapped up in their world of parenthood, and it warmed my heart to see them so happy. But lately, I had been feeling a bit lonely. I didn't want to intrude on their family moments, so I kept my distance, meeting them only occasionally.

My days were a mix of work, occasional visits with Alex and the new parents, and spending my evenings with Ace. The hospital had almost become a second home. I'd leave the office, hop on the train, and make my way to his room. The receptionist would offer a sympathetic smile, recognizing me as a familiar face.

Sitting there by Ace's side had become a daily ritual. But today was different. Today, exhaustion weighed heavily on my shoulders, and the burden of it all felt almost too much to bear alone. As I entered his room, a wave of weariness swept over me, as if the weight of the world had settled on my shoulders.

I sank into the chair beside his bed, my gaze fixed on his peaceful face. His chest rose and fell in a steady rhythm, a reassuring reminder that he was still here, even though he remained lost in his unconscious state. I reached out and took his hand in mine, our fingers interlocking just as they had done so many times before.

But today, the tears that had been threatening to spill finally broke free. Silent sobs wracked my body as I rested my head against his chest, listening to the steady beat of his heart. It was my refuge, the one thing that hadn't changed amidst all the chaos.

"I miss you," I whispered, my voice barely audible in the quiet room. "Everything's been so hard without you.”

My words hung in the air, a plea that I hoped somehow, in some small way, he could hear.

“I don’t know how to go on without you, Ace. Come back to me,” I sobbed into his chest, craving the way his hand would crawl up my back and soothe me.

The room felt heavy with emotions. The minutes stretched into a timeless haze as I clung to him, the minutes blurring and I didn’t realise how long I stayed there with him.

“You’re going to love the twins, you know? Zoe definitely has your eyes,” I said to him, my tears ruining his hospital gown but I couldn’t care less.

My heart bared itself to him, letting him in on the heartache that had been churning within me. It was like the dam holding back my feelings had finally broken, and I let it all out, the tears flowing freely.

The next day had dawned, and a scheduled meeting awaited our attention. Alex and I sat side by side in his car, en route to the restaurant where the meeting was set to take place. While the purpose of the journey was clear, my thoughts were still tangled up in the emotions of the previous night.

"Is everything okay, Isabelle?" Alex's voice interrupted my thoughts, and I turned to him, offering a small smile.

"Yeah, I'm alright," I replied, though my response felt more automatic than genuine.

The weight of the night before, with the release of emotions, had left me feeling drained and exhausted. I was counting the hours until the day would conclude, longing to be back at the hospital by Ace's side.

Alex's concerned gaze lingered on me for a moment. "You seem a bit off. You sure you're okay?"

His words were a reminder that the mask I was trying to put on wasn't as effective as I had hoped. I mustered another smile and nodded. "Yeah, just lost in thought."

Alex glanced back at the road, then back at me. "You know, Isabelle, I get how much Ace means to you. But at some point, you need to consider moving forward."

His words hit a nerve, piercing through my defenses. As much as my heart yearned for Ace's recovery, the harsh reality loomed that he might never wake up.

“I know it's tough," Alex continued, his voice gentle. "But you can't keep clinging to him forever. You need to consider the possibility that he might never wake up. You can't put your life on hold indefinitely."

His words were a wake-up call, a jolt to confront a truth I'd been avoiding. The idea of letting go, of potentially finding happiness elsewhere, felt like a betrayal to Ace and the relationship we shared.

“I'm not suggesting you forget about him," Alex added quickly, as if sensing my thoughts. "But you deserve happiness, Isabelle. Maybe, someday, you could meet someone who could bring a little bit of light back into your life."

A sigh escaped my lips, and I stared out of the car window, watching the scenery blur by. "I appreciate your concern, Alex. But right now, I'm not ready for that. Especially not with someone who's not Ace."

His understanding nod and the comforting touch of his hand on mine eased the tension in the car. "I hear you. Just remember, we're here for you."

I gave him an understanding nod and closed my eyes, resting my head back on the headrest.
