145: The truth and survivor
Hayley's POV
The night was full of the sound and smell of battle, but there was an undercurrent to it. The artifact throbbed in my hands, a lively power forming the shield that kept rogue after unyielding rogue at bay over and over. I could feel it flowing through me, embracing me with power, shielding me, and making my sister strong.
Aiden fought at my back; his beautiful fluid, lanky limbs struck hard and fast with a savage force that came from deep within him. Had kept me anchored as the storm unfurled, our thread becoming a rope to climb up by.
"Aiden, watch out!" I called, knocking aside a blow using an energy discharge from the artifact.
Said and dodged a lunge by the rogue in question. "Thanks, Hayley. We were holding them at bay, but we need to stem the tide.
But I remained intent upon the relic and drank deeper from its power. A wall bubbled into existence around our forces, giving us a brief respite.
For an instant, the rogue forces hesitated... their cockiness suddenly shaken by our newfound leverage. Yet even as we advanced, the unease remained-a sense of malice lurking just beyond the margin.
A figure approached from the ranks of rogues, his presence formidable and oddly kissed with a bit. The pack fell silent, all of our world slowly coming down to this spectacle about to happen in front of us.
Aiden breathed his name, disbelief and recognition mingling together. "Ethan."
The rogue leader Ethan smirked, his eyes locking with Aiden in a challenge of sorts as well as something else. "Hello, brother."
The announcement reverberated through the pack; everyone was stunned into a shocked silence. Before us stood an enemy we never knew was there-one of Aiden's long-lost siblings thought to be dead or missing.
„Ethan, was passer?" Aiden was angry and hurt; he asked if I could see his point.
Ethan's face darkened, shadows flashing through his eyes. "I survived. Alone. While in the pack, you were: The Golden Child.
I could see the anger boiling beneath his so strong I flinched, as if to protect myself from a blow about to come in my direction; his fists clenched at hand level while painful creases appeared unendingly drawn across our friend Aiden. "We thought you were gone. We searched everywhere."
A bitter laugh echoed into the night, Ethan. Obviously, not hard enough.
A web of past and deceit cracked like electricity between them. I sensed Aiden wrestling with himself.
And then, I whispered his name down the bond as best as I could and sent what little strength and compassion my aching bones would allow.
His eyes locked onto mine, the depths of them full of thanks and strength. Don't you know that, Hayley?
We have to protect the pack."
I nodded, bearing in mind the reality of his trust. "Together. We'll face this together."
Ethan sliced a flume of laughter through the air. "You actually believe that a relic of yours can stop us."
The power of the artifact thrumming in time with my resolve, I moved closer. "Ethan, we have what you do not. Unity."
He squinted, a hint of doubt creeping over his face. "Unity won't save you."
The artifact boosted defenses as the battle began again, with more intensity than we had ever seen before. Aiden and I, working together on the battlefield one more time, synced our movements again, trusted by that unbreakable bond between us to guide one another.
In the midst of such chaos, our actions were clear and purposeful, a sense of power driving us like nothing before. The artifact seemed to surge in response to our collective, its energies growing as we united.
The rogues hesitated, and their speed from earlier faltered when they saw us working together. For as long as he was opposed, there Ethan stood, looking at Aiden with a combination of defiance and what may have been confusion.
The heat between me and Aiden was gun on gasoline, so close to combustion my blood sizzled with each beat of the heart as Ethan came charging towards us with his eyes locking on Aidens in that fierce intensity. Tension eerily crackled the air, as if seconds on end lasted into heaven.
Aiden and the one he was fighting inched towards each other faster than fast. A war between siblings echoed through the clearing in a dance of conflict and history.
"Ethan, don't," Aiden begged in a shaky voice.
Something soft and tender slipped past the tough façade of Ethan, his expression flickering. "It's too late, Aiden."
Every motion Aiden made was fueled by desperation, and his blows were both exacting and measured. I could sense his internal strife as he weighed loyalty against the harshness of their position.
And channeling the power of it into a protective aura around Aiden. And the energy pulsed back, a direct result of our shared connection.
Determination fueled them, and with one final burst of energy, Aiden overpowered a stick-wielding Ethan, boxing him to the ground. They were the pack, a constant reminder of what was at risk.
"Aiden, please," he choked out. "We can help you."
His guts twisted, but beneath the usual placid façade, there was something else too: anger-though that moment of determination wavered and died before he could speak. He softened, and then his gaze hardened once more as he shook his head. "I chose my path, Aiden."
His words hung heavy over us, as though reflecting the present that our decisions had arrived at. His heart ached, knowing there was no simple fix, and Aiden's hand gripped harder.
Their unity proved our power; the pack rallied around us. Still unbroken, the strength of conviction surpasses even kinship.
The battle had cooled down, and the criminal forces drowned back into the shadows as dawn broke in.
Victory and relief echoed through the camp, a language of experience that we could all access.
Aiden stood next to me; they had the same look of victory and loss in his gaze. "We did it, Hayley. But at what cost?"
I wrapped my arms around him, pulling him tight. "We'll find a way forward. Together."
He received me with a warm cuddle that was comforting and reassuring; it put the uncertainty whispering in my head on mute. Our relationship was unbreakable, no matter how hard life became.
I felt a warmth begin to blossom, like the golden first light of day, and it was hope. Our hearts were connected by the bond to a greater tomorrow, one that only stronger people can save.
I had Aiden; we would get through anything. We faced an uncertain future, but together we could make a new life for ourselves-one forged from strength, love, and the power that lay between us.
