23: Birthday party
I stepped out of our car, my father immediately offered his hand to assist me and my mother, a gesture of chivalry that was so like him. I found my eyes wandering, trying to take in the extravagant surroundings. The place was decorated with a plethora of items that I couldn't even begin to identify. The flashing lights of cameras were overwhelming, causing me to blink rapidly. The clicks of the cameras were incessant, and the bright flashes of light were almost blinding.
Feeling my mother's hand on my arm, I let her pull me towards the red carpet that led into the Quinto's mansion. The sheer number of media personnel and cameramen was staggering to say the least. Reporters swarmed towards us, prompting our bodyguards to form a protective circle around us. These were the precautions the Quinto's had taken for our arrival.
A reporter directed a question at my father, but I was too preoccupied to listen to the query or its response. Instead, my gaze was fixated on a large projector in the distance. A secret smirk crept onto my face, unnoticed by all but my mother.
Her forehead furrowed in worry, and she raised an eyebrow at me. Leaning towards me, she whispered, "Stop smirking, Yvonne, they might notice it."
I nodded in agreement, trying to suppress my amusement. The evening had transformed my mother into a radiant figure. Among the three of us, she stood out distinctly. She was adorned in a simple yet elegant white dress that accentuated her still-curvaceous figure. Her towering height of 5'9 was further augmented by three-inch heels. My father's attention was understandably glued to her.
On this night, her beauty was undeniably the highlight. Her makeup was impeccably done, adding to her allure. Our matching red lips further drew attention to us.
Once my father was done answering, none of the reporters dared to question my mother. Her stern expression and cold gaze seemed to ward off any potential inquiries. Some of them might have wanted to ask me questions, but they refrained from doing so, especially with my mother by my side.
Finally, we were able to enter the mansion. Inside, my vision started to adjust after being assaulted by the flashing lights of the cameras.
"Oh my God! My soon-to-be co parent-in-law!"
Elyse Diana Quinto was breathtakingly beautiful tonight. She was adorned in a sequin dress that made her look like a celestial being, a fairy nonetheless. However, her shimmering, luxurious apparel failed to mask the unpleasant odor that she carried.
I watched her emotionlessly as she embraced my mother, who evidently seemed reluctant to reciprocate the hug. My mother didn't return the embrace; instead, she was the first one to let go, emotionlessly distancing herself from Mrs. Quinto.
Mrs. Quinto forced a smile. She is Kyle's mother. She's always been kind to me, just like her son. She feigns kindness when I am present, only to turn around and hurl all sorts of mean words at me when I am away.
"And oh my! My soon-to-be daughter-in-law is also here!" She exclaimed.
I wanted to retort, 'You're not so sure about that,' but I refrained. Was she certain that her son and I would make it to the altar? Our relationship was over the moment he betrayed me.
Several elegantly dressed women were glancing in our direction. My mother seemed bored, but she was, without a doubt, the most stunning and alluring figure present that night. And then there was me.
"Good evening, Aunt," I greeted her with a disingenuous smile.
She reciprocated my greeting and gave me a peck on the cheek. I quickly withdrew and moved closer to my mother. She then turned her attention towards my father. I noticed that my father was not interested in conversing with her, but being the gentleman that he is, he would never treat a woman in a way that might embarrass her.
We were guided to our designated seats. I surveyed the room. The whole place was ostentatiously decorated. The colorful details of the opulent birthday party sparkled around us.
Shortly after, the room filled up with more people. I spotted Tres, clad in a dark blue suit, accompanied by his date, Wada. They both looked perfect. Tres' parents were right behind them, appearing to be in a conversation with the parents of Tres' soon-to-be girlfriend.
I couldn't help but smile when my eyes met Wada's. She smiled back innocently and waved at me. I reciprocated her gesture.
That's when Tres looked in our direction. He came over and politely greeted my parents.
"Are we here for a wake?" He asked jokingly.
I rolled my eyes and nodded. He laughed, thinking I was just joking. But the truth is, I wasn't here to mourn, nor was I here to celebrate Luis' father's birthday, and certainly not to commemorate my anniversary with Luis.
I was only here to watch them grapple with remorse and shed tears of regret. That's all I wanted.
I went over to Aunt Trina. She was wearing an elegant yellow asymmetrical dress that made her look dazzling that evening. Uncle Shawn, on the other hand, looked handsome in a suit similar to the one Tres was wearing.
I greeted them both with a kiss on their cheeks. Aunt Trina was smiling from ear to ear as she looked at me.
"Yvonne, you look dangerously stunning this evening," she complimented, her words flattering me.
A sweet smile spread across my face, a reaction to her flattering words, making my heart flutter with joy.
"And you, Aunt, you look even more beautiful, as you always do," I managed to reply, returning the compliment.
Tito Shawn, along with many other people, couldn't help but praise me. Their compliments made me blush, a warm feeling of joy and embarrassment mixed together. It was as if my beauty was a magnet drawing them in, making them unable to resist the urge to compliment me.
As the clock struck eight, people continued to pour into the venue. It seemed like all the guests who had been invited were from wealthy families, including owners of massive hotels and luxurious resorts. Their presence added to the grandeur of the party.
I also recognized a few faces from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, and from other prestigious universities. They were all accompanied by their parents, which added an air of formality to the scene.
My father, who had been seated, rose from his chair and approached a man who seemed to be around his age. My eyebrows rose in surprise, as the man bore a resemblance to Zach, a friend of Tres.
"It's a pleasure to see you here, Mr. Herrer," my father greeted the man, his voice deep and resonating, oozing with confidence and authority.
I watched my father intently from a distance. His demeanor was serious and respectable, giving off an impression that he was not one for jokes, always maintaining a level of decorum.
"Likewise, Mr. Fuentes," the man responded, his tone cool and composed. "But please, there is no need for formality. We are not at a company meeting, we are at a birthday celebration," my father added, insisting on a more casual interaction.
The man chuckled at my father's words, the serious expression on his face faded away. He nodded in agreement, appreciating the lighter tone my father had introduced.
"Alright then, bro," the man finally replied.
My father responded with a thumbs-up. A chuckle escaped me as I saw this. Meanwhile, Mom was seated next to me, her gaze fixed on my father. She seemed to be enjoying this friendly interaction as much as I was.
In this gathering of distinguished individuals, there is no shortage of prominent figures, including Quinto, who was once renowned in the business world. However, their insatiable greed has ultimately led to the downfall and erasure of all their past achievements.
As I gracefully navigate through the grandeur of the event, a courteous waiter approaches me with a warm smile adorning his face. "May I offer you a glass of exquisite wine, madame?" he politely asks, extending a delicate flute glass towards me.
Accepting his kind gesture, I graciously respond, "Yes, please." With utmost care and precision, he pours a generous amount of the finest wine into the awaiting glass, its rich hues dancing with elegance.
Expressing my gratitude, I utter, "Thank you," appreciating the waiter's attentive service and dedication to ensuring a pleasurable experience for all guests.
With a genuine smile, the waiter replies, "You're most welcome, madame. I hope you thoroughly enjoy this enchanting evening, filled with delightful moments and captivating conversations."
As the night unfolds, I immerse myself in the enchanting ambiance, savoring the exquisite taste of the wine while engaging in stimulating conversations with the elite individuals surrounding me.
I nodded in acknowledgement as I stood at a vantage point, observing the multitude of guests making their grand entrance through the opulent entrance. Every face held a story, and anticipation hung in the air, as if secrets and whispers were about to unfold. Amidst the crowd, a familiar sight caught my attention—aunt Amber and uncle Mattias, accompanied by their eldest son, gracefully made their way into the venue. A smile crossed my face as I eagerly approached them, exchanging warm greetings and affectionate embraces.
As the grand birthday celebration commenced, the atmosphere grew even more vibrant. The jubilant melodies of laughter and mirth intermingled with the symphony of clinking glasses and the gentle hum of conversations. All eyes were drawn towards the center stage, where the man of the hour, Mr. Quinto, commanded attention and admiration. Applause erupted spontaneously, filling the spacious hall with thunderous appreciation, as the esteemed guests acknowledged his presence.
Amidst the resounding applause, I found myself momentarily engrossed in my own thoughts, my attention drawn to the delicate glass of wine that I held in my hand. Its deep crimson hue seemed to mirror the complexities of the evening—an exquisite blend of opulence, intrigue, and the remnants of Quinto's once prominent legacy. Lost in contemplation, I momentarily refrained from joining the boisterous applause, my focus ensnared by the swirling liquid within the glass.
Nevertheless, the room continued to reverberate with applause, and the air buzzed with anticipation for the evening's festivities. Conversations flowed like a melodic river, weaving tales and sharing anecdotes, as the guests relished in the joyous occasion.
As the night progressed, I found myself caught up in a whirlwind of conversations and interactions. The laughter of acquaintance, old and new, echoed through the halls, intertwining with the symphony of clinking glasses and shimmering chandeliers. Amidst the revelry, I couldn't help but marvel at the intricate tapestry of human connections and the ebb and flow of life's intricate dance.
And so, the evening unfolded, a symphony of celebration, camaraderie, and the bittersweet realization that even the mightiest of individuals can be consumed by their own inner demons. As I raised my glass in a silent toast, I couldn't help but ponder the delicate balance between ambition and humility, and the impermanence of all that we hold dear.
