Chapter 27

Anthony POV

A few days after Megan was discharged from the hospital, she decided to stay at her apartment, and I have avoided her ever since, I found it rather strange but maybe she is still dealing with shock. So, I am not so worried since Natalie will be staying with her now and then.

Known to many now, Higgins was my ex-lover, they tried to get me to do interviews on her death, but I declined. Who could want to hurt Higgins?? I mean she was crazy I must agree, but who kills women and children...especially. Coming from a mafia that's pretty heartless and cold. I sat in my office and stared at now an empty spot where Higgins would have been if she weren’t terminated, and sudden guilt washed over me, maybe I shouldn't have fired her, maybe she got involved with the wrong crowd, but she couldn't possibly need money. Megan doesn't know but Higgins also messaged me, stating that she wants three million dollars to leave Megan and me alone, but how was she killed almost two weeks ago, but collected money just last week? And I still didn't understand why she was still texting Megan up to the day before the conference, I needed to know, unless...

"Jace gets in here,” I barked.

"Ye...yes boss", stood before was a nervous Jace, trembling like leaves on a branch.

"The three million dollars, who did you give it to?"

"Higgins boss, I met her at the spot, just like you told me.”

I rubbed my eyes in frustration, "Jace did you meet Higgins face to face?"

"Well...", Jace stuttered.

"Well, what?" I slammed my fist against the desk.

"I didn't see her, but upon location, she was speaking into a speaker, and I was told to slowly place the bag of money on the ground and took my leave."

"Dam it Jace! That wasn't Higgins! That could have been anyone, We have been conned, The news says she was killed one week plus five days at the time, that simply means she died after arriving in Florida, she left Paris Thursday night, she possibly could have been killed anywhere between midday Friday because I emailed her a letter of immediate employment termination the Friday evening, and she didn't respond, knowing Higgins she would have put up a fight, the killer has Higgins cell pretending to be her, someone is threatening Megan's life and we need to find out who is this brave son of a bitch is,” Jace simply nod with understanding and left the room.

Ting!

My cell came to life with an incoming call.

"Tell me some good news Brandon.”

Brandon was my PI who investigates persons I wanted information on or people I needed to find,

"Well, her name is Stacey Jones, hometown is Manhattan, parents died in a freak accident, she is an only child, twenty-one years of age, current location unknown."

"Thanks, Brandon."

"Anytime, boss."

I ended the call, closed my eyes, and sat back in my chair thinking, Stacey Jones? Who are you and how are you link to me? What possible reasons could you have to help Darb escape, and having the audacity to show your face here at G.L.O.S.H.

My mind suddenly drifted off to Megan, I missed her, the way she swayed her hips, pouted her lips, and batted her eyelashes, I missed her vanilla scent, dark chocolate skin, and grey eyes, oh my lovely bunch of lilies, I licked my lips as I thought about her, running my hand across my crotch, I tried to calm my sexual urges down, but it was no use. I definitely will go see her tonight; I can't go another day without my baby.

Standing outside of Megan’s apartment, I knocked rapidly, one after the other.

"Coming!" I heard she cheerfully answered.

She opened the door and stood there in silence, the tension between us was thick and I didn't know the reason.

"Aren’t you going to let your husband— to be in,” I joked but Megan didn't even smile.

"Sure—come in,” she barely uttered.

I began to inspect inside her small apartment, at least it was decent, and it was clean.

"You can sit down you know,” she pointed to the sofa.

“Thank you and these are for you, a bunch of lilies—for you... my bunch of lilies,” I handed her a bouquet I bought at a near buy flower shop.

"Thank you,” she took the bouquet from me, walking towards a vase while sniffing the flowers.

After a while, she came and sat beside me.

"Anth— Anthony, I need to ask you something,” she nervously stated.

"Ok sure babe, what is the problem..."

"Did you kill her!” Megan blurted out, “Did you kill Higgins?” she added.

I was shocked I must say, but why would she think that?

"What? No! Why would you think that?"

"Because the night before the conference you kind of muttered that Jace—dealt with her.”

"No baby, I—she blackmailed me...well that's what I thought into giving her three million to leave us an alone, only to recently find out it wasn't her all us, babe, Higgins was long dead before we were threatened."

"That means her killer is still out there?" I saw the fear in her eyes, so I pulled her into an embrace.

"Hey, don't be scared, the police are doing all they can to catch this bastard."

"I missed you,” he whispered against my ear.

"I missed you more baby girl".

Letting her go, I stared at her, we bumped our foreheads together and closed our eyes. God, I love this woman and I knew she loved me, but being a mafia and a businessman, I had a lot of enemies and I feared that maybe I didn't have much time, there are going to be days where I'll have to be away for months maybe up to a year, but I will claim her as mine and protect her until my demise.

"Megan let's have our wedding next week, don't worry about anything, just agree with me for once."

"Okay,” she whispered. "Anthony?"

"Yes?”

"You still didn't tell who the man was, my driver that is, Mr. Blake."

I pulled away from Megan and she watched me keenly as I searched my pocket for my wallet, I took out an old picture I had tucked away, and held it up to her face.

"Babe is this the man you claimed to have driven you around?"

She took the picture from me and studied it.

"Yes, this is him, this is Mr. Bla—"

"Babe this is my dad's driver, his name is Mr. Black, not Blake, he isn’t British, the accent is fake, a part of his many personalities… he was diagnosed with Alzheimer couple of years back?"

“Alzheimer?” she chuckled nervously, "that's impossible, how did he manage to drive me around for days without having memory lapses.”

"I—I— don't know Meg."
