Chapter 88: The Blood Eclipse
Chapter 88: The Blood Eclipse
The Red Sky
“It’s bleeding,” Maya whispered.
Everyone looked up.
The moon once fractured silver now pulsed red. Not the soft glow of sunset, but the deep, sickening crimson of something alive and wounded.
The light washed over Lunar Heights, painting the skyline in blood.
Alex’s jaw clenched. “The Eclipse…”
Maya’s fingers flew over her scanner. “It’s starting early. The lunar cycle isn’t supposed to shift for another week ”
Lucas cut her off, voice grim. “Tell that to the sky.”
A low rumble rolled through the city, distant yet immense. Every wolf in Crescent Fang felt it a vibration in their bones, a call older than language.
Kara’s hand trembled. “It’s calling me again.”
Alex turned to her, gripping her arm. “You don’t answer it.”
Her eyes glowed faintly red in the moonlight. “You think I have a choice?”
Back in the Den, chaos rippled through the ranks. Warriors argued, alarms blared, and the floor lights flickered like dying fireflies.
Lucas barked orders, voice cutting through the noise. “Form defensive sectors! Maya, lock down the outer perimeter!”
Cain twirled his blades, smirking despite the tension. “You sure it’s not just bad weather?”
Maya shot him a glare sharp enough to kill. “You think the sky bleeding is weather?”
Alex ignored them all. He stood at the map table, studying the shifting energy signatures glowing red arcs sweeping across the holographic display.
The pattern was clear.
“It’s converging,” he muttered.
Maya frowned. “Where?”
He tapped the map.
“The old industrial district.”
Lucas stepped up beside him. “Ravenspire’s old base.”
Alex nodded. “They left something behind. Something that’s feeding the Eclipse.”
Maya’s expression darkened. “Then whatever it is we end it tonight.”
Crescent Fang moved through the city like shadows.
Fifteen wolves, armored and ready, darted across rooftops and alleyways. The wind carried the metallic tang of blood and ozone.
From above, the moon hung heavy, bleeding crimson over the skyline.
Alex ran at the front, his senses sharpened to a razor’s edge. Every heartbeat, every shift of air he felt it all.
Behind him, Kara moved in silence. Her presence was steady, but the red light clung to her like a second skin.
Lucas caught up beside him. “You trust her now?”
Alex didn’t look at him. “I never stopped.”
Lucas scoffed. “You’re going to get us all killed for a ghost.”
Alex’s gaze was cold. “She’s no ghost.”
A beat passed then Kara spoke quietly behind them.
“I can hear you, Lucas.”
He didn’t respond. But he didn’t argue again, either.
The industrial district was a skeleton.
Rusting cranes. Collapsed warehouses. The scent of ash and iron.
But deeper within, light pulsed faint and rhythmic, like a heartbeat under the ground.
Cain crouched low. “You seeing that?”
Maya nodded. “It’s not power lines. It’s organic energy.”
Kara closed her eyes, focusing. “It’s under us.”
They moved carefully down the crumbling stairwell into the sub-levels, the old Ravenspire tunnels.
The deeper they went, the hotter the air became. The walls glowed faintly with runes they didn’t recognize.
At the end of the tunnel, they found it
a massive crystalline sphere, half-buried in the floor, pulsing with molten red light.
Lucas hissed. “What in the hell ”
Maya’s voice cracked. “It’s a Heartstone. A living conduit.”
Alex stepped forward slowly. “To what?”
Kara’s voice was hollow. “To them.”
Before anyone could move, the light from the Heartstone flared.
The floor shook violently.
Then a voice filled the air.
Not sound. Not exactly. It was felt in blood, in bone, in thought.
“THE BRIDGE IS OPEN.”
Cain dropped to his knees, clutching his head. “Get it out !”
Maya screamed as her scanner shattered.
Alex tried to move forward, but the air had weight like gravity itself had multiplied.
And then the Heartstone cracked.
From within, shadows poured out, forming shapes that twisted into wolves made of smoke and red lightning.
Ravenspire wolves.
But not alive.
Kara’s eyes widened in horror. “They’re echoes. Memories given form.”
Lucas drew his weapon. “Then let’s make ‘em die twice.”
The pack surged forward.
The fight was chaos claws and fire, light and shadow.
Alex tore through two of the echo-wolves, his blade burning gold with every strike. Maya unleashed a storm of runes, explosions shaking the walls.
Lucas fought with brutal efficiency, covering Cain as he carved through the rear line.
Kara stood at the center, chanting in an ancient tongue light radiating from her hands as she tried to contain the Heartstone’s energy.
But the sphere was fracturing faster than she could mend it.
“Alex!” she shouted. “It’s feeding on me!”
He spun, slicing down another echo. “Then cut it off!”
“I can’t! It’s linked!”
“Then break the link!”
Kara screamed and the red light engulfed her.
Everything stopped.
The air froze. Sound died. Even the wolves turned to smoke mid-motion.
Alex looked up.
Kara was suspended in midair the red light forming wings behind her, her body outlined in searing white.
Her voice echoed, distant and layered. “It’s not just a link, Alex. It’s a bond. The Eclipse it’s inside me.”
“Kara ”
“If I stay here, it’ll consume everything.”
He stepped closer. “Then we’ll find another way ”
“There isn’t one!”
The light around her flared brighter, cracks of lightning shooting through the ceiling.
“I can contain it,” she whispered. “But not here.”
“Don’t you dare ”
Her gaze softened. “You once told me not to die for the pack.”
Her smile was heartbreak and defiance. “Maybe I can live for them instead.”
And then she vanished.
The light collapsed.
The echoes were gone. The Heartstone shattered, dissolving into ash.
Alex fell to his knees, the silence deafening.
Maya stumbled forward, shaking. “Where did she go?”
No one answered.
Lucas sheathed his blade, his expression unreadable. “She made her choice.”
Alex rose slowly, eyes still fixed on where she’d been.
“No,” he said quietly. “This isn’t over.”
He turned toward the tunnel exit, voice steady now. “We regroup. We find her. And then we end this Eclipse.”
Cain glanced at the shattered remains of the Heartstone. “And if she’s gone for good?”
Alex didn’t hesitate.
“Then I’ll tear the heavens apart to bring her back.”
And somewhere beyond the sky
Kara opened her eyes.
But the stars around her were wrong.
The void whispered her name.
And a thousand red eyes opened in the dark.
