Chapter 78: The Eclipse Deepens
The shattered remains of the nexus smoldered beneath Alex’s feet.
The ground was cracked and scorched.
The air hummed with fading shadow energy.
The crescent moon on his palm still burned faintly.
A lingering echo of Nyx’s touch.
The Elder knelt beside the broken core.
The black crystal had disintegrated into dust.
But the damage was already done.
Alex glanced at the sky.
The moon hovered overhead.
Its pale surface was marred by the violet eclipse.
The shadow covered nearly half its face.
And the darkness continued to spread.
The wolf within Alex stirred uneasily.
The nexus was destroyed.
But Nyx hadn’t retreated.
It had simply… shifted.
The Elder ran his fingers through the shadowy residue.
"Nyx isn’t trying to break the bond anymore," the Elder said softly.
Alex’s pulse quickened.
"Then what is it doing?"
The Elder wiped the ash from his hands.
"It’s corrupting the bond instead."
Alex’s jaw tightened.
His wolf growled.
"So if it can’t sever the moon’s tether," Alex said slowly, "it’s trying to poison it."
The Elder nodded grimly.
"Yes. The moon's energy will remain intact… but twisted into shadow."
Alex's gaze shifted back to the moon.
The eclipse mark pulsed faintly.
The silver glow now carried a slight, sickly violet hue.
The moon wasn't dying.
It was being tainted.
Transformed.
The Lunar Aegis held the bond.
But the moon’s energy was no longer pure.
Nyx wasn't trying to break the moon’s influence.
It was trying to claim it entirely.
The crescent mark on Alex's palm burned sharply.
The wolf inside him recoiled.
The sensation was familiar.
The grove.
Kara’s presence.
He clenched his fists and turned to the Elder.
"We need to get back to the city. Now."
The Elder didn’t question him.
The shadows had retreated from the mountain…
But the moon’s energy was stirring elsewhere.
Somewhere far more vulnerable.
The grove.
The descent down the mountain was brutal.
The ground was slick with frost and debris.
Alex ran with reckless urgency.
The Elder followed as best he could.
The crescent mark on Alex’s palm pulsed with rhythmic pain.
Not like the old scar’s warning signals.
This was different.
Urgent.
Desperate.
The wolf inside him surged forward.
Each step brought the grove’s energy into sharper focus.
The Lunar Aegis still held…
But the moon’s connection through the grove wavered.
The Eclipse Stone had stabilized the bond.
But Nyx was attacking from within.
Alex growled and pushed harder.
The city's distant skyline emerged through the trees.
The moon above was now half-consumed by shadow.
Its light was faint.
Cold.
Nyx was winning.
Alex and the Elder burst into the city just before dawn.
The streets were deserted.
The moon’s unnatural glow cast distorted shadows across the pavement.
They sprinted toward the grove.
The oak tree loomed ahead.
Its branches twisted unnaturally.
The leaves, once vibrant silver, were edged with black veins.
The Eclipse Stone pulsed faintly from within the bark.
The moonlight streaming through the branches shimmered violet.
Maya stood near the tree, blades drawn.
Cain knelt beside a wounded packmate.
The scent of burned fur and shadow energy filled the air.
Alex skidded to a halt.
"What happened?"
Maya turned, relief flashing across her face.
"Shadow constructs hit the grove an hour ago," she said breathlessly.
"Never seen anything like it."
Cain stood, blood streaking his arm.
"They didn’t hit the den," he added.
"Just the grove. They went straight for the tree."
Alex’s wolf bristled.
The tree was the Lunar Aegis's anchor.
Nyx was attacking the bond at its heart.
The Elder approached the oak and placed a hand on the bark.
The surface vibrated faintly beneath his touch.
He swore under his breath.
"What is it?" Alex demanded.
The Elder’s eyes were grim.
"Nyx has infected the stone."
Alex’s heart dropped.
His wolf growled low.
The Eclipse Stone had been the solution.
Now it was the target.
Alex placed his palm against the bark.
The crescent mark flared in response.
The tree’s energy flowed into him.
He braced himself…
And felt it immediately.
The moon’s energy still pulsed through the grove.
But threads of shadow coiled through the roots.
Cold. Foreign.
They twisted around the Lunar Aegis’s core.
Alex closed his eyes, focusing.
The shadow energy moved with purpose.
Like a parasite feeding off the moon's strength.
Nyx was no longer fighting the bond.
It was assimilating it.
Alex’s eyes snapped open.
"It’s trying to rewrite the moon’s essence," Alex said.
Maya’s brows furrowed.
"Rewrite it how?"
The Elder’s expression darkened.
"If Nyx succeeds, the moon will no longer provide lunar energy as we know it," the Elder said softly.
Cain’s eyes narrowed.
"Then what does it do?"
The Elder looked at the tree.
"It becomes a beacon for shadow energy instead."
Alex’s stomach turned.
If Nyx corrupted the moon’s essence…
The werewolves would no longer be connected to lunar strength.
They’d be tethered to the shadow.
Controlled.
Manipulated.
Consumed.
The Elder removed his hand from the tree and faced the pack.
"The infection is spreading through the lunar veins," the Elder said.
"But it hasn’t reached the core yet."
Alex’s wolf stirred anxiously.
"How do we stop it?"
The Elder gestured to the Eclipse Stone embedded in the tree.
"Nyx's corruption flows through the stone's surface," the Elder said.
"If we can purge the shadow from the stone, the tree will stabilize."
Cain adjusted his grip on his axe.
"How do we purge it?"
The Elder tapped his staff against the ground.
"The same way the bond was created through the Alpha's mark."
All eyes shifted to Alex.
He didn’t flinch.
The crescent on his palm burned hotter.
"It has to be me," Alex said.
The Elder nodded.
"You became the moon’s conduit during the ritual," the Elder said.
"You’re the only one who can force the corruption out."
Maya’s mouth pressed into a thin line.
"And what happens to him if he does that?"
The Elder hesitated.
"The shadow energy will fight back," the Elder said.
"The longer Alex stays connected, the more it will try to consume him."
Cain growled.
"Sounds like a trap."
"It is a trap," Alex said.
His wolf bared its fangs internally.
Nyx had been pushing him toward this from the beginning.
The scar.
The connection.
The Eclipse Stone.
It all led here.
Nyx wanted the Alpha of the Moon to touch the core again.
Because the Alpha was the strongest tether.
And if Nyx could claim Alex…
The moon would fall.
Alex straightened.
"We do it anyway."
Maya swore softly.
Cain shook his head.
"Alex"
"This isn't just about the pack anymore," Alex said firmly.
"It’s about the moon. The world. Everything changes if we fail."
Cain’s fists clenched.
"But if you let it take you"
"It won’t," Alex interrupted.
He took a steadying breath.
The moon was watching.
Waiting.
The grove trembled beneath his feet.
The wolf inside him steadied itself.
He met the Elder's gaze.
"What do I need to do?"
The Elder stepped back and raised his staff.
"Alpha of the Moon," the Elder intoned,
"Conduit of the Lunar Core, stand before the heart."
Alex knelt beside the tree.
The crescent moon on his palm glowed brighter.
The bark shifted beneath his hand.
The Eclipse Stone pulsed darkly behind the surface.
The Elder's voice rose.
"Channel the light. Purge the shadow."
Alex placed his palm against the bark.
The crescent mark connected instantly.
The tree's energy surged into him.
The shadows struck immediately.
Cold.
Sharp.
Malevolent.
Nyx’s voice whispered through the connection.
Welcome back, Alpha.
The grove groaned beneath the assault.
The moon above flickered violently.
The violet eclipse thickened.
The Lunar Aegis trembled.
And Nyx's voice seeped deeper into Alex's mind.
This time, the shadow murmured,
you will break.
