Chapter 93: Forgiveness.

Chapter 93: Forgiveness.
They returned home, and upon entering the living room, they found Denise cocooned in a blanket on the couch. "Why are you still up?" Dua asked, raising an eyebrow.
"Oh, I'm just waiting for one of my favorite shows to start. It's almost time," Denise replied, glancing at the wall clock and Dua scoffed.
"Your favorite shows at this hour? It’s really late! Don’t you have classes tomorrow?" Shane chimed in, trying to mask his concern with humor.
"It's Saturday tomorrow," Denise countered, her tone slightly defensive. Shane’s face shifted as understanding washed over him.
"Still, that’s not a great excuse for a high school student to be up this late," Steven chimed in, his voice carrying a hint of authority.
"Get up and go to bed right now!" Dua commanded, leaving no room for negotiation.
"Sis!" Denise sulked, her voice thick with disappointment.
"Right now, Denise!" Dua insisted, her tone final. With a sigh, Denise reluctantly rose from the couch and shuffled toward her bedroom.
Satisfied, Dua turned to retreat to her room, but as she climbed the stairs, she paused, exhaling deeply. "Are you alright?" Steven asked, concern etching his features.
"I'm okay, just a little tired," she replied, trying to catch her breath.
Steven reached for her, attempting to lift her in his arms, but she gently pushed him away. "I can walk on my own; I just need a moment," she insisted, taking in a deep breath.
Rolling his eyes at her stubbornness, he scooped her up anyway, carrying her toward the bedroom. "You’re ridiculous sometimes, you know that?" Dua nagged, though there was a hint of affection in her annoyance.
"When will you quit being stubborn?" Steven sighed.
“Next time, can you just let me be stubborn in peace?” she pouted as he laid her down gently on the bed and Steven could only shake his head.

Meanwhile, Shane lay restless in his room, contemplating the evening’s events when a knock on his door pulled him from his thoughts. "Who's there?" he asked, but received no reply. Curiosity piqued, he opened the door to find Denise standing there, clad in a sheer nightgown.
"Denise?" he stammered, caught off guard by her alluring look.
Denise pulled him into a passionate kiss, catching him off guard. He hesitated for a moment, but she pressed her lips against his more forcefully. Again, he pulled back, raising an eyebrow at her. "I hope you know what you're signing up for. I'm not a log of wood; I might lose my control," he warned, a blend of concern and desire clouding his voice.
"Exactly, that’s what I want! Lose your control, lose it," she urged, stepping forward again, but Shane instinctively moved back.
"Please, Shane… let’s have sex." The desperation in Denise's voice pierced through him, making him freeze. Her boldness stunned him, as she had always been shy, blushing at even the slightest compliment.
"What’s the matter?" he asked, his brow furrowing in concern.
"Let’s just have sex," she repeated, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears. "I heard it helps relieve emotional stress and pain."
“No… I won’t have sex with you,” he replied, his tone firm yet gentle. Denise's eyes widened in disbelief.
“All my life, I’ve never been with a woman. That’s not how I planned to live. I wanted to make love to the woman I love—someone who feels the same way. I want to stick with just one person,” he said, his voice steady.
“Then let’s do it,” she pleaded, an edge of desperation creeping into her tone. “You have feelings for me, and I think I do too!”
“But our motives are different. I want to make love because I love you, but you want sex to escape your pain. They’re two different things,” he said, and her gaze fell to the ground, laden with sadness.
“And sex isn't the only solution for pain,” he added softly. “There are healthier ways to cope.”
"You can talk to someone about it," he suggested.
“Who can I possibly talk to?” Her voice cracked, barely above a whisper. “My sister already has so much on her plate. She’s pregnant, and I can’t burden her. She’s done enough for me. I need to give her space.”
“That’s understandable, but what about me?” Shane gently pressed. “You can talk to me.”
“You’ve done enough for me too, I don't wanna bother you” Denise replied, shaking her head sadly.
“You’re not bothering me. Don’t ever think that,” Shane said, cradling her face gently.
Denise looked at him, her eyes heavy with tears. "I miss her, my mom. Of all my siblings, I'm the one who's closest to her... My sister was always working hard for the sake of our survival, and Des is little, so that made me the only one available to be with my mom. I grew so used to her that not being able to see her again makes life unbearable for me," she explained, her voice trembling with emotion.
Shane sighed in relief, his imagination having run wild with the idea that it was something deeper. He pulled her into a hug, trying to transmit the warmth of his understanding into her shivering form. "I understand, Denise, but that’s still no reason to give yourself away just like that," he said gently, watching as she scoffed and pulled away.
"I'm not who you think I am... I'm not what anybody thinks I am... If you all knew what I really am, you’d all leave me," she said, her voice laced with despair.
“Listen, no matter what you are, we’ll always be here for you—me, your siblings, all of us,” he replied, his voice steady.
“You’re not a murderer, so why would you think no one would want you?” he added, trying to bring light to the dark cloud hanging over her.
“I’m a murderer,” she said, her voice quivering with conviction.
“Okay, that’s enough kidding,” Shane chuckled, trying to lighten the mood.
“I’m not kidding! One night out with my friends, I was drunk, and I hooked up with a guy. Months later, I found out I was pregnant... I hid it from my family and took abortion pills. I terminated the pregnancy... I killed my baby.” As the words tumbled from her lips, her composure shattered, and she broke into tears.
Shane heaved a deep sigh, overwhelmed by the weight of her confession. All he could do was hold her tightly as her sobs echoed within him, a painful symphony of sorrow and regret. How lonely she must have felt, he thought, bearing such a heavy burden in silence.
“Denise,” he whispered softly, brushing his hand through her hair in an attempt to comfort her. “You didn’t kill your baby; you made a decision based on where you were at that moment. It doesn't define you or who you are. We all make mistakes, and you’re still so young. You’re not alone in this.”
Denise pulled away slightly to look into his eyes, her gaze filled with vulnerability. “But it feels like I am alone. No one understands how heavy this is. Every day I wake up, and that pain is just… there. It’s suffocating.”
Shane gently wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumb, a comforting presence in the storm of her emotions. “You need to talk about it, Denise. You’re allowing it to consume you, when it should be a part of your story, not the whole narrative. It’s okay to grieve, but remember, this pain doesn’t define you. You’re not a bad person.”
Denise shook her head, frustration evident in the crease of her brow. “You don’t get it. You don’t know what it’s like to feel responsible for ending a life.”
“I may not know exactly, but I can only imagine how deeply painful that must be,” Shane replied, his voice steady yet warm. “Just remember, it’s okay not to be okay. You have every right to feel the way you do, but it’s important to heal. Don’t let it overshadow the beautiful person you are.”
The weight of her emotions felt unbearable. “I don’t know how to heal,” she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. “Talking feels impossible. What if no one forgives me for what I did?”
“Forgiveness starts within yourself first,” he said gently, his eyes steady and full of understanding. “It’s time to stop punishing yourself. The past cannot be changed, but you can choose how you move forward from it. I’ll be here to help you through the darkness, and I promise you won’t be alone in this.”
Taking a shaky breath, Denise felt a flicker of hope. "I’ll try," she whispered, her voice trembling. “Thank you.”
“Always,” Shane smiled softly as he pulled her into his embrace again, wrapping her in warmth and safety. In that moment, Denise felt a glimmer of light in her heart, realizing she didn’t have to bear this burden alone. It was the first step on a long journey, but at least now, she had someone walking beside her.
