Chapter 91: Den Of Wolves And Vipers.
Dua returned to the bedroom, and Steven welcomed her with open arms, his expression revealing both concern and warmth. "How did it go? What happened?" he asked, his brow furrowed with worry.
"They want me to attend the Mafia meeting tonight with you..." Dua started, her voice tinged with uncertainty.
"No, you won't," Steven interrupted, a definite finality in his tone. Dua couldn’t help but chuckle softly; he hadn't even heard the entire story yet. What if he knew the whole plan?
"And I'm supposed to make you agree to whatever he's going to request at the meeting," she added, determined to complete her thought.
"What will he request?" Steven questioned, his gaze sharpening.
"I have no idea," Dua replied honestly.
Steven scoffed, a hint of humor breaking through his frustration. "Very sly of him."
"So, what time do we leave for the meeting?" she asked, an innocent smile gracing her lips.
"You mean, what time do I leave for the meeting. You're going nowhere," he countered, a protective edge in his voice.
"But—" she began to protest.
"No buts," he insisted. "My job is to protect you and our children. I'm not letting you risk your life for me again."
"I'm not risking my life; I'm just trying to help," Dua reasoned, desperate to make him see her side.
"You've done enough helping. I can handle this," he replied, and she sighed, feeling the weight of his protectiveness.
"Okay, fine! We’ll do it your way!" She threw her hands up in mock surrender, though secretly, she had a plan of her own.
Time flew by, and night quickly descended. Steven adjusted his shirt as he awaited Shane in the living room for their departure. He heard hurried footsteps and turned to see Dua, instantly captivated by her appearance. She radiated elegance in a simple, flowing black dress that accentuated her baby bump. Her hair was elegantly pinned with her hairpin, with a few strands framing her face, while her dark makeup exuded a mystique that made her look every bit the wife of a Mafia King. "Beautiful," Steven blurted out, momentarily lost in her allure.
"I know, right?" Dua smiled, shaking him from his daze.
"Where do you think you're going?" he asked, his expression a mix of concern and frustration.
"Wherever you're going," Dua shrugged, trying to downplay her excitement for the night ahead.
"No, you won't, darling. Let’s not have this discussion again." Steven's voice was almost pleading.
"If she wants to go with you, then let her," Shane chimed in, stepping out from the shadow of the staircase. His playful grin earned a proud look from Dua.
“What are you all doing out this late?” Denise’s voice echoed from the stairs as she descended.
“Um... we’re just heading out for a quick bite?” Dua and Shane exchanged a skeptical glance, struggling for an excuse.
“No, we’re going for a Mafia meeting,” Steven blurted out, watching Dua’s and Shane’s shock morph into wide-eyed surprise.
“Mafia meeting? Is that safe for my sister, especially in her condition?” Denise’s concern was palpable, her brow furrowing in worry.
"But there's no problem since you'll be with her. Just make sure you guys come back early." Denise finally convinced herself, leaving Steven in a state of disbelief. He told Denise the truth of where they were going so she would convince Dua to stay at home, but to his surprise she didn't.
"Let's go," Shane said.
Dua and Steven made their way out of the house, but before Shane left, he gave Denise a wink and she replied with a knowing smile.
Arriving at the venue—a dimly lit beer parlor owned by one of the gang members—Dua felt the anticipation mix with unease. As Steven held her hand, his grip provided comfort, a silent promise of protection. “Tell me when you need a break,” he whispered.
With a determined smile, Dua replied, “I’m tougher than you think. Besides, it’s just a meeting.”
“This isn’t just any meeting; it’s the Mafia meeting. A den of wolves and vipers, ruled by the Devil himself. It’s no place for ordinary people,” he countered.
“Then you’re not the Devil,” she defended, poking fun at the weight of his title.
“Whether you believe it or not, as long as I’m the Mafia King, there’s a devilish side to me,” he said, his demeanor radiating authority. “Let’s go in.”
As they stepped into the dimly lit beer parlor, the air was thick with an ancient ambiance, shrouded in shadows and the lingering essence of secrets that could rattle even the foundations of the Mafia world. The decor was rich, with dark wood paneling and low-hanging lights casting a warm but eerie glow. In one corner, a group of men with hardened expressions engaged in a tense game of cards, laughter erupting occasionally like distant thunder. Meanwhile, other groups of men and women were deep in conversation, glasses clinking in a chorus that harmonized with the heavy scent of cigarettes and strong perfumes.
Dua felt a wave of unease wash over her as the tension draped over the room. When they all caught sight of Steven, everything came to a standstill. They stood and bowed in reverence, a gesture that sent a shiver down Dua's spine as Steven made his way to the head of the table, where she would sit beside him.
"Looks like my King has graced us with his presence and brought company," one of the men remarked, a hint of sarcasm lacing his tone.
"You all know my wife, so there’s no need for an introduction," Steven replied casually, his demeanor shifting into something far more commanding.
"Greetings, my Queen," they all chorused, sending a thrill of anxiety and honor through Dua.
“Yeah, nice to meet you all,” Dua managed, her heart racing. Steven's transformation was evident; his relaxed facade had morphed into that of a leader, confident and authoritative. Interlacing their fingers, she felt a surge of determination; they had entered the lion’s den together, and she was resolute in standing by his side, no matter the danger that swirled around them.
The night unfurled into an intricate tapestry of tense discussions and heavy negotiations. Steven’s voice, calm yet assertive, wove through the complexities of territory disputes, profits from recent ventures, and strategic alliances that could redefine their future. Dua listened, enraptured by the revelation of Steven's multifaceted identity—not just her husband, but a pivotal player commanding respect and attention in a world rife with peril.
As the hours slipped by, the atmosphere thickened with intensity, drawing Dua’s thoughts sharply back to the present when Bob rose from his seat, locking his eyes onto her with an unyielding gaze before shifting to Steven. “My King, when will you assume the position of Mafia Lord? I suggest we act without delay—I say you do it this week.”
Dua’s heart raced; this was the moment she'd been dreading: playing the unwelcome role thrust upon her. She glanced at Steven, giving him a knowing look.
Steven cursed under his breath, his fists clenched tightly as he nodded in reluctant agreement. Across the table, Bob’s grin spread, a thin veil attempting to mask his glee from the others.
“And since you’ll be the Mafia Lord, you’ll be wrapped up in global affairs,” Bob continued, leaning forward with a predatory gleam in his eyes. “You’ll need someone to oversee our little gang when your attention is drawn away. I suggest you choose your second-in-command.”
“And who would that be?” Steven replied, his voice tinged with skepticism.
“I would be honored to fill that position, my King,” Bob declared, his smile broadening.
“And why should it be you?” Victoria shot back, rising from her seat, eyes blazing with defiance.
“You’re a woman, how dare you oppose the men?” Bob’s tone dripped with condescension.
With a scoff, Victoria reached for her gun, aiming it squarely at Bob's heart. “I dare you to speak again,” she threatened, her voice as frigid as ice.
Dua felt a chuckle rising within her at Victoria’s fiery defense. "She’s just as quick-tempered as Knucklehead; no wonder they’re best friends," she mused, watching the tension unfold.
“Sit down, Vi,” Steven commanded firmly, and after a reluctant moment, Victoria lowered her weapon, her pride wounded but respect for Steven reigning in her anger.
“What say you, my King?” Bob pressed eagerly, his eyes glacial as he turned back to Steven. Dua again met Steven's gaze, her heart in her throat.
“Very well. As you wish,” Steven replied. Victoria’s eyes widened in disbelief while Bob’s smirk returned, triumphant.
“Lastly, my King, as you ascend to this new level of leadership as the Mafia Lord, I recommend you have an adviser—your second-in-command is the best fit for the role.” Bob said.
“No!” Steven replied sternly, catching Bob off guard. “I can make decisions well on my own,” he added, his tone leaving no room for discussion.
“But...” Bob started, glancing nervously at Dua, who met his gaze with a worried expression. She looked back at Steven, hoping to see some sign of compromise, but he seemed resolute.
Ignoring Dua's unspoken plea, Steven pressed on, his voice steady. “If I’m going to have an adviser, I choose Shane.” The declaration hung in the air, and Bob's face twisted in a mix of displeasure and barely suppressed fury, his fists clenching at his sides.
Victoria, watching the tension rise, shot Bob a triumphant smirk that he met with a dark glare, the animosity between them palpable.
Finally, Steven turned his attention to Dua, his eyes softening as their gazes locked. In that intimate moment, he conveyed reassurance without words, giving her hand a gentle squeeze that spoke volumes. It was a silent promise of support amidst the chaos, a reminder that they'd face whatever came next together.
