Beneath the Stone and Silence
Beneath the Stone and Silence
Cold. It seeped through her clothes, clinging to her skin like an unrelenting weight. Damp stone pressed against her back, unforgiving, rough beneath her stiff limbs. She shivered, not from the cold alone but from something deeper—the disquiet of waking somewhere unfamiliar, somewhere wrong.
Darkness swallowed the space around her. There wasn’t much light, only a faint glimmer filtering in from somewhere unseen. It did nothing to cut through the suffocating blackness.
Tessa shifted, sluggish, her body aching from lying too long on the hard ground. Her limbs felt heavy, her mind slow—groggy, as if she had been drugged. Then, as she moved her wrists, she felt it.
Rope.
Bound tightly, her skin raw beneath the restraints. Panic rose, fast and sharp, crashing into her before reason could take hold.
Where was she? What had happened?
Her breaths came uneven, shallow, each inhale dragging against the cold air as she struggled to make sense of her surroundings. She strained to see beyond the shadows, searching for anything familiar—walls, doors, the outline of furniture.
Nothing.
Only emptiness, stone, and silence.
Time passed in slow, agonizing stretches. Minutes, hours—she had no way of knowing. The dungeon remained quiet, save for the distant drip of water somewhere unseen. A draft moved through the space, carrying the scent of earth, decay, and something metallic.
Then, footsteps.
Measured. Purposeful.
She stiffened as the sound approached, the weight of impending confrontation pressing down on her. Someone entered. A figure—a man. He didn’t speak, didn’t acknowledge her presence beyond the quiet action of untying her wrists. He placed food before her, a simple meal, before turning away and disappearing back into the shadows.
She didn’t eat.
Her stomach twisted at the thought. Poison? Something else? She wasn’t willing to risk it.
The dungeon was still again, leaving her alone with her thoughts. Would Ash realize she was missing? Would anyone know where to look? Her phone—her belongings—were gone. She was alone. Completely and utterly alone.
Hours blurred together. People came and went, but none of them spoke. She was granted bathroom breaks, always within the confines of the dungeon, always monitored. The silence weighed heavier as the days dragged on, turning into something suffocating.
She asked for the time, the date. No response.
Then, one day—footsteps, deliberate and unhurried. Keys jingling.
Tessa looked up, and the sight before her sent ice crawling through her veins.
Tall. Menacing. Power radiating from every inch of him.
His eyes were like voids—cold, emotionless, soulless. The way he carried himself, the slight tilt of his head, the air of absolute control—it left no doubt.
Maximus.
She knew without asking.
A slow, cruel smile stretched across his lips as his gaze flickered to the untouched food.
"Do you think it’s poisoned?" he mused, his tone laced with mock amusement.
She didn’t answer.
Every instinct told her to stay silent, to say nothing that might give away what he didn’t already know. In the back of her mind, the thought clawed at her—did Maximus know about Ash and Amara? Would speaking their names be a death sentence?
He gave nothing away. Just the cold smirk, just the promise in his words—soon enough, she would know everything.
Then he was gone.
Time slipped by in cruel stretches, marked only by the occasional arrival of food and the quiet shuffle of unseen footsteps. No answers. No conversation. She grew restless, her mind unraveling against the solitude.
She refused to eat, her body growing weaker, her thoughts drifting into fragmented memories. Cassie. Her life before Falls Hollow. The things she would never get back.
Would she die here?
Would Ash ever know what had happened?
The last thing he would remember of her—their fight.
Sleep came in restless fragments, a battle between exhaustion and the fear of closing her eyes for too long. Every sound sent her on edge. Every shadow felt like it was shifting, watching, waiting.
Then—something different.
A touch. Soft. Urgent.
Fingers brushed her arm, shaking her gently.
A whisper—her name.
Tessa stirred, barely breathing, unsure if it was real or the tricks of her mind.
"Ash?" she murmured, her voice barely a breath.
"No," the whisper came again—frantic, desperate. "Tessa, wake up!"
Her eyes fluttered open, and for the first time in days, she saw something beyond the darkness—Amara.
She knelt outside the bars of her cell, darting quick glances behind her, pulling a small bundle from her bag—a stolen offering of food. An apple, bread, cheese.
"Eat," Amara urged. "I’m getting you out of here."
Tessa’s throat tightened. Words felt impossible.
"How long?" she managed to ask.
"Five days."
Five days.
The weight of it crashed over her, but there was no time to dwell.
Amara couldn’t stay. A door opened in the distance, and in an instant, she melted back into the shadows.
Then—gone.
Tessa clutched the food, swallowing the wave of emotions rising in her chest.
She wasn’t alone anymore.
Hope, no matter how small, had found its way into the darkness.
