Chapter 62 CHAPTER 62: Choices

Chapter 62 CHAPTER 62: Choices
Hazel

In the quiet stillness of Ethan’s nursery, where the soft glow of the moon filtered through the sheer curtains, I found myself trapped in a reverie of thoughts. It was 3:30 AM, an hour when the world felt hushed, yet my mind buzzed with the sort of anxious energy that had become all too familiar lately. Ethan, my little warrior, lay cradled against my chest, his tiny body rising and falling with each peaceful breath. He had fought bravely from the moment of his premature birth, and now, cocooned in the warmth of my embrace, he seemed a universe away from those fragile first days.

As I gently rocked him, my mind drifted to the looming deadline that Adam had set, now merely days away. It had been two months since the DNA test results had irrevocably linked him to us, yet he had distanced himself, communicating only through his lawyer. The heartbreak of how everything had unfolded lingered like a shadow, a dark counterpart to the love and light Ethan brought into my life. Adam’s engagement to Sophia Easton, announced so conspicuously in the papers, was another twist of the knife.

On the other side of my heart lay William, steadfast and unwavering. Despite the revelations and the storm of emotions that had followed, his commitment to Ethan, and subtly to me, remained unshaken. He had promised a life for Ethan filled with love and warmth, a promise I saw him fulfill every day without fail.

Gazing down at Ethan, whose little finger curled around my thumb, a surge of fierce love welled up inside me. “I love you, Ethan, no matter what,” I whispered, my voice a soft lullaby in the dim room. “I will make sure your life is soft and beautiful.” He blinked up at me with those warm brown eyes, so like mine yet hinting at features of the father he hadn’t met. In his gaze, I saw unconditional trust, a balm to my frayed nerves. He doesn’t need DNA to be loved, I thought resolutely. Love was more than genetics; it was this—endless nights, whispered promises, the gentle touch that soothes a nightmare away.

Lost in these thoughts, I hadn’t noticed William’s approach until his warm hands settled on my shoulders. I was startled, a reflex from too many sleepless nights, then relaxed under his familiar touch.

“Hey, I didn’t mean to startle you,” he murmured, his voice a comforting baritone that seemed to smooth out some of the edges inside me.

“It’s alright,” I replied, managing a weary smile. As he extended a hand to gently touch Ethan, who stirred briefly before settling back into sleep, I felt a pang of longing for the days when our relationship hadn’t been so strained, shadowed by the complexities that Adam’s return had brought into our lives.

When the DNA results came in, and with Adam’s underhanded move to clear my family’s debts, William was furious. The space between us had grown, filled with his silent contemplation and my aching heart. We were like two satellites orbiting the same world, close yet not touching. I missed him, missed us, and the intimacy that had once seemed as easy as breathing.

“Let me hold him so you can catch some sleep,” William offered, his voice pulling me back from the brink of my reverie.

“He’s already asleep. I’ll just wait for ten more minutes, then I’ll get some rest, okay?” I reassured him, not ready to let go of Ethan or the moment.

William nodded, a silent acknowledgment, before he strode out of the room, his figure a pillar of strength yet so distant. I sighed, a sound more felt than heard, and looked down at Ethan, my resolve hardening. The day ahead would indeed not be easy, but like every challenge we had faced so far, I was determined to see it through for Ethan, for William, and perhaps even for myself. As the moon continued its silent arc across the sky, I rocked my son, each movement a promise, each breath a commitment to the future.

Adam arrived at the house at midday. We agreed to meet at home so he could get a chance to meet Ethan. No matter what had happened between us, he was still a part of my life, had been for a long time.

I was at the nursery feeding Ethan when Maria came in to inform me that Adam had arrived. My heart drummed in my chest frantically. I was nervous seeing him and at the same time I couldn't wait to get it over with.

“Mom, Adam is here” I told her.

“Already”? She asked.

“Yes, could you please hold Ethan while I'm out? He was a little fussy today.

“Okay” she said, and I handed the baby to her.

I quickly went upstairs to change into something more suitable. As I left my room, I encountered William on his way down. I flashed him a brief smile, and we descended the stairs together. Upon reaching the living room, Adam, sensing our arrival, turned and stood, locking his gaze with mine from across the room, his expression unreadable. William drew closer and took my hands in his. Seeing our intertwined hands, Adam clenched his jaw and began walking toward us, each step cautiously, as if walking through a minefield. William's grip on my hand tightened.

“Hi Adam,” I said.

“Can I please see the baby? It was part of my request”, he said, without any form of emotion. I felt an ache in my chest but nodded and led the way to the nursery.

As we got in, Ethan was inside his crib. My mother had already dressed him up and got him ready, since she was privy to his visit. When we got in, she murmured greetings and exited the room.

Adam then took hesitant steps to the crib where Ethan lay. I watched him as he looked down at the baby.

He gulped, then turned to me. “I want to hold him,” he said. I nodded and got close and picked up Ethan and handed to him. His hands trembled as he reached out to take him. He cradled him like the most fragile treasure the earth could hold. His tiny head fitted perfectly in the crook of his elbow, his miniature fingers curling instinctively around him as he kicked his little feet and cooed.

I watched as Adam’s face softened, the corners of his eyes crinkling with a sad smile. His eyes, bright with unshed tears, were wide with wonder, drinking in every detail of her face as if trying to memorize it. His arms, protective and secure despite their unsteady quivering, adjusted Ethan slightly against his chest.

“He is handsome,” he said, turning to me, his eyes glistening with unshed tears.

“Yes, he is,” I said in a small voice, my eyes stinging with tears. He then bent down and dropped him into his crib while Ethan held onto his fingers with his tiny fist. Adam kissed his hand and dropped it. Then he turned to me with a fierce determination in his eyes.

“I want to be in his life” he said, walking towards me, his gaze only on me as if no one else was in the room. The words pierced through me as memories of our past, laughter echoing through forgotten conversations, flickered through my mind.

“I’ll take care of his upbringing, you don't have to drop a dime. I'm ready to be everything to him”, Adam continued, his eyes searching mine.

‘Adam, that's my son too. Being a father isn't just about biology. I will provide for my child. Just because you paid for Hazel’s debts which nobody asked you to pay does not give you any rights”, he said.

“No, just because Hazel chose you does not make Ethan your son”. He fired back, then looked at me. “Look, All I’m asking is for a chance to be in Ethan's life. He is my child”.

I glanced at both of them fuming with anger. The room felt suffocating, the walls closing in as the gravity of the moment settled upon me. This was more than a choice between two men, it was a choice between the past I knew and the future I could carve out for myself and my son.

“Adam, you being the biological father of my baby does not give you the right to detect how his life will be run or by whom,” I said, my voice steady despite the turmoil inside as Adam flinched.

He moved close to me and held my hand in his. “Hazel, it isn't too late, we can make this work. I love you Hazel, I have never stopped. You don't have anything tying you to William anymore”, he continued to plead as I felt the tears run down my cheeks.

Then William’s voice boomed “Adam, get away from my wife”. Then he advanced towards us. "How dare you come into my house and make advances at my wife right in front of me”? He fumed. I jerked away from Adam and held onto William, trying to calm him down.

“Well, her debts have been paid so she is free to choose. I have the right to tell her what I want”, Adam added.

He looked down at me before he spoke again, his tone firm yet gentle. “And what about what Hazel wants, Adam? This isn’t just about you or your rights. Hazel and Ethan are not just pieces to be moved around your chessboard. What about your fiancé? What are you going to do with her? Abandon her? Huh?” he asked.

Then Adam spoke, ignoring William’s questions. “Hazel, the ball is in your court now. You will have to choose between us”, he gritted his teeth and looked straight in my eyes.

“Hazel, you don't have to choose anything, '' William countered.  I gulped as the room fell silent.

“I need to think,” I murmured, feeling the weight of their stares. “I need some air.” I rose, my legs trembling slightly as I stepped out of the room, the cool hallway offering a slight reprieve from the intensity inside. I held the wall, inhaling sharply. The consequences of my past irrational decisions slamming into me with force. After a few minutes, I went back inside to see William leaning on the doorway while Adam was seated in my breastfeeding chair, his head in his hands.

I cleared my throat and began “It is true that the contract is no longer binding to me and I know I can choose to leave or stay, but that decision is left for me and what is good for my baby.

I turned to Adam. “Adam, you said you wanted to be in Ethan’s life. You will, nobody is going to take that away from you and I will make sure he knows who you are and as he grows up he’ll know you love him, but you are not going to force me to choose”, I said firmly.

With bated breath, I looked from William to Adam. But instead, their gazes were locked in a silent battle, the tension between them palpable.

"Enough of this squabble," I whispered, my voice barely a whisper. "I'm sorry I brought all this to us, but we need to put aside our differences and focus on what's best for the baby." they both nodded.

With a newfound sense of determination, I looked up at William and Adam, a sense of resolve settling over me. "We may not have all the answers," I said, my voice steady, "but together, we'll figure it out and whatever happens, whatever decisions we make, they'll be about what’s best for Ethan... and for us."
