Chapter 191
Chapter 191
Stone rained around him as Damien forced his way through the cracked wall, his body nothing but violence and terror made flesh.
He didn’t feel the cuts opening along his arms. Didn’t register the way his shoulders tore as he shoved through a space shaped for smaller beings. Didn’t care that the heat burned through his clothes and scorched his skin.
He felt only one thing.
Siena.
The moment he saw her, everything inside him broke.
She was on her knees in the center of a chamber that radiated heat and ancient power. Light still clung to her skin—white-gold, pulsing, alive. Her eyes were blown wide, her lips parted in a soundless cry, her body trembling like she was being remade bone by bone.
And standing beside her—no, coiled around her—was something Damien had no name for.
A shape made of runes and shadow.
A presence that made his wolf recoil while his rage lunged forward.
The thing didn’t touch her.
But the heat around her, the magnetic press of the air, the way she arched under it—it may as well have been hands on her skin.
Hands that weren’t his.
Damien saw red.
“Siena.” His voice cracked as he reached for her. “Come here.”
But she didn’t move.
Her fingers dug into the stone like she was anchoring herself to survive whatever power was tearing through her veins. Her breath shook. Her body shook. Light trembled beneath her skin like it wanted out.
She looked at him through wet lashes, dazed, undone, glowing.
“Damien…” Her voice was barely a whisper.
His heart nearly failed. “I’m here. I’ve got you, little one—just come here.”
But the shadow beside her moved.
Slow. Deliberate.
Like a god stepping into light.
The chamber darkened around its shape. The runes crawled across its form in molten lines. Heat radiated off it in waves strong enough to blister skin.
Damien’s snarl ripped out of him, raw, feral, uncontained. “Get away from her.”
The entity didn’t step back.
Instead, it angled its head toward Damien, studying him like one might study an ant charging a bonfire.
She is not ready for you, it said, the words vibrating through the stone rather than forming from any mouth.
If you touch her now, she will break.
Damien’s vision tunneled.
His voice was a low, deadly rasp. “If you don’t move, I’ll break you.”
Siena winced, a sound caught between a gasp and a whimper.
Damien’s focus snapped to her instantly. “Siena. Look at me.”
She lifted her head. Tears clung to her lashes. Magic shimmered across her collarbone. Her lips were flushed from the heat pushing against her skin.
“Damien,” she whispered, voice thick. “It—he—won’t let me move.”
His knees nearly buckled.
Not from fear.
From the catastrophic, bone-deep realization that she was caught between two powers—his and something older, hungrier, claiming her in ways he couldn’t yet understand.
And she was fighting both.
Damien stepped forward.
The chamber shook.
The shadow’s heat flared, meeting Damien’s rising fury like two storms colliding.
Behind him, the stone doorway collapsed completely, sealing them inside.
Not that he cared.
He only saw her.
Her hair plastered to her cheeks. Her shaking hands. Her chest rising too fast. Magic bleeding from her skin like starlight forced into human form.
“What did he do to you?” His voice shook with the effort to remain gentle. “What did that bastard Rath throw you into?”
Her breath broke. “I don’t know—I don’t—Damien, I can feel everything. My veins feel like they’re—”
She cried out suddenly, arching, the light in her spine flaring white-hot.
Damien lunged—
—but the shadow struck first.
Heat slammed into Damien’s chest like a physical blow, shoving him back several steps. Runes on the floor blazed bright beneath his boots as if warning him he had entered something forbidden.
Do not touch her yet.
She will shatter.
Damien bared his teeth. “Touch her? I’m taking her out of here.”
You cannot.
“She’s mine.”
The chamber vibrated.
The entity’s voice dropped lower, darker, threaded with an ancient amusement.
She is not yours.
Not truly.
Not anymore.
Every muscle in Damien’s body went still.
His heartbeat went silent.
Siena’s head snapped toward the shadow, panic flaring across her face. “Stop—don’t—”
The figure leaned closer to her, its heat curling around her throat like a forbidden whisper.
She awakens.
Damien moved so fast the stone beneath him cracked.
“Get. Away. From. Her.”
The power that exploded from him was enough to rattle the universe—black flame, red wrath, the kind of dark magic that made the world flinch.
The shadow responded in kind.
The heat surged, scorching the air, shaking the chamber, flaring so bright that Siena’s cry was swallowed in the roar of colliding forces.
For one suspended moment—
Damien and the entity stood inches apart.
Magic against magic.
Rage against eternity.
And Siena between them, trembling, glowing, breaking.
Her voice cracked through the chaos. “Damien—please—”
That single word shattered him.
He tore forward again, every instinct screaming to reach her, to take her away, to fix the fear in her voice—
But the moment he crossed the line of runes—
Siena screamed.
The light inside her burst outward, a violent pulse that threw Damien back into the wall. His bones cracked against the stone. His vision blurred.
“Siena!”
Her body arched off the floor, suspended in midair as the power tore through her. She didn’t look human—she looked celestial, burning from the inside out.
Her eyes glowed.
Her spine arched.
Her hair lifted like it was caught in a storm.
The entity moved behind her, shadow flaring, as though bracing her—not touching her, but supporting her through the transformation.
Damien fought to rise, teeth clenched so hard they fractured.
“What are you doing to her?! Stop—STOP!”
He lunged again.
This time he made it two steps before the runes flared gold-red and exploded upward into a wall of heat that physically separated him from Siena.
The barrier rippled like molten glass.
On the other side—
Siena hung suspended, gasping, writhing, her hands clawing at the air as if reaching for him even though she couldn’t break free of the magic overtaking her.
Her voice broke on a sob. “Damien—help—”
He slammed his fists against the barrier.
It didn’t budge.
Rage and terror ripped out of him in a roar that shook the chamber.
The entity’s voice thundered:
If he touches you now, you will die.
Damien’s voice cracked. “Let me in!”
You will kill her.
“She needs me—”
She needs power.
Damien’s chest heaved.
He could see every tremor racking her body. Every tear slipping down her cheeks. Every desperate reach of her fingers toward him.
He had never been so close to breaking.
Siena’s breath hitched.
Her gaze met his—wild, terrified, pleading.
“Damien… don’t leave me.”
Something inside him shattered.
“I’m not going anywhere.” His voice broke. “I’m right here. Siena, I’m right here.”
The shadow turned its attention back to her.
A whisper, almost gentle.
Choose, it breathed into her skin.
Awaken… or fall.
The chamber plunged into silence.
Siena’s breath hitched in her throat—
—and the light inside her detonated.
Damien screamed her name—
As the barrier shattered like glass—
As the chamber ruptured with power—
As Siena’s body went limp—
And the world went black.
