Breaking Glass

Breaking Glass
The sound of shattering glass still rang in Elena’s ears as the figure landed inside the penthouse. Shards glittered across the polished floor like lethal jewels, reflecting the storm’s flashes from outside.

The intruder moved with unnerving precision black-clad, masked, weapon raised, a predator who had chosen his prey. And his prey was her.

Elena froze, breath caught in her chest. The gun’s barrel looked impossibly large, its dark mouth promising death.

Adrian reacted first. In one swift motion, he shoved Elena behind him, drawing his weapon with terrifying speed. The two men locked sights on each other one cloaked in shadows, the other in fury.

“You’ll regret stepping into my home,” Adrian growled.

The intruder tilted his head, unbothered, as if Adrian’s warning were nothing more than background noise. His voice, distorted by a modulator, slithered through the air.

“She’s not yours to protect, Drake. She’s leverage. And leverage doesn’t last long.”

Elena’s heart hammered. She wanted to scream, to run, but her legs wouldn’t obey. Every instinct screamed at her that this wasn’t a threat—they had come to take her.

Adrian fired. The crack of the gunshot split the room, deafening and final. But the intruder was fast—he twisted aside, the bullet grazing his shoulder instead of striking true.

The masked man fired back. The shot struck the wall inches from Elena’s head, sending a spray of plaster and glass raining down on her. She ducked, her scream muffled by Adrian’s body as he shielded her again.

“Go!” Adrian barked to his guards. “Take her out of here!”

Two guards moved toward Elena, but the intruder fired twice more. Both men dropped instantly, their bodies collapsing with sickening thuds.

Elena gasped, horror clawing at her throat. They hadn’t even had a chance.

Adrian’s fury deepened. He lunged, tackling the intruder to the ground. The two men struggled, fists and weapons clashing, their grunts filling the air. The storm outside raged louder, thunder rolling like a battle drum.

“Elena, move!” Adrian roared.

But she couldn’t leave him not when the intruder’s knee slammed into Adrian’s ribs, not when his blade flashed in the dim light.

With shaking hands, Elena grabbed the nearest object she could a heavy glass decanter from the side table. She raised it high and smashed it across the intruder’s head.

The man staggered, just long enough for Adrian to seize control. He slammed the intruder against the wall, wrenching the weapon from his grip. The mask cracked slightly, revealing pale skin beneath, but the man shoved Adrian away with brutal force before the guards could intervene.

He backed toward the shattered window, blood dripping from his temple, his breathing ragged yet steady. His eyes visible now through the broken mask locked on Elena’s. Cold. Calculating.

“This isn’t over,” he rasped. “She’ll come with us. One way or another.”

Then, with a final glance at Adrian, he leapt backward out of the window.

Elena screamed, rushing to the glass edge. She expected to see a broken body below. But there was nothing. The night swallowed him whole, the storm concealing his escape.

Adrian grabbed her arm, pulling her away. “Don’t. He’s gone.”

Her body trembled uncontrollably. “He wanted me. He was here for me.”

Adrian cupped her face, forcing her to meet his eyes. “And he didn’t take you. Because I won’t let them.”

Tears blurred her vision. “But my sister Adrian, they have Sofia. If they can break into your penthouse, if they can kill your guards like they’re nothing, what chance does she have?”

His gaze darkened, the muscle in his jaw twitching. “Then we’ll take the fight to them.”

Elena shook her head. “You keep saying that, but you don’t tell me how. You don’t tell me anything! If you want me to trust you, if you want me to stand with you, then stop hiding the truth.”

Adrian hesitated, his silence louder than thunder.

Her voice cracked, torn between desperation and rage. “They said you were one of them. That you broke away. Tell me, Adrian. Was it true?”

His eyes shuttered. “Yes.”

The word hit her like a physical blow.

She stumbled back, pressing a hand against her mouth. “You… you were part of them. The same people who now want me dead. Who have my sister.”

His voice was rough. “I was. And leaving them is the reason they want to destroy me. But Elena listen to me they will never stop until one of us is gone. That’s why I didn’t want you dragged into this.”

Her chest heaved. She wanted to run from him, to flee this world of blood and secrets. But where could she go? They had already marked her.

Tears slid down her cheeks as she whispered, “What did you do for them, Adrian? What did you become?”

His gaze flickered, haunted by memories she couldn’t fathom. But before he could answer, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket.

He pulled it out, his expression darkening further as he glanced at the screen. He answered, voice sharp. “What?”

Elena could only hear one side of the call. Adrian’s face hardened with every word, his hand clenching the phone so tightly it looked as if it might snap.

Finally, he ended the call, his gaze snapping to Elena. “They’ve sent proof.”

Her blood ran cold. “Proof?”

Adrian handed her the phone. On the screen was a photo grainy, but unmistakable.

Sofia. Bound to a chair. Her face streaked with tears, her eyes wide with terror. Behind her, a masked figure held a knife to her throat.

Elena’s scream tore through the room. Her legs buckled, and Adrian caught her before she hit the floor.

“They’ll kill her,” she sobbed. “They’ll kill her just to get to you.”

Adrian held her close, his arms unyielding. “No. Not if I stop them first.”

She pushed back, her voice raw. “You can’t do this alone. Tell me everything, Adrian. Every secret, every sin. If I’m going to fight for my sister, I need the truth.”

His gaze searched hers, torn between fear of losing her and the reality that he already was.

“Elena,” he whispered, his voice breaking. “The things I’ve done… they’ll destroy how you see me.”

“Then let them,” she said fiercely. “Because what will destroy me is losing her.”

Adrian closed his eyes, inhaling sharply as though bracing himself. When he opened them, his resolve was steel.

“Then you’ll have the truth.”

He leaned closer, his voice low, intimate, trembling with the weight of confession. “Elena, before I was Adrian Drake, billionaire… I was their enforcer. Their weapon. And the first life I ever took.”

The door burst open. Another guard, pale and breathless, shouted:

“Sir! They’ve moved her. Sofia’s no longer where we tracked her. She’s gone.”

Elena’s scream filled the room.
