Chapter 25 chapter 25
The Boundary

They moved out at nightfall.

Rael led. Elias and Nyx fell in behind him without discussion. It was clear from the way he moved that he knew this route and had walked it before and didn't need input on it. Soren peeled off two blocks from the safe house without ceremony.

"I'll be on the feed." He said to Nyx. "Solenne's grid is still active, four operatives confirmed in the southern district, moving north. I'll tell you if that changes."

"If we're inside, we won't be able to respond," Nyx said.

"I know. I'll tell you anyway."

He walked. Nyx watched him go for half a second, then turned and followed Rael.

Elias followed her.
The old district started three blocks east of the treaty boundary zone, and most people who lived in Caelis walked through it without knowing what it was. It looked like the rest of the city, mostly. The buildings were older, the street layout was less rational, the kind of layout that happened when streets followed footpaths rather than planning. But it read as ordinary to anyone who wasn't paying the kind of attention Elias was paying.

He felt the difference immediately.

The city's background resonance, the divine thinning from the north and the demonic rising from the south that he'd felt on Cassin Street that morning, both of them dropped off here. Not faded. Dropped, the way a signal dropped when something interrupted the frequency. The air in the old district was quieter than the rest of Caelis.

The Void in his blood got louder.
He breathed with it and let it be loud and kept walking.

Nyx's device signaled once. She checked it without slowing.

"Soren. Two of the northern operatives have changed direction." She said it quietly. "Moving east."

"Toward us," Elias said.

"Toward the general area. They don't have a specific position." She pocketed the device. "We have time."

Rael didn't react to any of this. He kept moving because he had learned this route before the city around it existed in its current form.

Two blocks from where Rael eventually stopped, Nyx's stride changed.

It was small. A fraction of a second's hesitation in the left foot, recovered immediately, smoothed over with the discipline of someone who didn't want it noticed. Elias noticed. He didn't say anything. He watched her correct it and file the correction and keep moving, and he understood that she knew he'd seen it and had decided not to address it, and he respected that decision.

The Void was very loud now, not sound, never sound, but presence, the way a large thing in a dark room was present before you could see it. It filled his chest and moved in his palms, and he kept his hands loose at his sides and let it do what it was doing.

Rael stopped.

They were on a street that looked like every other street in the old district. There was slightly uneven paving with buildings on both sides, old stone, and dark windows. Nothing visible marked it as different from the block behind them.

"One rule," Rael said. He turned and looked at both of them. "Inside the territory, it'll know your history. Everything you've experienced, everything you remember, everything you carry. It builds from that." He looked at Elias specifically. "Whatever it shows you, whatever it says to you, don't engage with it. The only person worth engaging with in there is your mother. Everything else is the territory using what it found."

"How do we know the difference?" Nyx said.

"You'll know," Rael said. "She'll be the only thing in there that doesn't want something from you."

He turned back to the street.

"Stay close. Move when I move."

He walked forward and stepped through what looked like empty air and was not.

The boundary was not visible.

It was a pressure change, a shift in the quality of the air that registered in the body before it registered anywhere else. Elias felt it from four feet away, a thickness, and it sent a collective shiver down his spine.

Nyx went second.

He watched.

It lasted two seconds. She stepped into the pressure, and the pressure responded, and what it did to her was brief and not gentle. She went rigid for one full second, her hands clenched at her sides, her jaw tight. Her violet eyes flickered, the color draining at the edges, going grey. Then she was through and moving, not pausing, not acknowledging it, just forward.

He stepped up to it.

The Void rose to meet the boundary the way it had risen in the alley, the way it had responded to the disc, with the certainty of something that knew exactly what it was walking into. He felt it expand through him, filling his chest, moving into his hands, and then he stepped forward.

The boundary stopped him.
But not the way it had stopped Nyx. That had been an extraction, the boundary taking something from her resonance and letting her through diminished. This was different. This was resistance, and it was deliberate, like it knew him and like it closed the door from the other side like something from there knew who he was and what he carried and had decided he wasn't coming in.

He pushed. The Void pushed with him.

The boundary held.

He pushed harder. The warmth in his blood built to something close to heat, and the black and gold moved across his palms, but the boundary didn't move. On the other side of it, Rael and Nyx were in a place he couldn't reach. Behind him, somewhere in the city, Solenne's operatives were moving east, and the thing on the other side of the boundary was holding it closed against the full weight of the most powerful force in existence.

And it was winning.
