Chapter 75 Seventy-Five
"Let's go." Danica ordered, beginning to move forward, only to be stopped by Mason. "What?" She demanded, meeting his gaze.
"You can't possibly think that I'm going to let you step anywhere near any of that fighting." Mason hissed.
"Why not?" Danica snapped, trying to break free of his grip. "You can't possibly think I'm just going to sit here and wait for who knows what!"
"Yes, that's exactly what I expect you to do." Mason responded seriously. "You are pregnant now; your priority is keeping our child safe."
Mason's words felt like a slap to Danica. Even though she really wanted to be beside him fighting, he was right; she was pregnant now, and her top priority was to protect the life that was growing within her. No matter how she wanted to try to deny his logic, she simply couldn't.
"What am I to do if they breach the dorms?" Danica sighed, conceding to Mason's point. "Should I not fight back then as well?"
"If I have anything to say about it, they will never get the chance." Mason swore.
The sound of fighting outside of the building began to increase, indicating that it was time for action to be taken.
"That's my que." Mason whispered, pulling Danica to him. "Wait for me."
Giving her a quick kiss on the lips, Mason hurried after Chris and Cameron, who had already begun to move.
Danica stood in the middle of the room, staring at the door where Mason and his men had just been. Her heart thudded wildly in her chest as the realization of what was happening hit her.
"Please be safe." Danica prayed, heading to a window to look outside.
People and wolves alike could be seen engaging in battle just beyond the glass, their bodies already bloodied from the fierce fight.
Sucking in a breath, Danica watched with wide eyes as a harpie grabbed hold of a wolf and sent it flying through the air into a brick wall. She could see its body twist at an impossible angle as it connected before falling to the ground, unmoving. Even from her vantage point, Danica could easily tell that it was dead.
Remaining in place, Danica continued to watch as the harpies easily overtook the wolves that were fighting them, snapping them easily or ripping their throats out. The whole scene was gruesome as their red blood splattered the earth. With the way things were going, they were going to lose fast.
Unable to continue watching and to keep her promise to Mason, Danica quickly pulled her hair up into a ponytail atop her head before pulling on a pair of tennis shoes. Taking a calming breath, she squared her shoulders, ready to head into the battle herself.
It didn't take long at all for Danica to make her way into the middle of the fray. Looking around, she tried to see if she could spot Mason amongst the wolves that were fighting, coming up empty in the end.
Needing to focus, she turned her attention to the nearest harpie while grinning.
'Let's see what you can do.' Danica murmured to Lizbeth, who was already chomping at the bit to fight.
'Don't worry, and leave this to me.'
'Gladly.'
Running forward, Danica met the harpie head on nails extended into claws and canines sharp, ready to rip the harpie's throat out. She could feel a blazing fire burning within her that spurred her to fight harder. Twisting the harpies hands that she was fighting, Danica laughed as the woman's wrists snapped.
Shrieking, the harpie flew out of Danica's grip, cursing. Not finished with the creature, Danica jumped, grabbing her by the ankle and pulling, sending the harpie crashing to the earth.
"You aren't going anywhere." Danica laughed as she pounced on the harpie, biting her throat.
Feeling her teeth pierce the skin easily, she yanked, ripping the harpies jugular. Standing, she wiped the blood from her mouth before turning and leaving the now-dying harpie to find her next victim.
'Careful.' Lizbeth warned just as another harpie dove towards Danica.
Dodging, Danica allowed her claws to sink into the harpies calf. Yanking, Danica pulled the harpie towards her while swiping her other hand, easily meeting the harpie's throat and cutting the delicate skin there.
Gasping, the harpie fell to the ground, clutching at her throat, trying to stop the bleeding that had begun.
Smirking, Danica moved forward again, not wasting any time to take out whichever enemy she met along the way. Only one harpie was on her mind, and she was determined to find her.
"Luna!" Chris' voice drifted to her through the chaos.
Turning, Danica met his eyes. His face had three nasty gashes on it from where a harpie had managed to get him.
"Chris, where is Mason?" Danica panted as she made her way to the very confused-looking beta.
"I don't know somewhere amongst all this." Chris responded as his eyes took in Danica's state. "What happened? Are you hurt anywhere?"
Looking down, Danica realized that she was covered in blood and feathers.
"No, I'm okay." Danica assured Chris with a smile.
"Then, if you are, you should leave the rest of this to us and get back to safety." Chris demanded sternly.
Danica opened her mouth to respond just as two harpies swooped down towards them, scratching Danica's shoulder in the process before soaring into the air once more.
Cursing Danica let out a growl as she took in the three not-so-deep wounds. Looking at Chris, Danica gave an apologetic smile before bracing herself for the next attack.
"Luna, get back!" Chris commanded as the harpies dove in again.
"Nope." Danica huffed as she dug her nails into the harpies leg and pulled her down.
With her opponent now on the ground and on the same level as her, Danica pounced forward, pinning her beneath her. Leaning down, she bit into the harpies neck and yanked, ripping her throat. Satisfied that she was dying, she got up and looked at Chris, who was watching her with a look of appreciation.
"Vicious." He murmured, nodding.
"Thank you." Danica beamed. "I'm going to find Mason."
Turning, Danica ran, leaving Chris to continue fighting. Dodging little skirmishes, Danica continued to search for her mate; her heart hammered in her chest the longer it took. Despite herself, she couldn't stop envisioning the wolves that she had watched get killed and picture them as Mason.
With a new determination, she moved frantically, trying to find him.
"Where are you off to, little wolf?"
Stopping in her tracks, Danica slowly turned to look at the harpie queen, who had appeared directly behind her.
"Hello again." Marie cooed, smiling viciously. "I was so sad you managed to escape from me, but look at you coming out of hiding. You've made this much easier."
Not speaking, Danica fixed her gaze with Marie's; this time she wasn't going to be caught off guard, and she wasn't going to allow the harpie to live any longer.
"Let's end this, shall we?"
