Chapter 64 Sixty-Four

Chapter 64 Sixty-Four
"They're disappearing." Danica murmurred.

As Mason and Dr. Williams continued to speculate back and forth, the translucent swirls all over Danica's skin had slowly started to disappear and were now nonexistent.

"What?" Mason asked, turning his attention to Danica. "What did you say?"

"They're gone." Danica repeated holding up an arm to show Mason and Dr. Williams. "They disappeared while you two spent your time bickering."

Seeming to not fully believe Danica, Dr. Williams moved forward, grabbing hold of her arm and examining it. As he did so, his brows furrowed as a look of utter confusion formed on his face. Releasing her arm, the doctor locked his gaze with Danica's.

"Did you feel anything strange when they formed?" He asked now, seeming to be deep in thought.

"Strange?" Danica asked, cocking her head to the side. "What do you mean by odd?"

Danica took a moment to consider; there had been that moment when her skin felt like it was on fire, but she had thought maybe it had to do with the machine.

"Will a CT machine cause my skin to feel like it is burning?" Danica asked Dr. Williams. "Like I was on fire?"

Dr. Williams shook his head and said, "No, that wouldn't happen."

"What does that have to do with anything?" Mason asked, interjecting the conversation. "Can you determine what those markings were based on her answer?"

"No," Dr. Williams admitted, beginning to look frustrated. "Should probably consult with the elders."

A chill ran down Danica's back at the mention of the elders. After everything that had happened with her dying and the sudden appearance of the strange markings, she had almost forgotten what she saw in the woods.

"MASON!" Danica shouted much too loudly, grabbing his arm. "Rebecca...."

"I'm already aware." Mason said gravely, his eyes darkening. "I plan on dealing with her spy when I get back."

"What if there are more?" Danica asked as worry began to overcome her.

"I will find each and every one of them." Mason growled.

"What will you do with them once you do?" Even though Danica felt she knew the answer, she couldn't stop herself from asking.

"There is only one way to deal with traitors."

The room around them seemed to grow a considerable amount colder as Mason's alpha aura sprung to life. The entire time Danica had known Mason, she had never bared witness to it, but now that she was feeling it, she felt a sense of pride at how strong and dangerous her mate truly was.

"Tone it down, alpha." Dr. Williams warned. "None of us here are the enemy."

Seeming to snap out of it, Mason shook his head as the temperature around the room began to increase once more.

"We should head back now, Mason." Danica tried grabbing his hand. "I'm clearly fine."

"Doctor?" Mason asked, fixing his gaze on Dr. Williams. "Is she good to go?"

Dr. Williams nodded. "Yeah, luna is fine to leave. I couldn't find a single thing wrong with her; just be sure to properly clean and redress her neck."

"Got it," Mason said as he helped Danica up off the bed. "Thank you for helping her; I will take care of her from here."

With that, Mason scooped Danica into his arms and quickly exited the room, making his way down the hospital's halls and out into the rain outside.

Even though Mason had managed to reign in his alpha power while they were in the hospital, it was clear that he was still very angry over the betrayal of the harpie elder and her lackies. Although Danica was dying of curiosity about Mason's next plans, she kept quiet as they arrived back home.

"You wait here." Mason commanded, dropping Danica onto the couch and disappearing into the bedroom.

"What are you doing?" Danica asked, getting up despite Mason telling her not to.

Entering the room, Danica found Mason digging through some drawers before pulling out a stack of papers. Turning, he dropped them when he realized Danica was standing in the doorway.

"What are those?" Danica asked, bending down to help Mason lift the sheets he had dropped.

"Correspondences between Monica and Rebecca." Mason explained, frowning. "We managed to tap into her cell phone records and found these; this was what first tipped me off to Rebecca's traitorous actions."

Examining a few of the papers in her hands, Danica could feel her heart begin to pound in her chest.

"This...." Danica's voice shook as she spoke. "This is about me."

Mason nodded gravelly. "It looks like Rebecca wanted you gone at any cost."

Slumping to the ground, Danica continued to read the papers as Mason sat and watched. He didn't speak and didn't ask any questions; instead, he waited for Danica to finish before fixing her gaze on his once more.

"When did you get these?" She asked slowly, bracing herself.

"We've been aware since a little after the deaths of the infected wolves." Mason admitted.

As Danica watched his face, she could see that he truly felt sorry for not informing her. The desperation in his eyes was obvious as he waited for her reaction.

"Anything else you've hidden from me?" She asked now, sighing and dropping the papers she was holding on the floor. "What other secrets do you have?"

"Baby, please...." Mason began reaching out a hand.

"DON'T TOUCH ME!" Danica screamed, stopping Mason in his tracks. "How much have you been hiding from me, huh?"

Feeling her anger beginning to rise, Danica tried taking a few calming breaths. She still clearly remembered the forced change earlier in the day due to her uncontrolled anger, and she didn't want to repeat that this time, especially when there was so much that she wanted to ask Mason.

"Tell me." Danica said, coldly narrowing her gaze.

Looking hesitant, Mason opened his mouth and then closed it. From his reaction, it seemed that he wasn't willing to tell her anything. Feeling her heart constrict, Danica stood up.

"That's fine." She murmured, trying to keep herself together. "If you don't want to tell me, then fine, don't tell me."

"Please, just let..."

Holding up a hand Danica stopped Mason's words. "That's enough, Mason; I need to be alone for a while."

"What?" Mason demanded moving forward and grabbing Danica by her arms. "Where do you plan on going?"

"Let me go." Danica growled, shrugging Mason's hands off her. "It doesn't matter where I'm going; you should just worry about protecting your pack."

As Danica spoke the words 'your pack' not 'our pack', she could see a look of distress cross Mason's gaze before his eyes darkened in desperation.

Not bothering to say another word, Danica turned and left the room, slamming the door. Not sure where she would go, she just began to move, not bothering to look back once.
