Chapter 48 Forty-Eight
Letting out a curse, Mason moved forward, leaving Danica behind as he and his packmates engaged with the group of Abaasy that had begun to attack. Not wanting to stand around and not help, Danica ran towards the closest abaasy she could find as she felt the dark being beginning to stir within her.
'Wanna help?' She asked it as she felt the normal tug of the being taking over.
'Gladly.' The being chuckled, yanking hard and pushing Danica to the side.
Fully in control, the being grabbed an abaasy that was jumping towards it and heaved, throwing it through the air before another abaasy jumped on its back. Snarling, the being yanked the abaasy and dug its teeth into the creature's shoulder. Yanking, it ripped the skin of the abaasy clean off before tackling it to the ground.
Shrieking and slashing its claws, the abaasy tore at Danica's chest, trying to get the being off of it. Oblivious to the pain entirely, the being bit the creature's throat and tugged, ending its life right then and there. Lifting its head backwards, it swallowed the abaasy's blood as the urge to kill grew.
'Look out!' Danica yelled, drawing the being's attention to another abaasy that was trying to sneak up on it.
Even though previously Danica hadn't been able to communicate or even control what was happening when the being took control, it seemed that she could now that she had willingly allowed it to take over.
'I've got this.' The being cooed, grabbing the abaasy by the neck and squeezing as it lifted.
Shrieking, the abaasy tried to claw the hand surrounding its throat away with no luck. Squeezing harder, the being felt a satisfying snap before finally letting go as the now motionless Abaasy fell to the ground.
'Weaklings' The being thought with a chuckle.
Moving forward, it surged past Mason's packmates, making its way to Mason's side. Even though it didn't necessarily approve of the whole pack mentality, it wanted to be beside its mate fighting, at least this time around.
"Danica..." Mason started before meeting the being's eyes.
Smirking, the being winked as it dove into the crowd, taking out the one closest to it. Shrieking, the abaasy went down instantly as two others jumped on the being's back. Grabbing hold of one, it threw the creature into its friends before flipping the other over its shoulder and snapping the creature's neck with its foot.
"STOP!" Mason roared, trying to stop the dark being from putting Danica in serious danger.
Ignoring Mason's order, the being continued to fight on, taking out one abaasy after another until it could feel its energy wearing out. Realizing the issue as well, Danica tried to urge the being to hold on; even though she could fight, she wasn't sure if she could handle the situation that her body was currently in.
"DANICA!" Mason yelled, trying to fight his way into the crowd toward her.
Turning towards his voice, the dark being lost its hold as Danica surged forward, taking control of her body once more, just as an abaasy chomped down on the spot the female rogue had bit her. It wasn't quite healed and easily tore as the creature's tiny teeth sank into her.
Screaming Danica tried to yank the creature off as more jumped on her and began to bite again and again, each time taking small chunks of skin as they did so.
"Get off me!" Danica growled, trying to break free of the abaasy's claws.
Try as she might. She just couldn't fight all of them off; every time she would remove one and subdue it, another would grab her and start attacking again. Feeling her energy begin to drain from the loss of blood she was experiencing, she could only hope that Mason or his packmates would hurry and help.
"LUNA!" This time, it was Chris yelling.
Looking, Danica spotted him making his way through the crowd of creatures with the rest of the pack warriors in tow. Letting out a sigh of relief, she began to feel her consciousness fading; she had reached her limit and wasn't able to hold on anymore. The last thing she could hear before everything went black was Mason's pained cry.
"Hold on." Mason's terrified voice spoke through her oblivion. "Don't you dare give up."
Danica couldn't quite understand what it was that Mason was going on about; what did he mean by give up? Trying as she might to respond and assure him she was fine, she found that she couldn't.
"We need to get her to a healer now." Chris' voice came from somewhere to the side.
"How did she get hurt so bad?" This time it was Nigel's voice, but how had Nigel gotten here? Weren't they in the elven realm?
Again, Danica tried to open her mouth to speak, only to find that she couldn't. She also couldn't open her eyes, no matter how hard she tried. It felt as though she was in a state of paralysis and was completely helpless, only able to listen to what those around her said in panic.
"If we don't do something soon, she is going to bleed out." Mason's agonized voice growled. "Old man, there has to be something you can do."
"If her wolf wasn't locked away, then she would be able to heal." Nigel pointed out in frustration. "Were you not able to find the sorcerer?"
"Of course we weren't able to!" Mason snapped. "Do you know what all we have had to deal with?"
Mason's voice shook as he spoke, breaking Danica's heart entirely. Again, she tried to open her eyes or at least speak, but still found that she couldn't.
"What do you suggest we do?" Ash's voice sounded from beside Danica. "Should I attempt to lift this curse again?"
"What's the probability of you being able to do it this time?" Mason asked as the slightest bit of hope began to lace his words. "Will you be able to do so this time?"
"I don't know," Ash admitted.
"I don't need an I don't know!" Mason growled as the sound of something being hit filled the air.
"You break my desk, and I will break your head." Nigel warned as a knock brought silence across the room.
Danica could hear what sounded like feet moving; her guess was to see who was there. As the door could be heard opening, a collective gasp came from all the men.
"I can help."
Danica felt her heart begin to race at the voice. Wishing she was able to move or even ssee, she felt a pang in her chest at the sound of her adoptive mother's voice.
