Alpha Caysen
Alpha Caysen
It had been two weeks, and Kano’s nerves were on edge. Since his last conversation with Essence, he had not seen her, and he had to admit that he missed her. He couldn’t help but wonder if he’d shared too much; if he’d scared her by his admission of how aggressively he would protect her. He sighed, hearing a knock on the door. Getting up, he opened it, and saw Cayden wearing a big smile.
“Are you still moping?” Cayden asked, and Kano rolled his eyes. “Oh, don’t give me that look. You were moping. I have something that will make you feel better, though. Essence is coming over as a favor to Anastasia to do cake tasting.” Kano shook his head in disappointment, knowing that she wasn’t coming to see him. Cayden smirked. “It was her idea. She asked me to do it here.”
Kano’s wolf perked up and he couldn’t help but smile. Ushering his brother out of his room, he pulled open his closet. Though he couldn’t understand it, he wanted to look nice. He sighed, pushing past his heavy frocks and workout clothes, until his eyes landed on something different. It was the only thing he owned remotely fancy, and he decided that though he’d gained more muscle, it was the best option he had.
Essence’s eyes gleamed as she looked among the cakes. “I have to say, in all honesty, this is the best job I’ve ever had.”
Cayden laughed. “I appreciate you stepping in to help Anastasia with this. She’s been dress shopping, and it’s really been stressing her out.”
She nodded. “Trust me, I know. She’s been trying her best not to step into Bridezilla land, but Godzilla is coming loose slowly, but surely.” She popped a piece of cake in her mouth and scrunched her nose. “No… they focused too much on the color and not enough on the taste.”
He ate a piece and agreed. “It tastes like nothing.”
Continuing through the cakes, Essence and Cayden narrowed it down to their favorite two. She rubbed the back of her neck. “Maybe we can ask Kano what he thinks?”
Cayden smirked. “Maybe… assuming that you can get him from his room. He may be a bit upset that you haven’t been around.”
Her face flushed. “I’m sure he hasn’t noticed.”
“He has, trust me.”
She looked down at the table until she heard Cayden’s fork drop. Looking up, her eyes widened at the sight of Kano. Dressed in a white ruffled shirt that was clearly too small, he struggled to move his arms through the black long caped jacket covering it. He wore tight white pants and brown riding boots that made him grimace in pain. Essence covered her mouth, trying her hardest to keep in her laugh.
“Kano… um, what are you wearing?” Cayden asked as he jerked forward in laughter.
Kano shrugged his shoulders and rubbed the back of his neck. His jacket tore, and Essence could no longer contain it. “Please tell me why you’re dressed like a buff George Washington?” she asked. She saw his face instantly redden, and she stifled her laugh, but tears hit her eyes. Hearing her chuckle, a mortified Kano quickly moved from the dining room. Upon his exit, Cayden and Essence burst into laughter.
“I think he was trying to dress for the occasion,” Cayden said, folding his lips.
She wiped her teary eyes. “Of what? The British coming?”
A few minutes later, Kano heard a knock on his door. With the smell of vanilla seeping through the cracks, he ignored Essence, yet again embarrassed.
She knocked again. “Come on, don’t make me stand out here forever.” Grumbling under his breath, he walked over and opened the door. Essence stood outside holding two plates, grinning at him. “Oh, don’t be mad at me, that outfit is funny as hell.” He rolled his eyes, and she pushed past him, entering his room. “First off, we have to get that off you before you pass out,” she said. She put the plates down and reached her hands out, and he swatted them, glaring. Essence placed her hands on her hips. “Stop being a big baby and let me help you. I know you can’t get out of it on your own.”
Kano inhaled sharply before pointing to the scissors on his desk. She grabbed them and cautiously worked to cut him from the tight jacket and shirt. Helping him from the boots, she heard him sigh with relief. She laughed. “Alright, Myra, I know the corns needed to breathe.” He cut his eyes, and then chuckled, shaking his head. She looked at his pants and her lips parted. “I-I figure you want to do those by yourself,” she said.
He did. He’d tried countless times, but he couldn’t get them off. Frustrated, he covered his face, accepting he’d have to ask his brother and deal with his teasing. Essence looked at the ceiling. “Get some shorts,” she said. Shaking his head feverishly, he saw her cut her eyes. “Let. me. help.” Kano closed his eyes and grabbed a pair of workout shorts. She unbuttoned the pants and heard him groan again. She tugged. “Wiggle, so we can get these off!”
Working hard against one another, Essence finally tugged down the pants. Bent down, she saw Kano’s briefs sitting inside. “Oh my God,” she whispered. She closed her eyes and stood, not wanting to embarrass him. Kano kicked off the pants and frantically grabbed at his briefs. Panicking, she opened her eyes, accidentally getting a full view of his gloriously naked body. “I knew it was huge!” she blurted, covering her eyes. “Oh My God! I’m so sorry! That was horrible!” Kano, absolutely mortified, replaced his briefs and put on his shorts. He couldn’t look at her, his embarrassment at an all-time high.
Essence breathed in deep. “Hey, look man, you have nothing to be embarrassed about. You should feel cocky. Between your legs is something not for the faint of heart.” Kano groaned and waved his hands, begging her to stop talking. Trying to get the image out of her head, she moved away from him and sat on the bed. He looked from her to the door, and she scowled. “You’re putting me out because I saw you naked? Don’t be a hypocrite. I didn’t mean to see you either,” she said.
He thought about her words, realizing she had a point. Plus, though he was embarrassed, he didn’t want her to leave. He sighed and sat beside her, trying to regain his composure.
Essence picked up the plates. “I wanted you to decide on the wedding cake. Cayden and I are tied between these two,” she said. She took a scoop of one with the fork and held it up to him, then shook her head. “Sorry, this is weird, I don’t know what I was thin—” Her words stopped as Kano leaned forward and took the fork in his mouth. He gave her a thumbs-up, and she took a scoop of the other one. Pushing it forward, her lips parted as he ingested the cake.
Kano looked down and saw whipped icing on her fingers.
“Take it.”
His wolf grunted against his chest. It pushed him forward and before he could stop, Kano picked her hand up and licked the icing from Essence’s finger. His eyes widened, and he dropped her hand, backing away. He put up two fingers and Essence stared at him.
“I… um… okay, you like the second. That’s my favorite, too,” she said, slightly dazed.
Putting the plate down, she placed her hand on his bare chest, and traced the etch of his alpha mark. Unsure of what she was doing, she looked up at him. Kano closed his eyes, his body rigid under her touch. When he opened them again, the storm in his now golden orbs made her breath catch. She retracted her hand, cleared her throat, then stood. “I was thinking… you know how Superman and Clark Kent are never in the same room?” He nodded. “Well, seeing how it’s been a century, I’m sure nobody knows what you look like, which means we could go out and nobody would know who you are.”
She saw the panic on his face as he jumped to his feet. She tried to calm him. “Okay. Just hear me out. What if to the outside world you weren’t Kano, you were Caysen? A friend of Cayden who is an alpha from an undisclosed pack? We could go out, and you can experience the world without the pressure of whatever has been keeping you inside. Get you some clothes that fit, and a cut that keeps your hair out of your soup… manis and pedis, and a face mask… oh! A day at the spa!”
As Kano looked into her brown eyes, his mind wandered to the prospect of spending time with her outside of the castle walls. Against his natural panic, he nodded, enjoying the way her face brightened in front of him in response.
