Under The Silent Blood Moon
Under The Silent Blood Moon
Books, tickets, money
Emon mentally reeled off a list of items as he frantically shoved things into his bags. Hearing of the luna’s return, he rushed to get away from Blood Moon. He glared at the ashes in the container on his desk. “This is your fucking fault! You were supposed to kill her!” he screamed. Throwing them from the furniture, he watched as they spilled onto the same spot Johnathan had died years ago. He breathed harshly before turning around to continue his packing. The creak of a floorboard snapped his attention, and he whipped around to face the noise. “Who’s there?!” he asked. He heard silence before another board creaked. The hairs on the back of his neck stood to attention the moment he saw the piercing gold eyes in the darkness. “W-who’s there?” he asked again in sheer terror.
In a whisper, Kano replied, “The abomination.” Stepping from the darkness, the massive red wolf bared his teeth and growled, causing Emon to fall backward.
“Stay away from me!” he screamed, and Kano shook his head slowly.
“I know everything,” he said. “Including what you wrote.” Taking a step forward, Kano stalked him. “You tried to kill her. You almost killed my daughter.”
“I didn’t know she was pregnant, Alpha, I swear!”
Kano struck him hard in the face. “Do not address me as such,” he seethed in anger. Looking down to his paws, he saw Emon’s blood splashed across them from the gash he’d left. He lunged, stopping just before he got to him. Holding his face, Emon darted past him and down his stairs. Walking slowly, Kano watched him pull the doors open and race outside.
Emon rushed to the square and yelled as loudly as he could, “Help! Help! He’s trying to kill me!” His screams tempered when he saw the anger on everyone’s face. Each shifting into their wolves, the members of Blood Moon trapped him in a circle.
Cayden pushed through it, and grinned before speaking. “I told you I was waiting for this day to come. For the day I no longer had to turn a blind eye to your dealings. The day where I could finally absolve my desire to kill you myself.” He barked viciously.“Your abuse of power, your corruption and greed have all led you here. All your years of deception as to who was the man and who was the true monster that lurks in the shadows of this very pack. Today is a great day for me, dear Emon! It is the day I finally get to watch you die at my brother’s hands.” His eyes glowed brighter. “I’ve always known you were the monster, not him, and now, so does all of Blood Moon.”
Emon’s face paled as he looked around at the torch-like eyes of the wolves that glared back at him in repulsion and hunger for his blood. He dropped to his knees upon seeing Kano. “P-please, you can’t kill me. It’s against rules. An alpha can’t kill a pack member without giving them a fair trial!”
Kano looked down at the man who’d torn him from his childhood. Who’d driven his luna away, and almost killed his child. As he continued to stare at the cowering wolf, he felt his own come completely to the surface. Emon’s eyes widened as the bright yellow eyes of his judge and jury peered into his very soul, showing his future in hell. Leaning in close, Kano’s breath grazed his face. “My pack, my rules. I told you this wouldn’t end well for you,” he whispered before he craned his head back and smiled. Tearing into Emon’s neck, his enormous mouth cracked the frail bones. Emon fell to his stomach, his own bones and blood strangling him. His eyes bulged from his head as his velvet blood pooled from the gaping hole.
Their children at home, tucked away, the wolves of Blood Moon watched as the blood moon illuminated the silent, merciless murder. Their alpha’s attack brutal, not one member of Blood Moon that night flinched as they listened to Emon’s last breaths. They didn’t back away as his blood sprayed against their fur. The crack of his bones did nothing but feed into their own blood lust, while Kano’s deranged smile fed their insanity.
Biting deeply, Kano slung Emon’s decapitated head from his mouth. Paws drenched in blood—snout covered in flesh—he dragged the dead man’s skin and draped it in the square’s front for the entire world to see.
One by one, the crowd dispersed in the same silence. Matching his brother’s quiet stride, Cayden walked beside Kano as they made their way back to the castle.
Kanon gave her mother a deep hug. “You all better, Mommy Boo?” she asked.
Essence smiled brightly at her in return. “Yes, Bugaboo, I’m much better.” She arched her brow. “You sure you don’t want to sleep with me? I know this is all new for you and could be scary.”
Kanon shook her head. “Another day. I want to sleep in my new room.”
Essence twisted her lips, amused. “Fine, but you owe me a breakfast date.”
“Okay!”
Tucking her in, Essence gave Kanon a big kiss and stroked her hair. She couldn’t help but let out a little smile at how much her mannerism resembled Kanos’. Waiting until she fell asleep, Essence turned on her night light, and carefully left the room.
Entering her own room, Essence's mouth dropped at the sight of Kano. He stood by the window, completely covered in blood, with eyes that stared wildly at her. She took a step back, afraid, and he let out a grunt. Fists clenched tightly at his sides; his golden eyes never left hers. His jaw tightened as he replayed the revelations he’d overheard earlier. His anger lethal, he couldn’t remember how he’d ended up in her room. As her own eyes blued, she worked up the courage to approach him. “Kano, it’s me,” she said softly, hoping that her words would pull him from the darkness. He tensed, and she lowered her head slightly, before laying it onto him. Hearing his heart’s erratic beating calm, she grabbed his hand, and he silently followed her into the bathroom.
Essence turned on the water of the shower and aided him in removing his bloody clothes. Stepping inside, Kano quickly grabbed her, pulling her in with him. Drenched from the water, she looked up at him before turning her head when he lifted her shirt.
“Sorry. I know I look a lot different now,” she murmured sadly.
Hearing her words, Kano's eyes glassed over. He lifted her head and kissed her deeply, feeling her lightly sob against his mouth. Removing her clothes, the two let the water beat down onto them as it washed the pain of the past away.
Finding her confidence, Essence took her time washing her mate and allowed him to do the same for her. Kano turned off the water and wrapped a towel around his waist. Helping her into her robe, he picked her up and carried her back into the room. Neither said anything as they crawled into the bed. Burrowing under him, Essence held onto him tightly and drifted off to sleep.
