Chapter 113 The Message, Confessions & Chaos

Chapter 113 The Message, Confessions & Chaos
Aeloria POV

Silence lingered. Long enough to make my stomach tighten. Finally... "Then remember who waits for you."

Images flickered across the water. Dorian. Calren. Rhyven. Riven. Zorath. Tavren. Nyra. Arren. Seris. Kaelthys. "They are your anchor."

The vision slowly faded. "They remind you who you are."

The figure began dissolving into countless tiny lights. "The coming days will test every conviction you possess."

I stepped forward instinctively. "Wait." The light paused. "Will we win?"

A long silence answered. Finally..."That depends entirely on whether you remember that even the brightest light casts a shadow."

The stars above me exploded into brilliant white. Everything vanished. I jolted awake with a sharp breath just as the first rays of dawn spilled across the bedroom. For a long moment, I simply lay there, listening to the steady breathing of the people I loved. Then I quietly touched the place over my heart. "I won't forget."

Outside, somewhere beyond the wards, the sea answered with a single crashing wave.

Nethrys POV

For the first time in centuries...I dreaded the sunrise.

Sleep had been fleeting at best. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the alliance I'd forged with Aeloria. I heard the thunder that had sealed our agreement. I saw Katria's smile over dinner, blissfully unaware that everything she believed about me was built upon carefully chosen omissions.

No more. If I truly loved her...She deserved the truth. Even if it cost me everything. I quietly rose from the bed, allowing shadows to pull back the heavy curtains. Pale morning light spilled into the room, illuminating Katria where she slept curled around Rosia. The tiny snow leopard had somehow managed to steal half the blanket and was snoring softly with one paw draped across Katria's arm. A smile tugged at my lips. Gods...I'd become unbearably soft around them. I crossed the room and knelt beside the bed.

"Katria."

She stirred. "Hmm..."

I brushed a strand of hair from her face. "Good morning beautiful."

Her eyes slowly fluttered open before immediately finding mine. "There you are."

A sleepy smile spread across her face. "I thought maybe I'd dreamed you."

"I assure you, I'm quite real."

She reached up, wrapped a hand behind my neck, and pulled me down for a lingering kiss. Rosia made an offended little chirp from between us and Katria laughed. "I think we disturbed the baby."

"I believe you're right."

Rosia glared at me. I was fairly certain the tiny beast blamed me for everything. "I've decided she's your favorite," I muttered. Katria gasped dramatically. "Absolutely not."

"You spoil her."

"I spoil both of you."

"...Fair."

She climbed out of bed, stretching with a contented sigh before slipping on a robe. "Breakfast?"

I hesitated. "Yes."

She immediately noticed. "Nethrys."

I looked away. "There is something I need to tell you."

The warmth in the room shifted. Not disappeared. Changed. Her smile slowly faded. "Is everything alright?"

"No." I met her eyes again. "But it will be."

She studied me for a long moment before nodding. "Then let's eat."

We shared breakfast in the greenhouse. Neither of us spoke much. Katria sensed my unease and, to her credit, didn't push. She simply waited. When the servants quietly disappeared, leaving us alone, I finally drew a slow breath. "Katria..."

She set down her tea. "I'm listening."

I folded my hands together. "I have lied to you."

She didn't interrupt. "I never lied about caring for you." A faint smile touched her lips."I know."

"I lied by omission."

Her expression became thoughtful. "What didn't you tell me?"

I stared out across the flowers. "I wasn't born a king or a God."

She remained silent.

"I was born the son of monsters." The words felt strange after centuries. "My father believed compassion was weakness."

"My mother believed affection created vulnerability." I laughed once, without humor. "They spent my childhood proving both."

Katria's eyes filled with sadness. "Nethrys..."

"They beat me." The words came quietly. "They starved me." Another pause. "They taught me that love was something earned through obedience." My jaw tightened. "I spent most of my childhood believing I was fundamentally unworthy of kindness."

She reached for my hand, and I let her. "When I became old enough to fight back..." My smile turned bitter ."...they sold me."

Her fingers tightened. "To whom?"

"Chaos." The word seemed to darken the air itself. "They offered me to an ancient power in exchange for more magic."

Katria went completely still. "I became a slave." I closed my eyes. "For decades."

"I wasn't a prince."

"I wasn't a son."

"I wasn't even a person."

"I was simply... useful."

Silence stretched between us. "When I finally escaped..." I laughed quietly. "There wasn't much of me left." She had tears running silently down her cheeks now. "I built the Shadow Realm because nowhere else would accept someone touched by Chaos." I looked directly at her. "History remembers me as the villain."

"I allowed it."

"Because sometimes monsters are useful."

She shook her head. "No."

"You don't understand."

"I understand enough."

"No." I swallowed. "You don't." Another deep breath. "There is something else."

Her face paled. "Chaos never stopped searching."

"For you?" I nodded. "And others." I forced myself to continue. "There are ancient bloodlines capable of containing immense power." Her expression slowly changed. Understanding dawned.

"...Me."

I nodded once."Yes."

She stared. "I..." Her voice broke. "I was..."

"The intended vessel." The words tasted like poison. "If Chaos reaches this realm..." I looked away. "They intended to make you the vessel for Anatria."

Katria stopped breathing. At least it seemed that way. "No..."

I nodded. "Yes."

"The moment I learned who you truly were..."

"I decided I would rather burn the world down than allow that to happen."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I met with Aeloria last night."

Her head snapped up. "What?"

"I told her everything."

"Everything?"

"I formed an alliance."

She blinked. "You..."

"I did it because I believe together we may survive." Then I admitted the truth I'd been avoiding. "I also did it because..." I smiled sadly. "...I have fallen in love with you."

The greenhouse became impossibly quiet. "I could not watch you become a sacrifice."

"I refuse."

"I will kill gods before I allow that."

When I finally stopped speaking, Katria said nothing. She simply stared at me. One minute. Then another. The silence became unbearable. Perhaps I'd finally said too much. Perhaps she hated me. Perhaps...She burst into tears. Not quiet tears. Not graceful tears. The kind that shook her entire body. I stood instantly. "Katria..."

She threw herself into my arms. "I love you."

The words were muffled against my chest. "I love you so much."

I froze. She clung tighter. "I trust you."

My eyes burned. "You shouldn't."

She pulled back just enough to look at me. "I do."

"I don't deserve that trust."

"No." My voice cracked despite myself. "I truly don't."

I cupped her face gently. "But I will treasure it."

"I swear to you."

"I will spend every day proving worthy of it." I kissed her forehead. Then rested mine against hers. "From this moment forward..." My shadows curled gently around her wrists before dissolving into silver light ."...you are my mate." Her breath caught. "And no vessel for anyone."

"Never."

"Not while I still live."

She smiled through her tears. "I like the sound of that." I laughed softly."As do I." Then reality returned. "We may have to leave." She frowned. "The island."

I nodded. "Aeloria has prepared it."

"I don't want to run."

"Neither do I."

"But sometimes surviving is the bravest choice."

She sighed heavily."I hate it."

"I know."

She nodded once. "Then I'll pack."

"We have two days."

She stood before immediately wrapping her arms around me again. This time the kiss was slow, certain, and filled with promises neither of us needed to speak aloud. When we finally separated, she smiled through tear-stained cheeks. "I guess we'd better start packing."

I smiled back. "For the first time in a very long while..." The words came easier than I expected. "...I believe we might actually have a future worth fighting for."

Chaos God POV

Silence. It had been far too long.

The ancient prison surrounding me stretched endlessly in every direction, forged from forgotten magic and divine sacrifice. Black chains thicker than mountains bound fragments of my essence, each rune glowing with hateful silver light. I hated the silence. I hated the waiting. Most of all...I hated being ignored.

"Nethrys..." My voice rippled through the void. No answer. Again. "Nethrys." Nothing. The shadows that had always obeyed him no longer reached for me. Their connection had weakened. They were frayed and wrong. A low growl rolled through the prison, shaking the ancient chains. "He avoids me."

Across the darkness, another presence stirred. Anatria. She smiled. A beautiful thing. A terrifying thing. "You feel it too."

"I do." Her crimson eyes narrowed. "Our king of shadows has become... distracted."

"No." I closed my eyes, reaching toward the thread that still connected me to the mortal realm. "He has become disloyal." The realization ignited a rage that shook reality itself. The prison cracked. Ancient runes flared desperately, forcing my power back into confinement. "He dares."

Anatria's smile faded. "The girl."

"Katria."

I nodded slowly. "She has become his weakness."

"And weakness breeds betrayal." My power lashed outward. Searching. Searching...There. Varos. Unlike Nethrys, Varos answered immediately. "My lord."

His voice echoed through the prison as a shimmering image formed before me. The Headmaster knelt instantly, his forehead pressed against the stone. "You summoned me."

"I should not have needed to." Varos stiffened. "My lord?"

"Nethrys no longer answers."

Silence. The man's face slowly paled. "I feared as much."

"You suspected?"

"He has changed."

Varos looked up carefully. "The girl has influenced him."

"Katria."

"Yes."

I laughed. The sound made Varos visibly flinch. "So." I leaned forward. "The Shadow King believes himself capable of love."

Disgusting, pathetic, and predictable. Anatria stepped beside me, her voice smooth as poisoned silk. "He forgets who forged him."

"He forgets who gave him purpose."

"He forgets who owns him." My smile disappeared. "He belongs to no one now." The words tasted bitter. "Nethrys has chosen."

I rose to my full height, chains groaning under the strain. "Then so shall we." Varos swallowed. "My lord?"

"The Shadow King and his queen are now enemies." His eyes widened. "Katria as well?"

"Especially Katria." The prison darkened. "If she cannot serve as Anatria's vessel..." My gaze hardened."...then she serves no purpose."

Varos bowed his head immediately. "What are your orders?" I spread my hands. The void around us filled with monstrous silhouettes. Creatures born from corrupted shadow. Winged horrors. Twisted beasts. Living nightmares. "The castle falls."

Varos looked almost eager. "I'll gather the nobles."

"No." My voice boomed. "You will gather everyone." His head snapped upward. "The noble houses."

"The mercenaries."

"The corrupted beasts."

"The cultists."

"The loyalists."

"The broken."

"The forgotten." Every servant still loyal to Chaos. Every monster still capable of fighting. Every soul willing to sell itself for power. "Burn the Shadow King's kingdom."

Anatria smiled once more. "And bring us his queen." Varos rose slowly. "As you command." His image dissolved, the connection ended, and I stood alone once more inside my prison. But this time...I smiled. Nethrys believed he had escaped me. He believed love had made him stronger. Love. Such a fragile little thing. Soon he would learn what every servant of Chaos eventually learned.

Everything he loved...would become the weapon used to destroy him.
