Chapter 39 Chapter 0039
•CASSANDRA•
I pulled Dante to the restroom and closed the door.
"Mason sent the elders to come and ask me to go with them so they'd find out how I knew about the nightshade, and so I wanted to ask you to watch Alena until I am back."
"You're going to Silvercrest?" he asked, his tone laced with confusion. "I thought we talked about this and agreed to cancel Silvercrest. You know what they've done to you. So, this might be a trap, Cassandra."
"Can you watch my daughter until I am back?" I asked, avoiding his question. "I will be back as soon as I can."
"If you’re insisting on leaving, then I am coming with you," he answered. "I won't stay here and let you endanger your life. Not again."
"This is not your decision to make, Dante," I scowled. "You and I aren't together."
I attempted to walk past him and head out the door when he grabbed my wrist and held me back.
His eyes locked on mine, and for a moment, he reminded me of the kiss we shared in the morning.
When he held me as if I were the only girl in the world and told me how much he loved me. For a moment, I wanted to believe he meant those words, but his image with Amelia cut through my memories, and I yanked his hand off mine.
I remembered everything Amelia told me about him. When she said Dante had dated many people in the hospital before I arrived.
She was probably telling the truth, so I wasn't sure I could trust him after that.
"What do you want?"
"We aren't together?"
"Are we together?" I directed the question at him. Perhaps I missed something because he was flirting with Amelia a few moments ago.
So, he couldn't expect me to think we were exclusive.
"I thought I made my intentions clear to you when I told you I love you," he answered. "Are we going to forget that conversation as if it never happened?"
"I don't know what you want me to say, Dante. I'm not the one flirting with a colleague and expecting you to believe we are together," I shot back, annoyed that he wouldn't let me leave.
Elder Draven and Elder Orin were waiting for me in the lobby, and I didn’t want to keep them waiting. Not when I wanted to prove my innocence to them.
"I'm flirting with a colleague?" He chuckled, clearly amused. "I wasn't flirting with Amelia. You should know me better than that. She got hurt during my surgery, so I had to ensure that she was fine. Nothing more."
"It doesn't matter what happened," I scoffed, feeling bad that I had accused him of cheating without facts. "I have to be on my way to Sutherland as we speak."
"You believe me, don't you?" He leaned closer, grabbed my hand, and looked at me with those eyes he knew always made my knees weak. “You know there will never be another woman except you. So, do you believe me?”
I looked at him and rolled my eyes. "Fine, I believe you."
"That's my girl," he said as he leaned even closer and kissed my forehead. It was so grounding, and for a moment, I felt my knees growing weak.
Then I pulled away and straightened my shirt.
"I will call you when I get there," I said as I stepped back. "And if Alena asks where I am, please tell her I am working all night to save a patient. She would understand and won't ask you any more questions."
"You shouldn't worry yourself about Alena. She and I get along more than you think," he smirked as he leaned closer and pinned me against the door, causing my breath to hitch.
"If Mason and his pack threaten you, please call me," he whispered as he kissed my neck. "I hate bullies, so I promise I will be there to teach them a lesson."
I giggled as he nibbled my earlobe and kissed my neck, causing goosebumps on my skin.
"I will call you, Superman."
"I mean it," he insisted, kissing me. "If Mason dares to hurt you, his entire pack will pay for it."
I giggled as I thought of him coming to my rescue as he had always done, but I didn't want to dream of it much.
He had never shifted before, so it was better if he stayed behind with Alena.
"I will call you," I said as I pushed him off me. "I have to go, Mr. Lark, before you change my mind."
"I love you," he muttered again as I tilted the doorknob. And after a long moment, I finally answered him.
"I love you."
I walked out and went to my office to grab my handbag before I headed out to the lobby.
The elders were still there, waiting for me. And when I approached, they led the way to the parking lot and helped me get inside their car.
On our way to Sutherland, I wondered if my son would recognize me even with my scent masked, or if he had truly forgotten about me.
As the car drew closer, my chest tightened.
