Chapter 105: Conduct in Question
"You make it sound so simple. Joshua has been completely seduced by Ava now. He won't marry me at all, and keeps brushing me off with some excuse about 'responsibility.'" Mia was practically going crazy with anger.
"Responsibility? What responsibility?"
What responsibility could he have to an ex-wife?
"How would I know? If I knew, would I be in this situation?"
First Victor was her stumbling block, then Ava came back and messed up all her plans, and now there's this unknown "responsibility" blocking her way. No wonder Mia was losing it.
Katya narrowed her eyes and murmured, "For a man to feel responsible toward a woman he's already divorced, the only possibility is that she's carrying his child."
"What?" Mia jumped to her feet, staring at Katya with wide, furious eyes, her breath catching in her throat. But then she reconsidered, "Impossible. Last time at the Thomas family, Ava said she didn't have children. Even if she was lying, just based on that fall down the stairs last time, if she had a child, it would be gone by now."
"Is it possible they already had a child before?" Katya boldly speculated.
Mia was startled by Katya's words. She frowned and thought carefully, and suddenly a face popped into her mind—a little girl who looked extremely similar to Ava.
It was that child she ran into at the hospital. The kid looked about five or six years old. Ava left five years ago. Could she have already been pregnant when she left?
She bit her teeth hard, forcing herself to dismiss this ridiculous idea, but it kept growing stronger in her mind.
"Mom, Dad, help me investigate everything about Ava from five years ago. The more detailed, the better."
"What are you thinking?"
"At the hospital, I ran into a child who looked a lot like Ava. I'm afraid..."
"You mean that child might be Ava's?"
"I'm not sure." Mia's heart was in chaos. If it was true, what should she do? She'd already been kicked out of the Thomas Villa. If Ava also had a child, they might very well rekindle their relationship, and then she'd have no chance at all.
"I'll look into this matter. The most important thing right now is to secure your position as department head at the hospital. I'll donate another batch of medical equipment to your hospital. You must get that department head position no matter what," Oscar said.
A flash of ruthlessness crossed Mia's eyes. "I understand, Dad. I'm determined to get that department head position."
Mia kept clenching her fists. She'd already lost to Ava once at the Thomas Villa—at the hospital, she absolutely couldn't lose to Ava again.
The next day, as soon as the two children woke up, they rushed over to wish her a happy birthday and presented their gifts.
Ava accepted them with a smile, feeling warm inside. "Thank you, my darlings."
And Isabella—last night right at midnight, she'd sent a long birthday message, very ceremonious.
Ava was touched.
She'd arranged to meet Joshua at noon, but in the morning Ava still had to go to the hospital.
After all, patients' conditions couldn't be delayed.
As soon as she arrived at the hospital, she saw many doctors heading to the cardiology office.
Just as Ava expected, the King family was pursuing the matter of Mia nearly killing Briar through surgical error.
"Mr. King, massive bleeding during surgery is unavoidable. I was just about to remove the tumor when the bleeding suddenly started. It happened without warning, I..."
Mia looked haggard and exhausted, desperately trying to distance herself from responsibility, though her face showed an expression of self-blame. "But when the patient suddenly had this complication, as the lead surgeon I do bear responsibility. I'm very sorry, Mr. King."
Briar's son Timothy looked at Mia with stern, tightly furrowed brows.
"If I remember correctly, Dr. Wilson, you assured my mother that following your surgical plan, everything would be fine. What happened? Halfway through the surgery there's massive bleeding, and not only did you fail to respond immediately, you panicked and nearly killed my mother. If it weren't for that other doctor who came in later, the old lady would have died on your operating table.
You made such confident promises, yet you made a surgical error, and now you're still making excuses. This makes me question not only your competence but also your character."
Mia kept her head down, crying softly. "Mr. Timothy King, any doctor would panic facing that kind of massive bleeding. Mrs. Briar King's body was already weak. During the surgery, I was extremely careful, not daring to make the slightest mistake. That situation was beyond my expectations. I really didn't anticipate it. But even if Dr. Davis hadn't come in, I could have completed the surgery. I had already found the bleeding point."
So she was still blaming Ava for taking over her surgery.
Hearing this made Ava sneer coldly, as did the surrounding doctors. How shameless could she be to spout such nonsense?
