Chapter 309: Karma's Coming
Once they reached Emily's office, Kate looked around appreciatively. "Emily, your office is huge! I can sit anywhere—how about I take that couch by the door? That way, I'll spot anyone coming in immediately."
"Perfect, sit wherever you're comfortable. By the way, would you like something to drink? Coffee? Soda? Or maybe some juice?"
"Juice, definitely! Boot camp had a no-sweets policy, and I've been craving something sugary forever."
Emily smiled and asked her assistant to prepare some juice.
Kate settled into the couch with a satisfied stretch. "Emily, you're the best. I can't believe I get to work with you now."
"From now on, you're my personal bodyguard. If you need anything at all, just let me know."
"Absolutely!" Kate nodded enthusiastically.
Just then, Charles walked in. Seeing Kate, he smiled. "Kate, welcome aboard."
Kate immediately stood up. "Thank you, Charles, for giving me this opportunity!"
Charles waved dismissively. "Don't thank me—your skills are what convinced me Emily would be safe with you. I'm entrusting Emily's protection to you."
Kate thumped her chest confidently. "Don't worry! With me around, no one will lay a finger on Emily!"
Charles nodded approvingly and walked over to Emily. "So? How do you like the bodyguard I chose for you?"
Emily smiled and nodded. "I couldn't be happier with your choice."
"Good. Kate's extremely skilled—having her by your side gives me real peace of mind."
Kate blushed at the praise. "Charles, stop it—you're going to give me a big head."
All three of them laughed.
Meanwhile, in Kismet's office, the atmosphere was anything but cheerful.
Kismet sat at her desk, her expression dark as a storm cloud.
Kate's arrival had completely disrupted her plans.
With Kate protecting Emily, getting close enough to strike would be nearly impossible.
Worse yet, Kate was clearly in Emily's corner, which made her a significant threat.
She needed to find a way to get rid of Kate.
Or maybe... turn Kate to her side.
But Kate had never liked her, not since they were children. Winning her over would be no easy task.
Kismet clenched her teeth, her gaze turning ice-cold.
Emily, you think having Kate protect you makes you untouchable? Think again.
Your reckoning is coming soon.
At noon, several suspicious figures appeared skulking around the Windsor Group building.
Emily was in her office reviewing documents while Kate lounged on the couch, munching on snacks and scrolling through her phone, occasionally glancing up to check on Emily's safety.
"Emily, want some chips?" Kate waved the snack bag.
Emily looked up with a smile. "No thanks, you enjoy them. Just don't eat too many—they're not great for you."
"Got it, Emily! This is my last bag, I promise," Kate said cheerfully.
Just then, someone knocked on the office door.
Her assistant rushed in, looking troubled. "Ms. Johnson, there's a situation downstairs."
Emily set down her papers. "What kind of situation?"
"There's a middle-aged couple protesting in the lobby. They're demanding to see you, claiming that... that you killed their daughter."
Emily's face immediately paled.
Kate sprang to her feet, her expression turning sharp and alert. "Who the hell dares to make false accusations against Emily?"
"They say their daughter's name was Zoey, and that you drove her to suicide at boot camp."
Emily's heart sank.
Zoey.
The girl who had constantly caused trouble at boot camp, who had ultimately tried to murder Emily with a poisonous snake, only to be caught and supposedly commit suicide out of guilt.
But Emily had always suspected that Zoey hadn't killed herself—she'd been murdered to keep her quiet.
Now Zoey's parents had come looking for answers.
"Where are they now?" Emily asked.
"In the main lobby. They've been causing a scene for a while now. Security tried to escort them out, but they refused to leave. They say they won't budge until they see you. There's quite a crowd gathering—employees and random passersby."
Emily stood up. "I'll go down and see them."
Kate immediately rose as well. "Emily, I'm coming with you. I know Zoey's parents—they're not good people. When Zoey was at boot camp, they'd constantly call demanding money, never caring about their daughter's wellbeing."
Emily nodded. "Alright, let's go together."
The three of them headed downstairs.
As soon as they reached the main lobby, they could hear wailing and shouting.
"My poor Zoey! She was so young—she should have had a bright future ahead of her, not lying cold in a coffin!"
"Emily! You murderer!"
In the center of the lobby, a couple in their fifties sat on the floor, crying and screaming.
The man wore a faded, threadbare shirt, his face gaunt and lined with wrinkles. The woman's hair was disheveled, her eyes red and swollen from what looked like hours of crying.
A crowd had gathered around them—Windsor Group employees mixed with curious onlookers.
"What's going on?"
"I heard Ms. Johnson killed their daughter."
"Really? Ms. Johnson doesn't seem like that type."
"Do you actually know her, though? Rich people are capable of anything."
"I doubt it. Probably just trying to shake her down for money."
Murmurs rippled through the crowd, opinions split.
Emily walked forward calmly. "I'm Emily. You wanted to see me?"
The couple spotted her and immediately became more agitated.
The woman scrambled to her feet and jabbed her finger at Emily's face. "It's you! You're the one who killed my daughter Zoey! You should be rotting in prison!"
The man also stood up, glaring venomously. "Emily, you targeted my daughter Zoey constantly at boot camp, and then you drove her to suicide! You owe us an explanation!"
Emily regarded them coolly. "Zoey committed suicide out of guilt. It had nothing to do with me."
The woman shrieked, "Bullshit! My daughter was such a good girl—she would never kill herself! You must have driven her to it! You used your connection to the Windsor family to bully her! Now that she's dead, you think you can just sweep this under the rug?"
Kate couldn't help but interject. "Ma'am, you need evidence before making accusations. Zoey constantly harassed Emily at boot camp. The final incident involved her trying to kill Emily with a venomous snake. After she was caught, she took her own life out of guilt. How is that Emily's fault?"
The man glared at Kate. "And who the hell are you? What gives you the right to defend her? Did she pay you off?"
Kate's face flushed with anger. "I was also at boot camp—I know what really happened! Everything was Zoey's own doing. Emily had nothing to do with it!"
The woman sneered. "I bet you're all in on it together!"
The murmurs around them grew louder.
"This young woman seems honest enough—maybe we should believe her?"
"Not necessarily. Rich people can buy anything, including false witnesses."
"I think Ms. Johnson seems decent. She's always been good to the employees."
"Who knows? Wealthy families have all kinds of dark secrets. There might be more to this story."
