Chapter 75: Shadows of the Past

Chapter 75: Shadows of the Past
The fire between them still lingered in the air, wrapping around Isla like an intoxicating haze. She lay against Damian’s chest, his heartbeat steady beneath her palm, but something in her refused to settle. It wasn’t just the warmth of his body, the steady rhythm of his breath, it was something deeper, something older. The quiet peace between them should have been enough to calm her mind, but the truth she could no longer deny clawed its way to the surface, sharp and insistent.

The ruins, the vision, the feeling of something dark pulling at the edges of her soul, it was all connected and it was coming for her.

Isla exhaled softly, her fingers absently tracing the lines of Damian’s chest, her touch light, distracted. She tried to focus on him, to lose herself in the way he held her, but her thoughts were everywhere, twisting and tangling. “Do you ever wonder what happens after this?” she asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.

Damian’s hum was a low vibration in her ear, and his grip around her waist tightened instinctively. His warmth surrounded her, but the tension in the air grew heavier. “After what?” His question was simple, but she felt the weight of it. There was an unspoken understanding between them, a connection that didn’t need words. Still, she couldn’t help but ask.

“After the war. After Vincent. When it’s over,” she clarified, lifting her gaze to meet his, searching for something she couldn’t put into words.

He was silent for a long moment, his expression unreadable, his eyes dark and stormy, reflecting a depth of emotion she could never fully understand. Then he shifted, rolling them both onto their sides, so he could look into her eyes directly. His face was close, his breath mingling with hers, and she could see the rawness in his expression, the vulnerability that no one else had ever been allowed to see.

“Are you afraid there won’t be an after?” His voice was quiet, but there was an edge to it, something dark, something real.
She swallowed, her throat becoming tight. “Maybe.”

His fingers brushed gently over her cheek, a touch so tender it almost made her ache. But his eyes burned with an intensity that made her heart race, as if he knew something she didn’t. “There will be, Isla. And when it comes, I’m keeping you.”

The certainty in his voice made her chest ache. It was a promise, but it was more than that. It was the weight of his resolve, the way he spoke like he had no doubts, like they were already bound, already tied to whatever future was waiting for them. She pressed her palm to his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath her fingers, grounding her in the present, even as the future loomed over them like a storm.

“I’m not going anywhere, Damian,” she murmured, her voice thick with emotion. And yet, even as she said the words, a strange unease settled in the pit of her stomach, cold and heavy. She couldn’t explain it. She wanted to believe her own words, but the sense that something was changing inside her, something she couldn’t control, refused to fade.

By morning, the world was set back into motion. The camp had come alive with activity, movement and preparation, the quiet hum of anxious anticipation hanging thick in the air. Vincent’s shadow loomed over them all, even as his presence was distant for the moment. But everyone knew that it wouldn’t stay that way for long. Cassian and Magnus had already gone ahead to scout the ruins, while Brienne and Alaine worked with the warriors, sharpening blades, preparing for the inevitable battle.

But Isla felt the pull of something else. Something more than war, more than Vincent’s ever-looming threat. She found herself walking toward Lucia, the oracle who had been watching her with those knowing golden eyes. The weight of Lucia’s gaze was something Isla couldn’t ignore, no matter how hard she tried.
The moment Isla approached, Lucia’s lips curved into a knowing smile, her eyes gleaming with some secret knowledge. “You feel it now, don’t you?” she asked, her voice like silk.

Isla exhaled sharply, the words caught in her throat. “I don’t even know what it is.”

Lucia’s gaze darkened, and she tilted her head slightly. “Blood remembers, even when we don’t.”

Isla’s pulse quickened, her breath catching in her throat. The oracle’s words sent a chill through her, something ancient and dangerous stirring deep within her veins. She could feel it—this strange power awakening inside her, something she wasn’t sure she was ready for. “What does that mean?” she asked, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to sound composed.

Lucia’s eyes flickered with something unreadable. “There was a time when wolves with golden eyes were not just stories. They were rulers, guides, the ones who walked between the worlds.”

A shiver ran through Isla, her skin prickling with unease. The words rang in her ears like an omen, a warning she couldn’t shake. “And Vincent?” she asked, barely able to force the words out.

Lucia’s expression darkened, the weight of her words settling between them like a heavy fog. “He is trying to reclaim something long buried. A power lost to time. And you, Isla… you are the key.”

Her words struck Isla like a lightning bolt, freezing her in place. The truth was dawning on her now, crashing into her with a force that left her reeling. She had always known she was different, but she hadn’t realized how much. She was more than just the girl who had crossed paths with Damian, more than just someone caught in the middle of a war. She was connected to something much older, something that had been waiting for her.

By nightfall, the scouts had returned. The tension in the camp had shifted, the air thick with the knowledge that the battle was imminent. Damian stood at the war table, his expression a mask of stone as Cassian laid out the map. The room fell silent as Cassian spoke, his voice grim.

“The ruins are crawling with Vincent’s men,” Cassian said, pointing to a section of the map marked in red. “But that’s not the worst part.”

He paused, and everyone leaned in. “There’s a ritual site. Something ancient. And from what we can tell, Vincent’s already started.”

The room fell into an uneasy silence.

Alaine cursed under her breath, her fists clenched at her sides. “He’s trying to awaken something.”

Brienne’s jaw tightened, her eyes sharp. “Then we stop him before he finishes.”

Isla’s stomach twisted, the words sinking into her bones like ice. The past wasn’t just whispering to her anymore. It was screaming, demanding her attention. Damian’s eyes found hers across the room, their gaze locking in a silent understanding. This was it. The truth waiting in those ruins, the power Vincent sought, it was all tied to her and she wasn’t sure she was ready to face it.

But there was no turning back now.
