Chapter 72: Whispers of Blood and Fate

Chapter 72: Whispers of Blood and Fate
The ruins loomed before them, jagged remnants of an era long past. Moss clung to the fractured stones like a living shroud, and the air thrummed with the hush of long-forgotten voices.

Isla’s pulse pounded in her ears as she stepped forward, boots crunching softly against ancient gravel. The stronghold reeked of more than decay, it reeked of memory and of silence that is too thick to be natural, as if time itself had paused here, waiting for something, someone, to stir what had long been dormant.

Damian appeared at her side, close enough for her to feel the heat radiating from his body. “Stay close.”

She didn’t argue. Something about this place felt sentient, like the walls were watching, remembering. The pull in her chest intensified with each step. It wasn’t pain, not exactly, it was hunger… some type of need and it wasn’t entirely hers.

Alaine and Cassian moved ahead, blades low, feet silent. Brienne followed behind them, eyes narrowed, her hand a constant shadow over the hilt of her dagger. The warriors moved as one, a living current of caution and readiness.

Leo and Magnus secured the rear, issuing sharp, silent commands to the soldiers flanking them. Raven had disappeared into the dark edges of the ruins, her presence a whisper in the wind.

But it was Isla who felt it first.

A pulse. Deep and internal. Not from the ground beneath her, or the ruins themselves. From her.
She inhaled sharply and pressed a hand to her stomach. The hum intensified at her touch. It wasn’t pain, not quite, but it unsettled her, rooted itself inside her ribs and bloomed outward like heat.

Damian’s attention snapped toward her, all other senses overridden by the instinct to protect her. “What is it?”
“I…” Isla’s voice faltered. “I don’t know.”

The rustle of movement ahead interrupted her words.

Then, a voice, low, velvet-edged, and laced with dark amusement. “You took your time getting here.”

Vincent emerged from the shadows like a memory reborn. The torchlight flickered across his golden eyes, illuminating the cruel tilt of his smile.

Behind him came figures cloaked in the colors of the old bloodline, deep crimson and obsidian. Their faces were impassive, unreadable. But they were warriors, that much was clear. Trained, ready, loyal only to one thing.
Vincent’s eyes never left her.

“You feel it, don’t you?” he said softly, almost reverently. “The change.”

Damian stepped in front of her, his voice low and dangerous. “If you think you can come near her—”

Vincent held up a hand, still smiling. “Spare me the threats, Alpha. You’re not the one this is about.”

His gaze flicked back to Isla, softening in a way that sent a chill up her spine.

“It’s about her.”

Isla stood her ground, fists clenched at her sides even as her body screamed for her to run. “I know enough to end this,” she said, voice sharp and sure.
Vincent laughed. A sound that grated like iron dragged across stone. “Oh, little wolf… you have no idea what’s coming.” Then he moved.

Blades rang out, steel singing through the air. Damian met Vincent head-on, fury igniting every blow. Around them, chaos erupted, growls, shouts, the clash of metal against bone and stone.

One of Vincent’s soldiers came at Isla, blade raised. She dodged without thinking, body moving faster than it should have. Muscle and instinct aligned in perfect synchrony. Another attacker lunged, and again, she moved, not just with speed, but with clarity. As if something within her had taken over. She wasn’t just fighting. She was protecting something. Someone.

Vincent noticed.

From across the battlefield, his grin widened. “It’s already begun.”

The battle didn’t last long. Vincent’s warriors retreated with calculated precision, fading into the shadows as quickly as they’d come. But they didn’t leave empty-handed.

On one of the ruined walls, scorched into the ancient stone, was a mark.

A sigil.

The emblem of the First Bloodline.

They weren’t finished.

They were only beginning.

As the dust settled and the last growl faded into silence, Isla found herself alone near the crumbling edge of the ruins. The sigil glowed faintly in the twilight. Her hand hovered near it but did not touch. A memory, not hers, flashed behind her eyes: a girl with glowing amber eyes, marked by fire, standing where she stood.

Footsteps behind her.

She didn’t turn. Not until she felt him, his warmth. Damian’s arms slid around her waist, pulling her flush against him, anchoring her to the present.
“You scared me tonight,” he murmured, his voice rough with emotion, jaw tight against her temple.
She leaned into him. “I’m scared, too.”

He held her tighter, like he could keep the world out just by willing it so. “Whatever is happening… we’ll face it together. You’re not alone in this.”

She closed her eyes as his lips brushed the skin of her neck, soft, slow and grounding. A tremor went through her. Not just from fear, but from need. She’d been unraveling for days, between the waking power, the unspoken fears, the truths yet to come.
It was about him, always him.

She turned in his arms, her hands pressing to his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart. He looked down at her, eyes darkened to molten silver, his expression raw and unguarded. His fingers slid along her spine, slow and reverent. She arched slightly under his touch, breath catching.
“I need you,” she whispered.

His mouth claimed hers, urgent and possessive. The kiss deepened as her hands fisted in his shirt. When he pulled back, just slightly, their foreheads touched.

“I’m yours,” he breathed. “Whatever comes next… I’m already yours.”

The ruins stood silent around them, and the mark glowed ever brighter.
