The first light of dawn barely touched the horizon, but within the Fortress, the air was thick with urgency. Isla’s breaths came faster now, her hand pressed over the swell of her belly where the child stirred with fierce insistence.
Damian never left her side. His eyes, dark and stormy, held hers as she tried to steady the tremors shaking through her body. The birth was beginning, an event long prophesied, long awaited. “Isla,” Damian murmured, voice low but steady. “Breathe with me. You are not alone, I love you Babe.”
Her fingers found his, gripping as tightly as she could. “It’s starting… I feel it, every part of me is burning and breaking.”
Aela and Aiden stood nearby, their presence a calm in the storm. Aela’s hands were skilled, warm as she prepared the birthing chamber with ancient rites, while Aiden’s sharp eyes scanned the room, ready for any threat.
“You are strong,” Aela assured Isla. “The child will come through you, through us all.”
Isla’s gaze flickered to her mother-in-law, then to Aiden, the patriarch whose wisdom carried the weight of generations. “I hope I am strong enough.”
“You already are,” Damian said fiercely, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. “You carry the future.”
Outside the fortress gates, the murmurs of approaching riders stirred the early morning mist. They came from many Houses, warriors, Seers, and earth-callers who had answered the desperate summons.
Brienne led a contingent of Seers, their faces solemn but resolute. Behind them, Rohen and Lucia brought fighters from the outer borders, while Alaine and Leo came with a small battalion, ready to defend the Fortress and the child within.
The tension was palpable, the threat of Cassian’s forces looming ever closer. But more than that, the presence of these allies marked a shift, the disparate factions of the Veil, once fractured and hesitant, were beginning to unite.
“We have no time to waste,” Brienne said quietly, her eyes bright with determination. “The Elders grow restless. The Veylun are afixiating us. Cassian’s shadow creeps further.”
Leo tightened his grip on his sword hilt. “We’ll hold them. We must.”
Back inside, the birth’s labor grew stronger, waves of pain crashing over Isla with a force that left her breathless.
Aela guided her with steady hands, murmuring ancient chants that pulsed like a heartbeat through the room.
