Chapter 170 Arthur Imprisoned
Chapter 170 Arthur Imprisoned
Rolf smiled and picked up his coffee again, taking a sip.
"Goodbye."
Seeing he wouldn't answer, Astrid knew she wouldn't get anything out of him. She stood up and strode away.
After she left, the smile vanished instantly from Rolf's face. Looking at the untouched cup of coffee she'd left behind, his eyes grew darker and deeper.
Then he took out his phone and made a call.
"The materials we prepared can be handed over now."
After saying this, Rolf forcefully grabbed the coffee in front of him and drank it all in one gulp.
Astrid took a car home, not noticing Rolf's strange behavior.
……
A few days later, at eight in the morning, Catherine helped Arthur straighten his suit and saw him to the door.
Arthur's phone rang. After he answered, an anxious and panicked voice came through.
"Mr. Prescott, something's happened. I came to your office to organize your files, and a group of people showed up, saying your things couldn't be touched."
Arthur strode outside, asking coldly, "What people?"
His office, his files—they'd always been handled by his assistant. Everyone at the company knew that.
Arthur thought whoever was stopping his assistant must be crazy.
"You're Arthur, right?" Unexpectedly, a stranger's voice came through the phone. "Come to Prescott Jewelers. There are some things we need to discuss with you in person."
The other party's tone was serious, their attitude cold and hard.
Arthur's face instantly turned pale. He suddenly stopped, turned back to look at Catherine, "Pack those things up properly. Don't let anyone find them."
Seeing him being both open yet cryptic about it, Catherine felt uneasy and wanted to ask more, but Arthur had already opened the car door and driven off.
Prescott Jewelers.
From a distance, Arthur saw his office area completely surrounded by people. Everyone looked stern, whispering to each other. His frown deepened.
"Mr. Prescott," someone called out.
Seeing him, everyone silently made way for a path.
Inside the office, several uniformed officials were going through his files. Arthur's assistant stood helplessly to the side, hands clasped together.
"Arthur? This is a search warrant. Please cooperate with our investigation." A tax investigator stepped forward and handed him a document for review.
Arthur looked at the keywords on the document—"fraud," "false accounts," "tax evasion"—his pupils contracting sharply.
He'd been so careful about those activities, and the people he'd worked with had been replaced several times. How was he exposed?
"Based on what we have now, you should get a lawyer," the tax investigator said coldly, offering this icy suggestion.
After reading the document, Arthur went limp, staggering to sit on the office sofa, his vision going dark.
He'd thought the most dangerous place was the safest place. So many years had passed without incident. Last month's false accounts—he hadn't had time to transfer them yet.
The tax department had moved fast.
Someone close to him must have betrayed him!
It couldn't be Arthur's assistant—they were already in the same boat. Isabella was even less likely; she still didn't know anything. As for Astrid, since she started working at Prescott Jewelers, he'd been present every time she came to the office, so she couldn't possibly know either.
Isabella received a message from her confidant. The people in the photo looked hostile. She quickly called Catherine to notify her.
Right after the call, Michelle's people heard Isabella making the call and snatched her phone away.
Arthur was taken away by the tax investigators in front of everyone.
When Astrid learned the news, Arthur was already in prison.
Hearing this, she was somewhat shocked. She felt it was related to her, but also found it hard to believe.
She didn't know if this was Rolf's warning to her, or if eliminating Arthur was already the second step in Rolf's plan.
It was possible that the third step in Rolf's plan would be her turn.
All kinds of news came flooding in.
Some said Arthur was caught by the tax department because he'd done too many bad things. Others said he'd offended someone, and the tax investigators had come prepared.
Astrid decided to visit him in prison to understand what had happened.
In prison, when Arthur saw it was her, he deliberately covered his face with his hand.
Unfortunately, his movement was a step too slow. Astrid saw the wounds on his face.
"What happened?" Astrid asked.
"You came here to mock me, didn't you? Get lost once you've seen enough." Arthur hung up the phone and resolutely walked away.
Astrid watched his retreating figure, her heart like dead water.
At the prison entrance, she ran into Catherine, who had also come to visit.
Astrid was about to pretend she hadn't seen her, but Catherine had no intention of letting her go. She looked at her with a harsh expression, "Astrid, are you satisfied now?"
"What good does it do you to lock him up? Will Rolf let you back into the company?" Catherine clutched her bag tightly, her eyes bloodshot.
If it weren't for Lillian, she would have been the one to marry Arthur. In high society circles, she wouldn't have been looked down upon everywhere, wouldn't have fallen to this point—Isabella being mocked as an illegitimate daughter, Arthur locked up in prison!
"Everyone has to take responsibility for their actions. Don't covet things that don't belong to you." Astrid's expression didn't change. She dropped this line and left.
Not long after Astrid left, news of her visit to Arthur reached Rolf's ears.
"I'd like to ask you to take good care of Arthur for me, help him turn over a new leaf sooner," Rolf said this with particular emphasis.
The person on the phone understood what he meant.
"Don't worry, Mr. Prescott. We specialize in reforming people. We definitely won't let Arthur waste his opportunity in prison." The other party hung up with pointed meaning.
Astrid returned home and lazily leaned back on the sofa.
When Silas came home from work, she didn't go to greet him.
The Prescott family affair had blown up big. Many people in Cypress Bay knew what had happened, and Silas was no exception.
"Should we go out to eat tonight?" He took off his coat, tossed it on the sofa, and pulled Astrid into his arms with one hand.
"Let's just eat at home. Driving out to eat is tiring. After we eat, we can watch a movie." Astrid suggested.
Seeing her being so well-behaved, Silas lifted her chin and lingered on her lips for quite a while.
"I have a friend who was a legal consultant at Starlight Gems. After the company fired him, he went to court against them to fight for my interests."
"Can you look after him for me?" Astrid looked up at him with clear, bright eyes.
"Sure." Silas pecked her lips again, and seeing she didn't want to bring up Arthur's matter, he asked, "You went to see him today?"
"Yes." Astrid didn't want to discuss this topic. She stood up and walked toward the dining room. "I'm going to see what we're having for dinner."
Silas watched her hurried retreat, his eyes gradually darkening.
