Chapter 164: The Transformation of Prescott Jewelers
Chapter 164: The Transformation of Prescott Jewelers
Without work, Astrid's body felt heavy, and she couldn't muster any energy. Every day, besides sleeping, she just locked herself in her room, going through a pile of small items she'd taken from Lillian's villa.
She hoped to find some new discoveries in the scenes she sensed from those objects.
But looking again and again, she only saw the same memories as before - loving moments between Arthur and Lillian; Marigold calling to scold Lillian, trying to stop her from marrying Arthur.
"Mr. Montgomery, you're back." A servant's voice came from downstairs, followed by the sound of Silas coming upstairs.
Astrid quickly put everything away and walked to the door, bumping right into Silas as he was about to enter the room.
"Not sleeping anymore?" Silas held her, kissed her on the cheek, and asked with concern.
"Can't sleep all day," Astrid answered, feeling a bit embarrassed.
The way they got along was becoming more and more like a real married couple.
"Do whatever you want to do." Silas held her and sat down on the sofa, looking at her delicate face, his voice deep as he said, "If you're bored, you can go shopping and buy whatever you want. I left you a card."
"I've been pretty busy lately, so I can't keep you company."
His tone sounded casual, but it gave Astrid an unreal feeling.
"Okay," Astrid answered obediently.
Silas's hand stroked her smooth hair, and the smile on his face gradually faded.
Astrid was too understanding, so understanding it made his heart ache.
The next day, Astrid woke up early. After seeing Silas off, she took out those old items again and tried once, twice, three times, until some of the items could no longer reveal any memories.
Astrid looked at the old items dejectedly, falling into confusion.
Time flew by, and a week passed.
Silas left work on time, which made Jeffrey, who was used to working overtime and traveling with him, find it hard to believe.
"Mr. Montgomery, tonight's project summary meeting?" Jeffrey chased after him to ask.
"You hold it with them. Send me the meeting summary when you're done." Silas walked away without looking back.
In the conference room.
Jeffrey relayed Silas's words truthfully. The other executives had various expressions - some surprised, some gossipy. Everyone started discussing.
"This is the seventh day in a row that Mr. Montgomery has left work on time."
"Yeah, I remember on Tuesday, he even canceled a meeting and told us all to go home early to spend time with our wives."
"I've seen Mr. Montgomery's wife. She looks gentle and kind, doesn't seem fierce at all."
"You just don't get it."
At this point, everyone in the discussion smiled knowingly.
Rumors gradually spread in the company that Silas was a henpecked husband.
The news quickly reached the R&D department.
"Did you guys hear? Mr. Montgomery is so strict at work, but at home, he's actually afraid of his wife."
"I know, I know. I heard the executives haven't worked overtime or been scolded in a long time."
Colleagues in the R&D department were chatting together, not noticing someone approaching.
"Did the company hire you to gossip!" Oliver said coldly, scaring those people into quickly dispersing.
They forgot that Oliver was also a member of the Montgomery family.
"We were talking about Mr. Montgomery, not you. Why are you getting angry!" Someone couldn't help but snap back at him.
Everyone knew that Oliver had been demoted to the R&D department. He must have offended some executive. Some people guessed it was actually Silas who transferred him there.
Oliver, mocked by the employees, grew angrier and more jealous, almost going crazy.
He returned to the lab and called Astrid. Still couldn't get through. Unwilling to give up, he sent her messages.
"Astrid, I just found out your grandfather passed away. My condolences."
"I know you were closest to your grandfather. You must be heartbroken that he died. I'm not busy with work lately, I want to come keep you company."
"I also heard about what happened with your job. Going through a double blow, you must be having a really hard time right now. Just reply to my message, and I'll come find you right away."
Astrid put away all the old items and placed them in an inconspicuous spot. She sat dejectedly on the balcony, her mind blank.
Hearing her phone ring, she picked it up and saw Oliver's messages. She pretended not to see them and calmly put the phone aside.
She didn't know how much time had passed when she fell asleep on the lounge chair. She was woken by her phone ringing and squinted at the content on the screen.
"Why didn't you cover yourself with a blanket? Be careful not to catch a cold." Silas draped a blanket over her.
Five minutes ago, he came home and saw Astrid sleeping. He went back to the bedroom to get a blanket, and just as he was about to cover her with it, the phone in Astrid's hand lit up.
He saw everything on the screen.
"Okay." Astrid made a sound in her throat and continued sleeping.
Silas didn't disturb her. He walked to the study and called Jeffrey.
"Contact Dean and tell him what Rolf is up to."
When Dean received Jeffrey's call, he was surprised at first, but the more he listened, the more his brows furrowed.
Among the three brothers, Rolf's moves were the fastest and most ruthless.
However, Dean had built up his own foundation in the company over the years. Rolf's actions had caught the attention of some people. Those who didn't support Rolf originally wanted to hold onto their shares themselves, but now they all sensed that the Prescott family was about to undergo unusual changes. Some people were starting to lose confidence in Prescott Jewelers.
This gave Dean an opportunity. He took advantage of it and bought up quite a few shares.
With Jeffrey's tip-off, knowing all of Rolf's moves, he was more confident. His voice in the company was growing stronger.
Arthur hadn't been eating or sleeping well lately, dealing with all kinds of things every day in a frazzled state.
He didn't have as many shares as Dean and Rolf, but he had just as many trivial matters to handle. He was busy until late every night before going home.
"Dad, this is chicken soup I had the servants make especially for you." Isabella held the soup bowl with both hands and handed it to Arthur.
With the major upheaval in the company, Isabella couldn't help with anything. She didn't dare make any moves at this time either, to avoid causing bigger problems.
No one said it out loud, but they all hated Astrid.
If Astrid hadn't been so stubborn back then and had transferred her shares to Isabella, their family would be the most powerful one now.
"You're still the most thoughtful." Arthur took the soup bowl from her hands and slowly began to drink.
