Chapter 114 The Bloodline Renewed

Chapter 114 The Bloodline Renewed
The eclipse reached the fortress like a held breath.

Torches guttered as the shadow slid across the twin moons, silver light thinning to a ghostly halo. Wolves throughout the valley lifted their heads, instincts thrumming, unease and reverence twined together. Even the stone beneath the fortress seemed to hum, as if the land itself recognized what was about to be born.

Ember screamed.

The sound tore from her chest as another wave of pain crashed through her, sharp and commanding. Damien tightened his grip, carrying her through the corridors with relentless purpose, ignoring the way the walls seemed to flicker with reflected firelight.

“She needs the old chamber,” one healer called out, breathless as she hurried alongside them. “The one beneath the eastern tower. The wards there are strongest.”

Damien nodded once, jaw locked. He did not slow.

Ember clutched his shoulder, breath coming in ragged gasps. Beneath the pain, the fire within her surged, hotter now, volatile, reacting to the eclipse overhead. She could feel the child pressing downward, insistent, powerful.

“Damien,” she rasped. “The fire…”

“I know,” he said fiercely. “I’m here.”

They reached the chamber just as the last sliver of moonlight vanished entirely.

Darkness fell.

Not absence but pressure.

The chamber was carved deep into the stone, walls etched with ancient runes meant to cradle power rather than contain it. As Damien laid Ember upon the prepared bed, the markings ignited faintly, glowing gold and silver, responding to her presence.

The healers moved quickly, voices low and controlled. Bowls of warm water. Clean cloth. Hands steady, practiced.

But nothing about this birth was ordinary.

Ember cried out again as her body arched, power rippling outward in a visible wave. The flames in the braziers flared, then steadied, bending toward her as if drawn by gravity.

Damien staggered a step back as the bond surged violently.

He pressed a hand to his chest, breath hitching.

Too much, he thought and then rejected the fear.

He crossed back to her side immediately, taking her hand, grounding her with everything he was. Alpha. Mate. Anchor.

“Look at me,” he said urgently. “Ember, look at me.”

She forced her eyes open, locking onto his face. The pain did not vanish, but it focused. The chaos sharpened into purpose.

“I won’t break,” she whispered. “I won’t.”

“I know,” Damien replied, voice thick. “You’re stronger than the fire.”

Another contraction slammed through her, fierce enough to draw a scream that echoed off the stone. The runes blazed brighter, the chamber vibrating as if struck by a distant drum.

Outside, wolves howled, long, reverent cries that rolled across the valley like a tide.

The healers exchanged tense glances.

“The child is… bright,” one murmured. “Brighter than any I’ve felt.”

“Focus,” the lead healer snapped gently. “She needs you with her.”

Ember’s hands trembled, slick with sweat, as she bore down again. The fire within her surged outward, uncontrolled, licking at the edges of the chamber.

“Ember,” Damien said urgently, pressing his forehead to hers. “Breathe with me. Not against it. With it.”

She nodded weakly, drawing on the bond, on his steady presence. Slowly, she shifted, not resisting the fire, but guidingit. The flames receded slightly, coiling inward, focused.

The pain changed.

Sharpened.

Purposeful.

“It’s time,” the healer said.

Ember screamed again, body straining, every nerve alight. Damien held her through it, murmuring her name, grounding her as the child descended.

Then, a sudden blinding flare of light.

The chamber filled with fire and moonlight both, the runes flaring white-hot. The air thickened, heavy with power, as if the world itself leaned closer to witness.

Ember cried out, one final, ragged sound and then there was a rush of movement, of release.

The healer caught the child.

For a heartbeat, everything froze.

No cry.

No sound at all.

The eclipse deepened outside, total and absolute.

Ember sagged back against the pillows, chest heaving. “Damien,” she whispered, terror creeping into her voice. “Why isn’t…”

The healer stared down at the child in her arms, eyes wide, not with fear, but awe.

“The fire,” she breathed. “It’s… contained.”

Damien stepped closer, heart pounding, fear clawing at his chest. “What does that mean?”

Before the healer could answer, the chamber shuddered violently.

The runes flared again, then cracked.

A shockwave rippled outward from the child, invisible but immense. Damien was thrown backward, crashing into the far wall as power exploded through the room.

Outside the fortress, the ground trembled.

Ember screamed, reaching for the child as the fire surged again, wild, furious and answering something far beyond the walls.

The eclipse overhead pulsed, shadow deepening unnaturally.

The healer clutched the child tighter, shouting over the roar. “Alpha, something is responding!”

Damien dragged himself to his feet, blood at his lip, eyes blazing. He forced his way back to Ember’s side just as the child’s skin began to glow faintly, veins lit with molten gold beneath soft newborn flesh.

Ember reached out, fingers brushing her child’s cheek.

“Please,” she whispered. “You’re safe. You’re loved.”

The fire hesitated.

For one fragile moment, it stilled.

Then the child’s chest expanded.

The breath drew deep.

And as the eclipse held the world in darkness, the newborn’s lips parted, on the edge of a sound powerful enough to change everything.
