Chapter 38
Eric was in so much pain that each breath he drew became more and more agonizing with every passing second. Those mean bastards had left him alone in the dark, still tied to the chair for hours with an open bullet wound where their leader had shot him in the thigh.
He was so thirsty, hungry, and exhausted that he kept drifting in and out of sleep, dreaming about his family and Aubrey. Eric couldn’t believe how much he missed her. He no longer cared that she was yo-yo-ing between him and her high school flame who had popped up out of thin air to ruin his chances of having a real relationship with her, all he cared about now was being with her and nothing else. He couldn’t have ever imagined that when he eventually found his mate, he would have to share her with a full human who he didn’t believe was even worthy of her attention. Eric wondered if he would have felt this offended if his rival had been a fellow werewolf.
Well, none of that mattered anymore. He missed her and he wanted to break free from this shitty place and return to her. He was done playing it cool with these lunatics who captured him like a wild animal and tied him up to be tortured until he gave up the identity of the leader of his clan. He would sooner die than let these bastards lay a hand on Gary for whatever purpose they may have in mind.
Humans weren’t supposed to know about them, and the way this bunch was going about it made him know for sure that they were up to no good. Determined to break himself out of this damned cell, Eric willed himself to change form and within seconds, the zip ties binding him broke off like dried chips. Eric landed on his legs as a giant honey-brown wolf. His sharp wolf eyes pinpointed the exit door in the dark and he ran towards it, dragging his injured leg behind him. He braced himself as he ran, ready to crash into the metal door and break the lock open.
With all of his strength, Eric dove at the door, ramming into it forcefully but he wasn’t ready for the jolt of electricity that zapped through his body, sending him several feet across the room. He landed heavily on the cold floor, shocked and disoriented for a while.
His captors hadn’t only locked him up in this dank room, but they had fortified the only exit from the room with a high voltage of electricity to see to it that he could never escape. Eric felt his morale plummet as seconds passed by. His desire to escape from this cell was slowly replaced with the feeling of hopelessness and despair. He would never see his family again or participate in the monthly family game nights that he enjoyed so much, and worst of all, he would never see his mate, Aubrey, again.
Giving in to defeat, he closed his eyes where he lay on the floor and willed himself to sleep.
