Chapter 43
Chapter 43
The clock on the wall showed just past noon when Jonathan finally closed his laptop with a soft click. Breakfast had long since been cleared away, but the quiet domesticity of it still lingered in the air. Alexandria looked better now, a soft flush had returned to her cheeks, and the dark shadows beneath her eyes had lightened considerably.
The medication was doing its work, but he could still see the lingering exhaustion in the careful way she moved, the occasional subtle wince when she turned her head too quickly. He didn’t comment on it, not yet, he needed to be patient enough to let the medications work.
He stood and offered her his hand, she took it without hesitation, her smaller fingers slid trustingly into his and he felt like they'd made progress since she was no longer trembling and crying from his presence. He led her from the bedroom into the spacious living area, where the large floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the rain-soaked garden.
Last night’s storm had left everything glistening and vibrant; the emerald grass sparkled with droplets, leaves were heavy and lush, flowers bowed under the weight of water.
He guided her to the wide, deep couch and pulled her down beside him. For a long while, they simply existed in the quiet. Jonathan opened his laptop again to handle a few pressing emails from the department, but his attention kept drifting to the girl curled against his side, she had tucked herself close, head resting on his shoulder.
She was quite peculiar, most girls her age would be tapping nonstop on their phone or watching reels and stuff, but she was just there sitting and staring blankly into space, lost in her own thoughts, or perhaps not wanting to think at all.
Nonetheless, the casual intimacy of the proximity unsettled him in a way he wasn’t accustomed to, he had never allowed anyone this close before. His thoughts drifted, as they often did in rare moments of stillness, he thought back to the life he had deliberately walked away from.
His family’s empire had been built on generations of calculation, mergers, strategic marriages that treated people like chess pieces, and efficiency that left no room for weakness. His older brother had somehow embraced it without question, becoming the perfect heir: married the right woman from the right family, produced the right grandchildren, and molded himself into exactly what their father demanded.
Jonathan had always been the outlier, he'd been the prodigal son. He had turned down the carefully arranged marriage his parents had orchestrated with the daughter of a business associate; a beautiful woman who would have strengthened alliances and expanded their influence.
He had rejected the boardroom, the legacy, the scripted future laid out for him since birth. His father had never forgiven him. Their relationship had withered into something strained and formal, reduced to occasional terse phone calls and obligatory appearances during holidays. Instead, Jonathan had carved his own path: academia, research, influence earned through intellect and discipline.
It wasn’t the empire they wanted for him, but it was his, and he had thrived. He glanced down at Alexandria, watching the way her lashes fluttered against her cheeks as she blinked every now and then, still staring ahead. She reminded him so much of himself at that age; stubborn, defiant, determined to prove she could stand on her own even if it meant breaking herself in the process.
Trying so desperately to be strong, to be untouchable. It was both frustrating and deeply, dangerously compelling. He set the laptop aside and turned toward her fully.
“Come here,” he murmured.
She blinked again and looked up at him, a flicker of awareness and heat returned to her eyes. He pulled her into his lap, guiding her to straddle him. His hands slid beneath the oversized shirt she wore, stroking slowly up the smooth, bare skin of her back. She shivered at the touch, a soft, needy sound escaped her parted lips and he loved it, he loved how responsive her body was to his touch, he loved how she looked at him like he was the only one that had the power to completely unfold her.
He took his time with her. His fingers worked the lingering knots from her shoulders and lower back in a slow, thorough massage that gradually turned her body pliant and molten against him. Her breath grew heavier, deeper, as the tension melted from her muscles. When she was fully relaxed and trembling with a different kind of tension, he slipped one hand between her thighs.
She was already wet, slick, and ready for him. Alexandria whimpered softly as he moved her panties aside and pushed two thick fingers inside her, curling them with practiced precision against that sensitive spot that made her hips jerk. His thumb found her swollen clit and circled it in slow strokes while his other hand stayed splayed across her back, holding her close and steady.
He watched her face the entire time; the way her lips parted in a silent gasp, the way her eyes fluttered shut in pleasure, the fresh bloom of color across her cheeks and chest. She came quietly, trembling in his arms as the orgasm rolled through her in deep, shuddering waves. She buried her face in his neck, muffling her soft cries against his skin.
And he held her through every pulse, murmuring low words of praise against her hair “That’s it… good girl… let go for me.”
It was a soft and gentle morning, a sharp contrast to the heated moment they usually had, and it was calming.
Afterward, she stayed curled against his chest, breathing slowly, her body was heavy with satisfaction. The rain had returned outside without warning and he was glad he stayed in today, it fell with a soft, soothing rhythm against the windows that wrapped them in what felt like a cocoon.
Jonathan continued stroking her hair in long, soothing passes, feeling something dangerously tender settle in his chest. He didn’t need to say anything, the silence between them felt… right.
And he wasn't sure where this was going but he just knew that he was addicted to her, and he didn't see himself letting go of her any time soon.
