Chapter 3 The Shrine of Monsters
SERINA POV
"You're lying to me."
Tym's voice stopped me at the door of the abandoned building where we'd hidden. I'd thought he was asleep, wrapped in the stolen blanket I'd found. I should have known better.
"I'm not—"
"Yes, you are." He sat up, his pale face sharp with anger. "You're going to that shrine tonight. Alone. You think I can't tell when you're planning something stupid?"
The blood-key burned in my pocket like it was on fire. I had ninety minutes until midnight. No time for arguments.
"Someone needs to stay here where it's safe," I said, keeping my voice steady. "If the enforcers find us together—"
"Stop treating me like I'm five!" Tym's shout echoed off the walls. He immediately started coughing, blood speckling his hand. When he could breathe again, his eyes were wet. "I know what you're doing. You're going to trade yourself for me. Make some contract that saves me but destroys you."
"Tym—"
"Mom did the same thing." His voice cracked. "She took risks to save other people. Broke Council laws to heal the sick. And then she burned, and we were alone, and I—" He wiped his eyes angrily. "I can't lose you too, Sera. I can't."
I knelt beside him, grabbing his thin shoulders. "You won't lose me. I promise. I'm coming back."
"You can't promise that."
"Watch me." I forced a smile. "I'm Serina Ashwell. I've stolen from Council merchants, outsmarted enforcers, and kept us alive for five years in the worst part of the city. Some old shrine isn't going to kill me."
Tym searched my face, looking for the lie. Finally, he whispered, "What if your vision was right? What if you wake up something terrible?"
"Then I'll deal with it." I pulled him into a hug, memorizing the feel of his heartbeat against mine. "Whatever happens in that shrine, I'm bringing back the power to save you. That's all that matters."
I left before he could argue more. Before I could change my mind.
The Old Quarter was called "old" because the Council had abandoned it fifty years ago after a magical accident killed everyone who lived there. Now it was just ruins and ghosts—or so people said. I didn't believe in ghosts.
I was about to find out if I was wrong.
I'd stolen supplies on the way—a knife, flint for fire, bandages in case I got hurt. Useless things, probably. What could a knife do against something ancient and powerful enough to be locked away for a thousand years?
The fountain sat in what used to be a plaza, its stone cracked and dry. No water had flowed here in decades. The statue at its center showed a woman with wings, her face worn away by time. Something about her empty eyes made my skin crawl.
Eleven fifty-seven. Three minutes until midnight.
I circled the fountain until I found what Nyx described—a gap between stones, barely visible. My hands shook as I pulled out the blood-key vial. The liquid inside looked black in the moonlight.
"Just a drop," Nyx had said. "More than that, and the shrine will think you're offering yourself as sacrifice instead of supplicant."
I uncorked the vial. The smell hit me immediately—copper and rot and something else, something that made my brain scream wrong, wrong, wrong.
One drop. I could do this.
The liquid touched the stone. For a heartbeat, nothing happened. Then the fountain shuddered. Stone ground against stone with a sound like screaming. The center of the plaza split open, revealing stairs descending into absolute darkness.
Midnight. The shrine was open.
I had one hour.
I lit my stolen torch and started down. The stairs seemed endless, spiraling deeper and deeper into the earth. The walls pressed close on both sides, covered in carvings that my torchlight revealed in flashes.
Dragons. Hundreds of them.
But not the noble, wise dragons from children's stories. These dragons were monsters—tearing humans apart, burning cities, devouring whole armies. And the humans in the carvings were fighting back, stealing something bright and golden from the dragons' chests.
Their hearts? Their magic?
The stairs ended at a massive door covered in chains. More carvings covered its surface, but these showed something different—a single dragon, larger than the others, wrapped in so many chains I could barely see its shape. Words were carved above it in a language I couldn't read.
But somehow, I understood them anyway.
Here lies the World-End Dragon, betrayed and bound. Wake him and doom follows. Leave him and live.
My torch flickered. Fifty minutes left.
I pressed my palm against the door. It swung open silently, revealing a chamber so large my torchlight couldn't reach the far walls. Pillars held up a ceiling I couldn't see. The floor was made of black stone that reflected my light like water.
And at the center of it all stood an altar.
I walked toward it, my footsteps echoing. The altar was simple—just a flat stone with grooves carved into its surface. Old dark stains marked the grooves. Blood stains.
A whisper drifted through the chamber. Not words exactly, but a feeling—ancient, hungry, aware.
Something was watching me.
"Hello?" My voice sounded tiny in the vast space. "I'm here to make a contract. I need power to save my brother."
The whisper grew louder. The temperature dropped so fast I could see my breath.
Then I noticed the chains.
They hung from the darkness above, massive links of black metal thicker than my body. They all led down to the far side of the chamber where the shadows were deepest.
Where something waited.
"A contract requires a sacrifice," a voice said from everywhere and nowhere. It sounded like stone grinding, like winter wind, like the moment before death. "What do you offer, little human?"
My knife felt pathetic in my hand. But I'd come this far.
"I offer my greatest fear," I said, repeating what Nyx told me. "I offer my nothingness. Take my insignificance and give me the power to matter. To save my brother. To—"
"Your nothingness?" The voice almost sounded amused. "You think you're nothing?"
"I know I am." The words came out bitter. "I'm a street rat. A thief. Nobody sees people like me except when they want someone to kill or blame. I'm invisible. Worthless. Nothing."
"Interesting." The chains rattled, just slightly. "And if I gave you power, what would you do with it?"
"Save Tym. That's all. Just let my brother live."
"Nothing more? No revenge? No desire to burn the ones who hurt you?"
I thought about the enforcers who killed Mom. The Council who marked Tym for death. The system that made people like us disposable.
"If you're offering," I said quietly, "I wouldn't say no."
The laugh that echoed through the chamber was terrible—full of rage and pain and dark satisfaction.
"Oh, little nothing. You're perfect."
The chains shattered.
Something moved in the darkness—huge, ancient, powerful. Eyes opened, glowing like molten gold. Wings unfurled, each one large enough to block out the sky.
The World-End Dragon was awake.
And he was looking directly at me.
"Come here, child," he commanded, his voice shaking the stones beneath my feet. "Let me see the face of the weapon who will burn civilization to ash."
I couldn't move. Couldn't breathe. This was wrong. I was supposed to make a contract, get power, leave. Not wake up something that the carvings called World-Ender.
The dragon stepped into my torchlight.
He was beautiful.
And I was dead.
