Chapter 13 In the Shadow of Choice
Chapter 13 In the Shadow of Choice
Sera's POV
I wake to sunlight streaming through familiar windows, and for once, there's no disorientation. I know exactly where I am. I'm in Kade's bed. In Kade's room. In Kade's quarters, which are becoming my quarters too.
Kade is already awake, propped up on an elbow, watching me with an intensity that makes my breath catch.
"Good morning," he says softly, a smile displayed on his lips
"Hi," I say with a blush, suddenly very aware that I'm wearing only his shirt and that he's shirtless beside me.
"How are you feeling?" he asks. "After yesterday?"
"Like I made a huge decision," I say. "But not like I regret it."
He smiles and reaches out, his fingers tracing the mark on my shoulder. The touch sends electricity through my skin.
"It's beautiful," he says. "You're beautiful."
I want to tell him that I'm ready. That I've thought about it all night, and I know what I want. But I'm also acutely aware that he meant what he said, he needs me to be absolutely certain. And part of me is still processing everything.
"I need to think more," I say, hating the words even as I speak them. "But not because I'm uncertain about you. Just... I need to make sure I'm ready."
Kade nods, accepting this without argument. "Whenever you are. But Sera, when you decide, come to me. Don't wait for the perfect moment. Just come."
There's a knock at the door, and Kira's voice calls through. "Rise and shine. We've got training to do."
Kade groans, and I can't help but smile.
"Go," I tell him, pushing him out of bed. "I'll get up in a minute."
By the third day of training, I've learned two important things about Northern pack training: first, they don't believe in easing people in gradually, and second, they don't believe in rest days.
Kira wakes me at dawn, and before I've even finished eating breakfast, which Kade insists on sharing with me in his quarters, a small gesture that doesn't go unnoticed by the pack, she's got me sparring with various warriors. Most are pure-bloods, and they all want to test the hybrid girl who's been marked by the alpha.
I get thrown to the ground approximately forty-seven times before noon. I count.
"You're too defensive," Kira critiques after the latest failure. "You're protecting yourself instead of attacking. That's survival instinct, but it's not how you win fights."
"If I attack, I'll hurt people," I say, breathing hard.
"Only if you can't control your power," Kira replies. "Which is why we're training you. Sera, you have strength that most of these warriors will never have. Pretending you don't have it won't protect them. Learning to use it properly will."
She's right. I know she's right. But the part of me that was raised in the Shadow Lands still believes that power is something to be ashamed of, something to hide.
"Again," Kira says.
We spar again. This time, when my opponent charges, I don't try to absorb the impact. Instead, I sidestep and use his own momentum against him. He goes flying past me and crashes into the sand.
"Better!," Kira says out loud .
By lunch, I've learned the basic blocks and counterattacks. By dinner, I'm adding movement patterns. By the time the sun sets, I can hold my own against a dedicated opponent for more than thirty seconds.
Kade appears at the edge of the training yard as we're finishing up. He watches quietly for a few minutes, then approaches. When he gets closer, I notice he's freshly showered, still slightly damp. He's wearing clothes that fit him perfectly, that make him look even more imposing than usual.
My pulse picks up just looking at him.
"How is she?" he asks Kira, though his eyes are on me.
"Fast learner," Kira says. "Better instincts than most. She's got good structure."
"Come," Kade says to me. "Walk with me."
I follow him away from the training yard, acutely aware of his presence beside me. We walk through the compound, and I notice people watching us. The mark is visible now, on display. Everyone knows what it means; that I'm Kade's intended, even if the bond isn't complete.
We end up at the edge of the compound, where the buildings give way to forest. There's a small wooden bench overlooking a clearing, and he sits, pulling me down beside him.
"How was training?" he asks.
"Exhausting," I admit. "And I think I'm going to be very sore tomorrow."
"That's normal," he says. "But you'll adapt quickly. Your body is responding well to the physical demands."
We sit in comfortable silence for a while, watching the sun paint the sky in shades of orange and pink.
"I've been thinking about what you said," I finally tell him. "About the bond."
Kade's body goes still beside me, but he doesn't turn to look at me. He's giving me space to speak.
"I don't want to rush into it," I continue. "But I also... I want to understand it better. What it means. What it would be like."
"The completed bond?" Kade asks carefully.
"Yes," I say. "I need to understand what I'd be agreeing to."
Kade turns to face me then. In the fading light, his eyes are a dark amber, intense and focused.
"A completed mate bond is the deepest connection two wolves can share," he says quietly. "Through it, you share emotions, sensations, some thoughts. You can sense each other across distances. You become attuned to each other's well-being on a fundamental level. It's not possession, you don't lose your sense of self. But you're no longer separate either. You're two people who are also part of something larger."
"Does it hurt?" I ask.
"No," he says. "Marking hurts initially like you've experienced, the bite leaves a mark that settles into permanence. But the bond itself doesn't cause pain. It causes... clarity. Connection. In some ways, it feels like finally understanding something you've been searching for your whole life."
"How long does it take? The bonding process, I mean?"
"It depends," Kade says. "Some pairs bond instantly. Some take weeks. The magic sets its own pace. But typically, the physical marking happens during the completion, and then the bond deepens naturally from there."
"And you can't undo it?" I ask.
"Not easily," Kade says honestly. "Bonds can be severed, but it's painful for both parties and leaves emotional scars. It's not something people do lightly."
I absorb that information. It's heavy. Final in a way that scares me.
"I'm not ready yet," I say. "But I wanted you to know that I'm thinking about it. That I'm considering it seriously."
"That's all I need," Kade says. He reaches out and takes my hand, and the simple contact sends electricity through my skin. "Take the time you need, Sera. This decision is too important to rush."
"Can I ask you something?" I say.
"Anything."
"Why me? Why not someone from your own pack? Someone pure-blood who doesn't come with all of my complications?"
Kade is quiet for a long moment, studying our joined hands.
Because the first time I sensed you, there was something about you that called to me," he says slowly. "Because you defied your entire family and your entire culture to choose freedom. Because you're learning to be dangerous not out of anger, but out of necessity. Because when I'm near you, everything in me goes still and focused. Because I can't imagine my life continuing without you in it."
My breath catches. "That's..."
"A lot?" he says, with a slight smile. "Yeah. But that's what the bond is. That's what choosing to complete it would mean. That I'm all in. That you're not temporary. That you're home."
I lean my head on his shoulder, and he wraps an arm around me, holding me close.
We sit like that for a long time, as the sun disappears and the stars begin to emerge. And for the first time since I left the Shadow Lands, I feel like maybe I'm exactly where I'm supposed to be.
The bond between us is still incomplete, but it's real. It's growing. And maybe that's enough for now.
