Chapter 79
AURORA.
*Three Months Later.*
Today was the last day of production. I’d spent almost half a year on this project and to see it end brought tears to my eyes. This was my life now. I was ready to put this experience in my pocket and do more screenwriting.
But first, I had to know that this movie would be a box-office hit. Everyone said the movie was great and I shouldn’t worry but how could I not? The success of a movie depended on the script. And in this movie, I was the screenwriter. If it went terribly, how could I ever show my face in the movie industry again? This was my first movie and I wanted it to be a success.
My worry weighed on me and Peter seemed to notice. He walked up to me during the final scene to stand next to me as we watched the scene together.
“I can't help but be anxious about how the film will perform. It's my first major movie and I want it to succeed,” I commented sadly, wrapping my hands around myself. “What if the numbers are terrible? I could never show my face again.”
Peter snorted, sparing me a quick glance before staring back at the wrap-up production. Somewhere along the line, we’d become great friends on set. I was positive that I wanted to work with him again. His dedication to bringing my characters to life encouraged me and after we got past the initial awkwardness, working with him became a breeze. “I understand your concerns, Aurora. Did I ever tell you the story of my first directing job? It was a disaster. At least I thought it was. every other person thought it was amazing. When the movie came out, the numbers were average at best. It didn’t deter me. I showed up at every single chance I could and now I’m one of the best directors in the industry. Cut yourself some slack. This story is brilliant, and your dedication has shone through. I believe in this project, and I believe in you.”
His words were like a soothing balm on my wound. “Thank you for your confidence, Peter. It means a lot. I just hope the audience enjoys it as much as we've enjoyed making it.”
“That's the spirit! Sometimes, it's the passion and hard work that go into a project that makes it truly remarkable. I've seen your commitment, and I'm certain that it will pay off.”
I chuckled at his enthusiasm, filled with refreshed morale. Even if it didn’t go well, I’d keep showing up until something changed. I’d never been one to give up on a challenge and I sure would not start now. I had my friends, Nathaniel and Abuela with me and there was nothing I couldn’t achieve with them by my side.
“Thank you, Peter. I appreciate it and look forward to working with you again if I ever get the chance.”

*One Year Later.*
The night before the movie’s premiere, my anxiety was through the roof. I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness and my body shook so hard I couldn’t sit still. I wanted to be with Nathaniel tonight but I had to get up early for my makeup and styling. So, I grabbed my phone to call him instead. He picked on the second ring.
“Hey, Nathaniel.” I was grinning as wide as a Chester cat. “I wanted to come see you tonight but I can’t. I have to wake up really early for my makeup. How are you?”
I could hear the smile in his voice. “I’m great. And I wanted to see you too but I’m out of the country on a business trip. It’s a bit last minute and I couldn’t change my schedule. I’m sorry.”
I sighed heavily. I guess this was the life of dating a businessman, the sudden trips, and instant disappearances. If being his assistant had taught me anything, it was that these things happened. “Well, will you be home in time for the premiere tomorrow?”
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world, baby,” he said in his deep voice. “I’ll be there.”
Giggling at his pet name for me, I nodded. “Alright then. Take care. Come home safe.”
“Goodnight, Aurora.”

NATHANIEL.
Thane had told Aurora he was on a business trip, but in reality, he was in another country on a special mission. It occurred to him recently that he had not formally proposed to Aurora. Their marriage had been a sham, a means to an end and even though it had taken an unexpected turn, he still wanted to do right by her.
Falling in love with her had been easy. It had been unexpected, almost like falling down the stairs, tumbling and tumbling until he landed on the ground, oddly aware that he’d ended up exactly when he wanted to go.
This was his only chance to get it right. Everything, his mother knowing Aurora’s grandmother, Consuela, arranging a transactional marriage between them, he and Aurora getting married, her showing up at his office as his personal assistant, him finding out that she was his wife after they’d already signed divorce papers, everything had led them to this moment. This one moment that would mark the beginning of their life together.
If she accepted him, that was. He was taking a bold step, proposing to her in the middle of her movie premiere. His reputation and name stood at stake, all of which he would gladly trade for her.
This woman that had completely turned his life upside down. This woman that he loved.
In a small, dimly lit room of an elegant jewelry store, Thane engaged in a conversation with the experienced ring dealer. He wanted a ring that was as unique and remarkable and spoke loud enough as his love for Aurora. He would not spare any expense.
Thane’s eyes roamed the glass compartment that housed rings of all sizes and prices. The ring dealer behind the compartment smiled at him. "What are you looking for today, sir?"
“I'm looking for something truly special, a ring that will leave her in awe.”
The ring dealer nodded. “Of course, sir. We have a selection of exquisite pieces. What style are you thinking of?”
“Something elegant and timeless but with a unique touch,” he said, his eyes resting on a particular diamond ring that seemed to call out to him. “What about that one?” he pointed a finger to the ring.
The ring dealer smiled widely. “This is an exquisite diamond ring with a rare, uniquely cut diamond. The design is simple yet captivating. It's a one-of-a-kind piece. Would you like me to show it to you?”
Thane was stunned at how the ring glowed in the dim light. Aurora would love this. “Yes, please.”
The ring dealer carefully presented the ring to Thane. Its brilliance and distinct cut caught his eye, and he knew it was the one. It was mighty expensive, but then again, no good thing came easily. His coffers were certainly large enough to carry the weight of the expense. He felt a quick rush of excitement at the thought of proposing to her with such a state-of-the-art ring and as they finalized the purchase, Thane knew there was no going back.
He was going to propose to Aurora and marry her properly this time, and he would make sure he did it right.
