A Blast From The Past
A Blast From The Past
The ringing in Julian's ears was the first thing he noticed. Then came the smell of smoke and the pressing weight on his chest. He gasped, pushing the debris off him, and blinked against the hazy light.
"Liam!" Julian yelled, jumping to his feet. He scanned the chaotic scene, his heart pounding. Where was Liam? Was he safe?
"I'm here," Liam's voice called out, shaky but there. Julian spotted him a few feet away, helping a sootcovered worker to his feet. Relief washed over Julian. At least Liam was okay.
But as Julian looked around, he saw another figure lying still amidst the rubble. Daniel.
"Daniel!" Julian shouted, running towards him. He knelt beside Daniel, looking for a pulse. It was weak, but there.
"Daniel, wake up!" Julian pleaded, shaking him softly. Daniel groaned, his eyes fluttering open.
"Julian?" he mumbled, his voice weak. "What happened?"
"There was an explosion," Julian explained, trying to keep his voice steady. "But you're going to be okay. I'm going to get you out of here."
He carefully lifted Daniel into his arms, straining against the weight. As he carried Daniel away from the burning building, he saw the look in Daniel's eyes. It wasn't confusion or pain. It was something else. Something he hadn't seen in a long time. Love.
Julian averted his look, a knot forming in his stomach. He knew Daniel had always had feelings for him. But he had hoped, for Daniel's sake, that they had faded over time.
He carried Daniel to a safe distance and laid him down gently. Paramedics ran over, taking over Daniel's care. Julian watched them work, feeling a mix of guilt and thankfulness. Daniel had saved him from his father's gun.
Liam came to stand beside him, his hand resting on Julian's arm. "Are you okay?" he asked, his eyes full of worry.
Julian nodded, but he knew he wasn't okay. Not really. His father had tried to kill him. Daniel had saved him. And now, Daniel's feelings were back, stronger than ever.
"I need to talk to Daniel," Julian said, his voice low.
Liam frowned. "Are you sure that's a good idea? He needs to rest."
"I know, but I can't avoid this any longer," Julian said. "It's not fair to him, or to you."
Liam sighed, but nodded in understanding. "I'll be here," he said, squeezing Julian's arm.
Julian walked over to where Daniel was lying, his heart racing. He knelt beside him, taking his hand.
"Daniel," Julian said softly. "Thank you. You saved my life."
Daniel looked at him, his eyes filled with feeling. "I couldn't let anything happen to you," he whispered.
"I know," Julian said. "And I appreciate it. But I need to be honest with you. About us."
Daniel's face turned guarded. "What do you mean?"
"I know you have feelings for me," Julian said, his voice gentle. "And I'm so sorry, but I can't repay them. I love Liam."
Daniel's eyes filled with tears. "I know," he said, his voice cracking. "I've always known. But I couldn't help hope that maybe, someday…"
"I'm so sorry," Julian continued, squeezing his hand. "You're my best friend, Daniel. I value you more than anything. But I can't give you what you want."
Daniel nodded, wiping away his tears. "I understand," he said. "It's just… hard."
"I know it is," Julian said. "And I'm here for you. Always. As a friend."
They sat in silence for a few minutes, Daniel's hand clasped in Julian's. Finally, Daniel spoke.
"You really love him, don't you?" he asked, his voice soft.
Julian smiled. "More than anything," he said. "He's my soulmate."
Daniel nodded again. "Then I'm happy for you," he said, faking a smile. "Even if it hurts."
Julian squeezed his hand tighter. "Thank you, Daniel," he said. "You're a true friend."
Just then, a police officer approached them. "Mr. Blackwood," he said. "We need to ask you some questions about the fire."
Julian sighed. He had almost forgotten about the confusion around him. "Of course," he said.
He stood up, turning to Daniel. "I'll come back later," he said. "Get some rest."
Daniel nodded, his eyes filled with understanding. Julian walked away, following the police officer.
As he answered their questions, his mind raced. Who had set the fire? Was it Victoria? Or was it someone else, someone even more dangerous?
And what was he going to do about his father? He couldn't believe that the man he had admired his whole life had tried to kill him.
He knew he had to find out the truth. He had to uncover his father's secrets, no matter how painful they might be.
Later that night, after the fire was extinguished and the hurt were taken care of, Julian returned to his penthouse. Liam was waiting for him, his face marked with worry.
"What did the police say?" Liam asked.
"They don't know who did it yet," Julian said. "But they're investigating."
"And Daniel?" Liam asked. "How is he?"
"He's going to be okay," Julian said. "We talked. I told him how I felt. It was hard, but it needed to be done."
Liam nodded, his eyes full of understanding. "I'm proud of you," he said. "That couldn't have been easy."
Julian smiled, taking Liam's hand. "It wasn't," he said. "But it was worth it. I needed to be honest with him, and with myself."
They stood in silence for a moment, their hands clasped tightly. Julian knew that they had a long road ahead of them. But as long as they had each other, they could face anything.
Suddenly, the lights flickered and died. The penthouse fell into darkness.
"What was that?" Liam asked, his voice tense.
Julian frowned. "I don't know," he said. "Maybe it's just a power outage."
But as he said the words, he felt a cold hand clamp over his mouth. He fought against his attacker, but they were too strong.
"Don't make a sound," a voice whispered in his ear. "Or your little Omega gets it."
Julian's blood ran cold. He knew that sound. It was Victoria Kane.
He felt a sharp pain in his arm, and then everything went black.
Liam gasped as Julian slumped to the ground, unconscious. He whirled around, looking for the attacker.
"Victoria!" he yelled, his eyes glowing with power. "Show yourself!"
Victoria stepped out of the darkness, a wicked smile on her face. She was holding a knife, stained with Julian's blood.
"Hello, Liam," she said, her words dripping with malice. "I'm afraid your little Alpha is out of the picture. But don't worry, I have plans for you too."
Before Liam could respond, Victoria lunged at him, her dagger raised high.
Liam prepared to defend himself, his magic rising. But then, he felt a sharp pain in his back. He gasped, stumbling forward.
He looked down and saw a second knife sticking out of his back. He turned his head and saw Senator Blackwood standing behind him, a cold, emotionless look on his face.
"Sorry, Liam," Senator Blackwood said, his voice devoid of feeling. "But you know too much. And I can't let you ruin my plans."
Liam's world began to spin. He couldn't believe it. Senator Blackwood had betrayed him too.
As he fell to the ground, his vision blurring, he saw Victoria and Senator Blackwood standing over him, their faces twisted with hate.
"Goodbye, Liam," Victoria said, her voice filled with victory. "It's been fun."
