Chapter 92 Prioritize what we have
Chapter 92 Prioritize what we have
By now, Evyths and Valerio were seated on the available soft cushion, the weight that air carried finally started to fade the moment Valerio helped her up.
Regardless of the anger, the outburst, the disappointment, she was the one he loved — the mother of his children. His queen.
While she leaned slightly on his shoulder, Valerio's fingers trailed unfathomable shapes on her arm. His feathery touch sent shivers across her body.
Even if it had been days, it still felt like they had been centuries apart. Also noticing the flakiness around her wrist, a part of Valerio relaxed.
Why? It only showed that she missed him just as he did.
And Adler really meant nothing to her.
“I do not have secrets, Valerio.” Her calm voice softly interrupted the silence.
“You had,”
“Well, not anymore.” She assured. “Believe me, my heart ached for days. It was heavy to carry and I truly wished I had told you sooner…”
Valerio's looked away. It was obvious that it hurt him, especially because they were his children.
“I wished you did. I did not have to find out through the flames…”
Evyths lifted her head immediately, her gaze narrowing. “Flames? How is that?”
“The ring,” his eyes gestured to her finger and back to her. “It lets me feel what you feel.” He said and when she attempted to speak, Valerio continued. “I know, I did not have to spy without your consent but… I would do anything to make sure that you are and our children are safe.”
Evyths huffed, crossing her arms. No, she didn't think that the ring meant something aside from the symbol of their affection. No wonder it glowed and overheated at some point.
“It explains the excess heat then,” she coldly said
“Yes but that wasn't me, it was you. The moment I felt the shift, I assumed that you were under some sort of… duress.” His voice turned serious, demanding an explanation with his look. “What triggered you?”
Her lips pursed, looking away slowly. If she tells him, it would only she things worse and yet she couldn't afford another lie not after what had happened earlier. “I got into an argument with the King's beta and everything changed when he… insulted me. I did not know how to control myself or the anger I felt.” She turned to him fully, her face dropping. “Valerio, I hurt him almost death. As we speak, Oakley Bo is in a critical condition,”
Valerio smiled halfway, the complete opposite of what she had expected.
Her eyes rolled. “Are you being serious, my king?”
“What?!” He shrugged. “I mean, the cunt deserved more than the state that you put him in.”
Evyths' hand flew over to her forehead. How soon she forgot how impressed he used to be whenever she hunted or killed.
“And you are not helping, Valerio…”
“If you insist then… I'll pretend to be sad. But I can't spare sympathy to anyone who tries to disrespect you, Evyths,” he whispered as he leaned forward tucking the strands of her auburn red behind her ear. The frame of her oval face accentuated even better when the warm light softly reflected. “You should know that by now.” He added.
A small smile touched her lips, her amorous holding his gaze.
“It does not change the perceptions about me. I should appear gentle to them…”
“Perhaps a little bit difficult so that they would not cross the boundaries.” He replied with certainty in his voice. “Sometimes, a leader needs to show an example of the extent he can go otherwise, the followers would trade his generosity for familiarity. And that leads to disrespect. You should not belittle yourself because you are gentle, my love…”
His words sank in deeply. One of the things that Valerio possessed was wisdom. He was a leader and he understood what it meant.
Evyths touched his face, tracing his cheek bone with her thumb like she needed a reminder of what his skin felt like.
Sleek and pale.
Evyths leaned closer, her warm breath caressing his face as her lips captures his. Gentle. Soft. Sweet. Yearning.
And when they pulled away, Valerio tenderly held either sides of her face, stealing another deep kiss that could eventually make them toss their clothes had Evyths not pulled away.
Valerio's shoulders dropped disappointedly. “I am starving with need, Evyths…”
She chuckled. “Not right here. And, you have yet to tell me how you got in there without a single moment of chaos.” Her hands traced embellishment on his cloak.
“You do not want to know, you'll not approve of it. Moreover, I was more concerned about you when I arrived until I saw you in… that dog's room…”
Evyths hit him playfully. “That is vulgar! You can't insult my kind while I am here…”.
Valerio smiled uninterested. “I absolutely do not give a rancid fuck, your majesty…”
Evyths cracker up before she could contain it while he admired her. He missed it, everything. Her voice. He laughs. Her pouts. Her funny frown. The feel of her warm skin over his. Just everything and only if he could convince her to come with him. He thought.
Evyths held her chest dramatically. “I swear to you, darling, I would never defile what we share. You have my heart…” she stated calmly, her voice soft. “My soul maybe…”
Valerio's hands traced her thigh over her dress, bucking her closer. “I know.” He assured. “I was more concerned about your reputation and that cunt could take advantage of the situation…”
Evyths squinted briefly. “Oh Valerio, too jealous.”
“Oh, I saw it in his eyes. He wants you…”
Evyths scoffed lightly. “Impossible.”
Valerio's brow tilted. “Why? You think you are undersirable? Unattractive? How do you think I'm madly in love you?” His thumb hovered over her lips. “You are irresistible. Every specie in their right minds know that you are different.”
Evyths' cheeks turned pink, flipping her hair behind and she positioned her legs over his thighs. Valerio gently rubbed her feet as she sighed with relief.
He watched her carefully. She wanted more of it and only if she would let him take proper care of her, it would've been way better than living in Davendale, not under his watch.
Evyths rested on hand, leaning on thc cushion’s headrest. “The reason I was in Adler's room was because I wanted to find out something really important—”
“It should not be in his chambers, Eva,” Valerio cut in firmly.
“I know, Valerio. I admit I was wrong and I realized that a little too late. But I saw something earlier.” She began seriously as Valerio adjusted curiosly, still massage her legs carefully. He noticed how swollen they had become, given that the rapid changes in her pregnancy demanded a closer attention. At least, it was what his mother told him.
“Did you write to Alpha Leon recently?” Her brows arched questionably.
Valerio paused mid-rub, blinking. “Write to Leon?” He reiterated.
She nodded eagerly but Valerio's expression said otherwise. “You did not?”
“I did not. I would have informed you sooner or written to you instead.” He clarified.
For a split second, the atmosphere fell silent. Valerio could hear the gentle beat of Evyths' heart. Even the torches in the corners burned steadily, the flames almost unflickering.
“This is… confusing. I saw your seal on the missive. Fresh wax. When he noticed that I had been looking at it, he simply hid it away. That was why I met Adler, I wanted him to break in and find the letter…”
Valerio stopped, his expression vacant but it meant something to Evyths. It wasn't void.
“Adler is helping me navigate the goddess's call and he's been filling me in about the kingdom, with Leon's permission of course.” She said before Valerio could speak, his jaw clenching with unspoken words. “Tell me, if you did not write the letter then who would have?”
That moment, she expected Valerio immediate answer but Valerio instantly looked away, a subtle frown on his face which hinted at one thing; danger.
