Chapter 102 Welcome, Raven.
Chapter 102 Welcome, Raven.
Some hours later…
Evyths sat in the living room where the king preferred to host his guests. Her back straight, her chin up – staring into the distance, her thoughts lined up before her.
Just like every other cozy night in Davendale, this one felt different. It couldn't be the cold breeze wafting through the window or the shrewd clouds hanging threateningly in the sky like it bore the kingdom's fate.
What exactly was it?
She had come to Davendale to guide the Kingdom, but somehow, it seemed like every question she asked had an underlying danger underneath.
“What am I doing, goddess?” Her voice trembled.
Not only was Raven tearing both kingdoms, she was after her child—now children.
Her. All over again.
She exhaled deeply, her hand on her belly. If only Valerio was there with her, he could have known how to calm her storm. He knew the right words at the right time.
Finally, the door opened. Her thoughts to a halt.
She rose instantly when King Leon walked in. Her eyes fell on his frame, she had instantly noticed something.
No royal cloak, no sword, no crown. Just a shirt, black pants, and boots.
Evyths remained poised, the rancid smell of alcohol seethed in the air.
“Yo-your majesty,” she bent.
The king looked slightly behind his shoulders. The soldiers dismissed, he didn't need to.
Bringing back his gaze to her, he stared from top to bottom then top again.
“Do you have any regrets, Evyths?”
Her brows squeezed, it was the least question that she expected from him
She shook her head. “King Leon, I di-didn’t want to—”
“You did.” His voice sharpened. His hands clasped behind, the strands of his grey hair draped the sides of his face. “I am not furious… I am only disappointed. It did not have to be you, I did not have to find out about the curse through you.” He paused.
Evyths swallowed, sensing the tension that gradually firmed between them.
“I admit, it was not my place to do so but… I have asked your audience to apologize.” She said, “I dare not interfere between the Alpha and his Luna.”
Leon could have spoken yet he didn't. At least not immediately.
“I understand your position in Davendale. I respect what the Goddess chooses. But…”
That sound of that word lingered longer, whatever came after it wouldn't be favourable.
“I will not have you interfere with my decisions.”
Evyths blinked, her shoulders squared. “How do you mean, sure?”
He chuckled dryly. “I know that you have read the letter. I have tried to warn you…” he began circling her like a hawk, observing even the hairs on her skin. “yet you would not listen.” He stopped before her. “I am not the villain in your story, Evyths. Stay out of anything that concerns the sorcereress…”
“Stay out?” She blurted before she could stop herself. “Our kind will perish, king Leon, I have seen what the sorceress could do — we cannot fit.”
“You know nothing…”
“Spare me, but I do.” She firmly stated. “The chaos isn't a coincidence. The territorial clash, the unethical meetings with Raven and what have you, they are not coincidence.” Leon said nothing, holding her gaze even if the truth hurt even more.
“I know the sorceress, she will drink you dry until there's nothing left…”
“How ironic given that you are still breathing and pregnant.”
Evyths fists tightened on either side of her. The ticking urge to react hung by a thread.
“Your words do not terrify me. It is the rest of the pack that I fear for and you are going to lead them to their ruination. Think about the Kingdom, your wife and even your son who looks up to you—”
Within a snap, Leon grabbed her hand, pulling roughly towards him. Feeling his jagged breath while she tried to even hers.
“You dare not judge me.” He groaned, his veins snapping across his face.
No one had ever questioned him like that. No one could do that until Evyths. An omega he believed was automatically below him despite her position reminded him of the one thing that he could not outrun.
“I will warn you for the last time, Evyths. If you do not adhere to my ruling, I will make you.”
With that, he released her. She could have landed on her stomach had she not reached for the nearest table.
She held her arm, watching him leave. Although he had tried to hurt her, it did not change the things she had said.
Evyths collected herself, dusting off the invisible dust as she walked out of their leader and elders until
The soft hisses of crickets in the foliage cried unstoppably. The moon was barely round and crescent. Steaks of gray struck across it.
With each passing moment, time seemed to run faster than their solutions.
Evyths curled under a blanket by the windowsill, hearing the leaves rustle.
Earlier, Adler had told her about the estranged guests that were coming over the next day. Although they suspected that it could be Raven but that could only mean one thing; more chaos.
Adler had initially mentioned that he would go to the Meadow Hill pack and have an amicable conversation. Yet Evyths was wary. The sudden invitation did not sit right with her.
“Something is wrong.” She said to herself. “I have not gotten a response from Valerio either. What's making him so long? Has the war begun?” She continually pondered.
Darting her gaze to the empty spar ground just below her room. It reminded her of her parents while you cleaned it up. They'd always told her how special she was even if she didn't know how to spar like the wolves.
However, it made sense now. Even scarier when her fate naturally steered her into wars she wasn't prepared for. Ones that didn't need a sword to fight.
Evyths stepped down, hugging herself. Pacing.
Now that she had gathered some information about the kingdom, what really was Raven's plan for Davendale? What did she want now?
Evyths tonight deeply, searching through every memory in the back of her mind. No answers came. The goddess, again, seemed to be silent.
The thoughts gnawed at her, clutching her breath anytime she tried to exhale.
“I need to act fast. Before the king. Before Raven…” she vowed.
A soft knock made her stop in her tracks, hers on the door.
The first thing that caught her attention was that familiar yet unmistakable.
Citrus and… potions.
No, it couldn't be her. Evyths thought.
“Wh-who is there?”
There was silence but the knock persisted. Evyths stepped back, feeling her heart race.
Evyths swallowed hard.
Looking at the bottom of the door, Evyths noticed black tendrils pulsating from breath, curling into the air. The tendrils pushed towards Evyths.
Of course, she couldn't mistake that for anything. She knew it. She felt it.
Evyths' breath hitched, her belly twisting like something inside wanted to break out. The excruciating pain made Evyths squirm, reaching for the cushion behind.
Within a second, the tendrils morphed into a figure. Feminine. Regal. Yet dangerous. Like she commanded the air to bow when a smirk danced on her black painted lips.
“Very nice to finally see you, Evyths.”
