Chapter 231 History Remembers the Impossible

POV: Aphrodite

History remembers the impossible.

Kai triggers the device fully.

The activation is the completion of something that has been building since before the ruins. The device at the scale of its full capability, the Direwolf blood rune connection to the ley-lines running at the maximum the runes were built to carry, the divine resonance from the months of Eros's proximity running at the frequency the resonance was built to carry, and the mortal mortality — the energy of a finite life at the complete investment of its capacity in a specific direction at the specific moment — running at the only scale it can run at when it's running fully.

Complete.

The divine channels collapse.

Not gradually, not in the staged way of something failing incrementally. All at once, the simultaneous failure of the Moon Goddess's command architecture across every channel it was running in the mortal world. The compulsion running through the compelled wolves' lunar connections drops. The deployment commands running through the minor gods' divine function drop. The atmospheric applications of divine fire running through the ley-line network drop.

All of it.

Simultaneously.

The Moon Goddess screams.

The sound of a divine authority losing the architecture it's been running since before the pack system existed. Not pain in the physical sense. The sound of loss, of a major divine authority finding the infrastructure of its primary domain in the mortal world severed at the foundational level.

Not the Moon Goddess's existence. The severing is not of the goddess but of the authority's expression in the mortal world, the connection between the divine domain and the mortal infrastructure that the authority ran through.

Gone.

Kai's body disintegrates.

The device's full-scale activation running through the mortal mortality input at the complete investment of the finite life takes what the mortal mortality input offered when it offered itself as the device's power source. The trade of a finite life's complete investment for the device's complete activation.

Not the dramatic disintegration of something destroyed by force. The quality of something that has given everything it had in the direction it chose and in the giving there is nothing left to maintain the physical form.

Light. Ash.

Where Kai was standing there is light for the fraction of a second after the device completes its activation, and then the light disperses through the ley-lines the device connected to, and where the light was there is ash. The fine ash of something that was physical and has completed its physical expression.

I feel him go.

Not through the bond first. Through presence.

The quality that the bond runs on, the thing underneath the bond that the bond is the expression of, has been a constant in my awareness since the ruins when the bond settled into place. Constant like the baseline of the territory's ley-line hum before the curse broke, present in the way of something that is just always there and that you stop consciously registering as present because the registering is continuous.

Gone.

Where the presence was: nothing.

Then the bond.

The Kai bond going quiet is not like the Alric bond going quiet. Alric's severance carried the cold of something closing, the specific cold of a connection cut before its completion, the grief-adjacent quality of an incomplete thing ending. The Kai bond goes quiet differently, in the way of something that was completely itself and has completed, the specific quality of a thing that ran its full expression and in the running used all of it. Not the cold of an ending. The warmth of something that burned completely.

Still devastating.

Still the bond channel running empty where it had been running full.

But different.

The twins collapse.

Both of them on the ground, the howling grief filling the space and running alongside everything else in the way of grief that is too large for one expression and finds multiple expressions simultaneously. Draco and Lucen, whose twin bonds have been the most constant thing in my world since before the ruins, both on the ground with the grief running through them at the same rate it's running through me.

Eros is there.

He shields me from the backlash of the combined forces, the excess of the overloaded device and the divine conflict and the channels' collapse running through the ley-lines and the shockwave of all of it hitting the physical world at once. The gold light at its full unrestrained level taking the shockwave's physical force and redirecting it through the divine domain's architecture rather than through mine.

He can't shield me from the loss.

The silence falls across the battlefield like a physical thing. Not the managed silence of a pause in the conflict or the held-breath quality of something building. The silence of something that has just ended, running across the battlefield from the center of where Kai stood outward in every direction.

Complete.
