Chapter 904 Chapter 904
He looked at the time on the dash again. It was exactly two minutes since he’d checked the last time. Flexing his hands around the steering wheel, he focused hard on the road in front of him. It hadn’t even been two hours yet. In that time, he’d watched in the mirror more than out the windshield. He’d almost pulled over to turn around at least twenty times, and he’d had a loud discussion with his coyote about why they were driving away from their mate.
Now, his animal was doing annoying shit like sending images of Ena running or the day he’d spotted her with boots hanging from her mouth, darting across the field.
He wasn’t going to give in and go back, but he also might lose his mind. Life as a shifter had enough challenges, but not being in synch with your animal made everything harder.
His phone ringing had him hit the brake pedal. His first thought was it was Ena, and something was wrong. It was Gia’s name on the screen. He answered it.
“Hey, Zain just told us that you’re back on the road. We are too.”
“Yeah. I’m going to see if I can find the clan of those two girls from Waylon’s.”
“I hope they’re in better shape than the clan my brothers found.”
“Me too.”
“So, how’s Ena enjoying the trip? I think she hasn’t traveled a lot.”
Foster looked at the empty passenger seat. “Ena didn’t want to leave her clan with so much work to be done…”
“You left her behind? Did you hear that? He went without her.”
“I heard,” Deacon said.
Foster scowled at the phone. “If I have to stay there or move them, she’s coming then.”
“I can’t believe you left her there. Are you even mated yet? You’re marked…”
“Not yet. We’re in a good place. Getting to know each other. She has so many changes happening right now. We’re good.” They were until he drove away without her. Now, he was filled with doubts and anxiety.
“I can’t believe you left her. Just because everything was good doesn’t mean it is now. Her animal is going to be filing her head full of all the worst-case scenarios.”
“He can always call her,” Deacon suggested.
“Oh, so you could have just driven away and left me behind?”
There was a pause.
“No.”
Foster gripped the steering wheel tighter. Should he call to check on her? He should call to make sure she was okay.
“Crap. Jesse’s calling.” Gia sighed loud enough that he heard it. “Foster, go back and get her.” The line went quiet. She hung up.
“It’s only a few days.” Even though he said it out loud, there was no conviction to his words. “There’s so much work to do there. She won’t have time to even notice how long I’m gone.” He didn’t like that idea but hoped it was true.
Three seconds later, other thoughts filled his head. “What if she didn’t pause to eat and rest?” He shook his head. Orson would look out for her. Jesse and Leah were there; they’d keep an eye on her, too.
Wouldn’t they? Yeah, they would. Ena was fine. He’d call her when he reached South Dakota and check in with her. It was fine. She was good. He was a mess, but she was good.
