Chapter 845 Chapter 845
There had been so few moments that Oryn had seen the kids smile that she thought she must be dreaming it. Even Mila, who hadn’t done more than lie in her arms for a few weeks was now sitting on the table where Wyatt had put her after she changed into her new clothes. She was smiling and even though talking made her cough, she was talking to the doll that had been in her backpack.
For the last year, they hardly spoke above a whisper, but now they were all talking at once. They were being children, and none of it would have happened without Uri. He could have gone on his way to do his job after she hauled him out of the bay, but he hadn’t. He didn’t know her, but he had still helped her.
Oryn sat on the edge of the table and looked over where he was making breakfast. She’d be lying if she said the aroma of that bacon cooking wasn’t making her stomach remind her how hungry she was.
Ben was standing with her, and she wasn’t sure what they were talking about, but Ben had smiled—twice.
“Oryn. Oryn.”
She turned to see Tony holding up his robot toy.
“Watch.”
She watched him move the pieces and turn the truck into a car. His eyes were filled with excitement, and his smile was infectious. She had no choice but to smile back at him.
Ben laughed, and Oryn turned to see Uri chuckling. She watched Uri touch Ben’s shoulder, and his expression didn’t sober at all. With a nod, Ben started walking toward the door. He paused in front of her. “I’m just going to do a quick check before we eat.”
She could still see the grief in his eyes, but for a short moment, it had been less. She could only nod. If she dared speak right now, the words wouldn’t come because her heart felt like it was stuck in her throat.
“They didn’t send dishes.”
Uri was beside her.
“Oh.” She quickly stood up. “There's some under the counter. I’ll wipe them off.”
“Perfect.” He nodded and went back over to the little stove.
He looked at ease, standing there cooking. She went over and grabbed a stack of plates. He was so good with the kids she had to wonder if he spent a lot of time with his clan when he wasn’t working.
“Oryn.”
She turned to look at Charlotte.
“I want to eat.” She was hugging the doll with one hand, and her other was over her stomach.
“We’ll take it slow and see how your tummy feels about it.”
Charlotte smiled. “Okay. The juice was good. Can I have more?”
Oryn wanted to tell her she could have anything she wanted, but knew that was a lie. All these children had wanted since this began was answers and their family's back. “You can have more juice.” She smiled.
“Okay.” Charlotte turned and went over and sat on the bench of the table Mila was lying on.
It was going to be hard to watch them leave, but it was only going to be for a short while. Then, she would reunite with them and be able to tell them that the men who had made them orphans would never hurt anyone again.
