Chapter 840 Chapter 840
Bringing up Esen’s number, Uri checked the door before hitting send. Oryn was inside telling the kids about leaving. He didn’t know what to expect as far as the kid’s reactions. If it were him, he’d be happy about being warm, clean, and fed, but sometimes change was a scary thing.
Hitting send, he walked away from the building.
“Uri?”
“Esen, hi.” He’d never been formal with her since she became the alpha. He’d seen her have to be firm and be alpha, but they were around the same age, so it felt strange. Of course, in person, he bowed his head as was expected.
“Is everything all right? We don’t usually hear from you until you’re back on our land.”
He shrugged. Keeping in touch wasn’t one of his strengths. “I’m good.” It was starting to get dark, and he’d just noticed. “I’ve come across some children of our kind…”
“Just children? Where are their parents?”
“The clan was killed. Some of the teens hid the rest of the kids.” He knew that she needed as much detail as possible, but other than what Oryn had told him, he didn’t have a lot of details.
“When did all of this happen? Are they all right?”
“Where are you? Geographically.”
Normally, he wouldn’t share information, but there was nothing normal about this situation. “B.C.”
“There’s no clan of ours there. There used to be one in Alberta a long time ago. My grandfather moved them here, or I thought he had.”
He wanted to ask if that was where his clan had been, but to this day, he’d never used his contacts in the Alliance to get information. As far as he was concerned, his family had left him behind so they could stay wherever they were. “I don’t have a lot of details right now. One of the women survived the attack and has been looking after them.”
“She hasn’t reached out to anyone in that time?”
He remembered Oryn’s original opinion of the Alliance. “I don’t think she knew who to get in touch with.”
There was a long pause.
“How many? What is their health like? I’m assuming they’ve lived in hiding, so that can take a toll.”
“Eight. A few are siblings, but I think they’re going to want to stay close together.”
“Of course. We can put them in one of the guest buildings.” She sighed. “They’re not used anymore.”
He wondered if they ever would be again. Clan gatherings had been few and far between since he’d been alive. “That would work.”
“Are you coming back with them?”
“Not right now. I was sent here for something else.” He turned to he could watch the door. “Three of the kids are in need of medical assistance, so Shaelan Black is going to be traveling with them.”
“I’ve spoken to Shaelan before. Is it serious?”
“I’m not sure.”
“And the other five?”
“They probably need some rest and good food for a while.”
“Understandable. How old are they?”
“The oldest is around sixteen. The youngest just turned five.” He knew he didn’t have to say it to her, but he wanted to. “They’re good kids, Esen. The oldest keep watch and look after the youngest.”
“I’m sure what they’ve been through has made them that way so they survived.”
She wasn’t wrong. “I’ll tell Calum to get in touch with you and update you on their condition and progress.”
“Yes. Tell—what’s the woman’s name?”
“Oryn.”
“Tell Oryn I look forward to meeting her.”
He looked at the door again. His gut told him Oryn probably wasn’t going with them right away. There was a reason she traveled to where Kenric was, and he knew when vengeance drove a person, it was hard to give it up. “I will.” He would leave it open, just in case he managed to get her to go with them.
“You take care of yourself, Uri. Andi gives us updates, so we all know what the Alliance has been doing lately, and we’re all very proud that some of ours is helping.”
Since they’d taken him in, he’d been one of theirs. He nodded because he didn’t know what to say. “I’ll touch base once the kids are there.”
“We’ll look after them.”
“I know.” He hung up with a goodbye. It was probably rude, but Esen knew him well enough that she wouldn’t be surprised.
He really wanted to go for a quick flight and check the area. He wondered how close Kenric’s was to here. Did she go and watch him? Surely, she hadn’t planned anything action-wise against him. He looked at the building. No, she wouldn’t have taken a chance and left the kids alone. That much he knew. What he was questioning now was once they were headed to his clan, would she still be cautious with any action she took?
