Chapter 749 Chapter 749
Zain glanced over at Oaklyn again. She still had an amazed look on her face. He figured Eaton shocked people more often than not. She was on the Special Operations team and was unlike the other large members of the team. He doubted Eaton even reached five feet in height. She was tiny and petite, and her features were delicate. She had pure white hair that she wore short and spiked all over her head. When she spoke, you had to lean in just to hear her. The first time she’d come into his office with Kenzo, he thought she was just a visitor.
“I’m sorry if I keep lookin’ at you with my gob hangin’ open, but I’m both surprised and delighted that you are a member of one of the Alliance teams.” Oaklyn adjusted her wig and smiled at Eaton.
Bear snorted. “Not just a team, but the scariest team we have.”
Eaton chuckled softly. “I find it’s easier to do my job when people underestimate me.”
Oaklyn nodded her head slowly. “It is handy.”
Eaton pulled on her vest and secured it. “I think we’ll follow that gentleman back to his room and have a chat with him tonight.” She adjusted the gun on her hip.
“Works for me.” Bear shrugged.
Eaton put her foot up on the edge of the coffee table and picked up one of the knives sitting there. She pulled up her pant leg, and Zain could only smile when he saw the bright pink socks, she wore under the sheath wrapped around her calf. She put two knives in it and then tucked the third one into the case at her back. When she was done, she picked up her poofy pink jacket and pulled it over the vest. Just like that, she looked like some little fairy sprite going out somewhere. Zain knew was half the men on the S.O. team were afraid of her, so he was definitely following any instruction she gave. Adjusting the earbud, she pulled on a pale pink toque.
“I’ll meet you there.” She smiled and went to the door.
“Should I come with?” Bear yanked his jacket on.
Eaton shook her head. “Best you stay with Zain and Oaklyn.” She smiled. “I’ll be fine.”
The three of them stared at the door when it closed.
“She’s nothing like I thought.” Oaklyn grinned. “What clan is she? I couldn’t place the scent.”
Zain stood up and picked up his coat. “Arctic fox.” He’d looked it up after first seeing her. He shrugged. “I’ve only seen her a few times, but if Tripp Carson is afraid of her, then I’m feeling confident she’s not going to have any problems.”
“Tripp is afraid of her?” Bear stood by the door with his hand on the handle.
Zain nodded. “No one shares why, but half that team is crazy, so—” He shrugged.
“Damn. I hope we get to see her in action.” Bear nodded and went out the door.
Zain put on his glasses. “Ready?”
Oaklyn nodded. “What happens if that man is working for Aiden Tomas?”
Zain went over to the door. “I guess Eaton will call for transport, and he’ll be sitting in an empty room for the rest of his life.” He pulled out his phone and checked that it was connected to the earpiece. Touching it, he opened the door. “We’re on our way there, Brock. Let us know when he leaves.”
“We’re cleaning up a nasty mess, so no rush. One-forms are disgusting animals.”
Zain grinned. “Shout when he’s leaving.”
“I just want a bath to soak this day off my body.” Was the reply they got.
“You deserve it, you hard workin’ man.” Oaklyn smiled at Zain as she spoke over the call.
“You are beautiful, sister.”
Zain closed the door and they both walked to the stairs that would bring them out the back of the building. The good thing about a fancy place like this was none of the guests would ever think about using stairs, so they didn’t worry about running into anyone they’d spoken to when they were pretending to be one of them.
“Oh. Just a heads up, my peeps, I added your name to the guest list of a fund-raising luncheon happening here tomorrow night.”
Zain paused. “You did?”
“I did. Calum told me to get you on some lists. So, I did.”
Zain blew out a breath. “Okay. We’ll get details later.”
“Ten-four. Brock out. I have to take a scrub brush to my bar top. Filthy animals.”
He looked at Oaklyn.
She blew out a breath. “I guess we’ll find out if they know about us tomorrow.”
Zain nodded. “Just as long as Aiden Tomas isn’t there, I think we’ll be fine.” He started walking. “My wolf wants a large piece of him.”
Oaklyn laughed. “He better share with mine. She has plans too.” She went by him and started down the stairs.
Zain stood there for a moment and took a few slow breaths. He knew at some point, he’d be tossed into a room full of people that worked with the Tomas family. He had just hoped it wouldn’t be until the big party when he knew there were fifty or sixty Alliance team members outside as backup.
“Hurry along, Zain. I don’t want to miss Eaton in action,” Oaklyn called up to him.
He, on the other hand, hoped for no action. He wasn’t built for action, he’d decided. He could order the hell out of a complicated supply list, but this sort of thing? He wasn’t so sure.
