Chapter 709 Chapter 709
The ride back to the factory was almost without any conversation. Deva was all right with that. The past few weeks had been non-stop something-urgent-going-on. They’d closed down the island, the boy’s camp. Konner had information to further the objective of finding and stopping any more of their kind being taken.
She rested her head on Taggart’s shoulder, and it felt right. When had she ever had anyone she could say was there for her for anything? Sure, her family and team were, but this was on a whole different level. She was happy with it.
He wrapped his arm around her shoulder and gave her a squeeze like he knew what she’d just thought. Turning her head, she looked at him. He studied her face for a moment and then winked.
“I guess more happened than finding those goons.” Wynter turned in the passenger seat and gave them an amused look.
“I’m glad for it,” Hadleigh said with an amused tone in her voice. “The vibes from the two of you on the way in were pretty tense.”
Taggart chuckled softly.
“Our teams are going to be full of couples soon,” Kenzo said with a grin. “I’m not complaining. It just means we as leaders have fewer to watch over.”
“Except Tripp,” Wynter laughed, “you inherited Amari on that one.”
Kenzo took off his hat and rubbed a hand through his hair. “They get the job done. I just don’t ask how and can’t watch if I’m there.”
Deva grinned. “Amari will always tell you like it is, though, and she’ll jump into the fire for you.”
“No fire jumping for you,” Taggart stated, and she wasn’t sure if he was serious or not.
“I don’t usually get that close to action to worry about the flames.”
“You’re hell with a rifle.” Wynter glanced back at her. “I’m beginning to think Jesse has been hiding a lot of talent on his team.”
Kenzo nodded. “I’m holding out for Noah if he ever wants to switch from retrieval to special ops.”
“Maybe,” Taggart sat up straighter but adjusted how Deva was sitting, so he could still keep his arm around her. “I think when we stop all the bad ones, we no have need for retrieval team.”
Kenzo looked in the mirror at him. “That gives me hope, Taggart, thanks.”
“Why do you want Noah so bad?” Hadleigh yawned.
“If you could see what he can do, you wouldn’t ask that.”
“He’s like the hulk, only doesn’t turn green,” Wynter told her.
“Griffin is the same, Amari says.” Deva nodded.
“Sadly, Griffin is going to have to stay in hiding for a long time until we know all points of Tomas’ organization are shut down.”
“What are we going to do when we’ve won this against Tomas and those ambassadors?” Wynter asked quietly.
“I think that be a long time from now,” Taggart told them. “Is many ambassador on other side of the sea to take out of business.”
“We’ll get them.” Kenzo nodded. “Griffin and Journee brought game-changing info, and now we have the Christmas ball to look forward to.”
“Any more details on that?” Hadleigh asked.
“I’m going to corner Calum or Devin for an update when we get back.” He glanced briefly in the mirror. “I’d like to go home to see my clan for a few days before the holidays because, from the sounds of it, we’re going to be busy until the New Year.”
“There’s more than the ball?” Deva looked out the window, trying to figure out how close they were. Trees and snow weren’t exactly a landmark to remember.
“From the sounds of it. I was talking to Sacha while we loaded everything up, and the location they’re at seems to be a busy spot.”
Wynter turned and looked at Kenzo. “I don’t care if we have to work through all the holidays for the next year if we’re on the winning end of this finally, it’s worth it.” She nodded and looked back out the window.
“Hang on. This hill isn’t fun.”
Deva had enough time to grab the back of the seat in front of her as they started down the incline to the bridge at the factory.
“Hot meal or hot shower first.” Hadleigh grabbed the back of Wynter’s seat. “I can’t decide.”
“Hot coffee.” Deva and Taggart said in unison.
Wynter laughed. “You two are cute together.” She shook her head.
Deva turned to look at Taggart. He had a smile on his face too. She’d noticed the haunting look in his eyes seemed to be less today. She was glad she had done that for him and hoped it lasted—for always, as he’d say.
