Chapter 700 Chapter 700
Wynter came back and squatted down. Kenzo shone a small light on the map she opened across her legs. “Cassius’ guy says they’re searching this area now.” She poked the map.
“We can use the sleds then, but we’ll have to wait until it’s light out again. I’m not navigating through the trees in the dark on one.” Kenzo leaned over and tapped the map. “If we can get to there on them, it will cut a day off walking.”
“We use packs Jesse give us?” Taggart leaned over and looked at the map over top of Wynter’s head.
“How much of our gear can we pull?” Wynter looked at Kenzo.
“They’re a decent size. Jesse said he got the idea from Leah’s family. They used to pull supplies up the mountain with them.”
Wynter grinned. “I can probably pull a fair bit.”
Kenzo chuckled. “Just as long as we don’t happen across some hunters or someone out there. A polar bear hauling their gear around like a toboggan ride might cause questions.”
“I can fly overhead and watch for people.” Hadleigh squatted down and hugged her knees.
“What about their base? Has Cassius’ men found that yet?” Deva looked at the map again. It was such a large area.
“They probably move it when they move to the next search area.” Wynter shrugged. “That’s what I would do.”
“It makes sense.” Kenzo nodded. “Once we find their base—” He looked at Deva. “You and Taggart can move to high ground and keep an eye on things.” He rubbed his hands together. “We need to take them and shut it down all at once, or there’s a chance they’ll get word out to others.”
“Is number of men we look for?” Taggart straightened up and put his hands in his pockets.
“They’ve only seen five, but there could be more back at their base of operation.” Wynter folded the map and stood up. “It’s three hours until it will be light enough for us to travel. I’ll shift and take watch while you all grab some rest.”
“I get packs ready to use.” Taggart nodded.
“I’ll help him.” Deva stood up and looked at Hadleigh. “You can grab a nap. It sounds like you’re going to be in the air a long time when it’s daylight.”
Hadleigh stood up and pulled off her gloves. “That’s okay, I’m used to it. When we’re watching an area, sometimes it’s twenty-four hours before I get a break.”
Deva didn’t know many of the surveillance team, but with the intel and reports the rest of the teams got, she could only assume their job was a hard one. “I think we should separate the gear so whatever Taggart and I are taking is ready to go.”
Kenzo pulled out his phone. “I’ll pull the one with your gear.” He looked at Taggart. “To save your energy. You won’t have the snowmobiles when you’re moving to higher ground.”
Taggart nodded. “Is good plan.” He turned and went over to the truck.
“I’m going to check in with Sacha and Eaton. They’re watching a location that we’re hoping to hit before the Christmas ball.”
Deva didn’t know how many more locations they had from Griffin’s information, but she had no problem missing the holidays with her family if it meant they shut down all of Tomas Aiden’s associates. “I guess we missed out on the plan for that.”
Wynter smiled. “The plan is every single Alliance team member will be in on it, except for the few that are assigned to watch other locations.” She looked at Kenzo. “That’s twenty-five right now, right?”
Kenzo nodded. “Yeah, I think that’s what Devin said. If we can shut down a few more before then, we’ll have more bodies.” He glanced at Taggart and then at Deva. “We have no idea what we’re walking into in that building. With holding cells below it, we could be running into a mess.”
“How much information does Griffin have about inside the building?” Deva looked over to see Taggart laying the canvas on the ground.
“He knows a lot, but now that Tomas knows he’s with us, he could have changed a lot.”
Wynter grinned. “We’ll just have to take some smoke bombs and small charges to blow some doors open.”
Kenzo looked amused. “Unless we fall on someone that can tell us all the details and security inside, we’re taking it all.” He nodded and then walked over to the trees to make his calls.
“I’m going to lay down for a few.” Hadleigh walked over to the truck.
Deva went over to help Taggart. He was holding straps in the air and looking puzzled. “Figure it out?”
He shook his head. “No quite. Jesse say it easy, but I no think it is.”
“Okay. Let’s see if we can figure out which way the straps go.”
He held a thick piece of leather in front of him. “I think this.” He patted his chest. “Is front piece. Is very thick and strong.”
“Makes sense.” She looked at the canvas and then went around to the other side of it. bending down, she lifted the edges. “There are holes for the straps to hook to, so maybe we should put the stuff on it and then pull it up and figure out how it all connects.
“Yes. Good plan.” He grinned. “Is smart idea this pulling big pack. If I know this before life would has been easier some of the time.”
Deva had never needed to travel with more than she required, but she imagined many would have use for it. “It is. I’m just glad we’ll be able to shift and get to the higher ground faster, rather than a long walk in the snow.”
“Yes. Is much better plan then boot full of snow for long walk.”
She smiled. “Not a fan of that.” She went over and opened the tunnel cover on the truck to get the gear out. “Let’s get this sorted and then rest until we have to go.”
