Chapter 669 Chapter 669
“No one home.” It was Wynter’s voice. “Do you think they were spooked and all took off?”
“Surveillance has them coming and going still.” Deva recognized Devin Addison’s voice.
“We have two cars pulling into the lot,” Gia said quietly.
“Turn on your cam, so everyone can get a look at who is in the cars.” Deacon’s voice came through clear.
“Go out and assist, Deacon. I have the last two here.” Wynter told him. “Stay out of sight so they don’t take off.”
Deva blew out a breath. She was tense just watching. She couldn’t imagine how Gia felt right now.
“Weapons can no be seen.” A man with a thick European accent said. Deva had to assume it was Rosh. She glanced over at Taggart. He was staring at the screen with an intense look of focus.
“Two men, one in each car, both carrying briefcases,” Gia reported.
“Griffin?” Kenzo whispered.
“I can’t say until they’re closer,” Griffin answered.
“Hang on,” Gia said softly. The image on the screen showed that she was walking. “Hi.” The two men who were walking beside each other stopped and looked at her. “I think I’m lost. Do you know where Mills Street is?” They looked at each other, and then both shook their head. “Oh, okay. Thanks.” She must have walked away because the image changed.
“The one in the red jacket is a doctor,” Griffin answered.
“A shifter doctor?” Devin asked.
“No. A human one that likes to experiment on shifters.” Griffin’s tone was emotionless.
“Deacon…”
“On it,” Deacon answered. “Rosh, back off and let them enter the building. Gia, look like you’re walking away, and then go get the van and bring it to the back.”
The image changed, and it looked like Gia was jogging.
“Anyone know this gent?” Kenzo asked.
Deva’s gaze jerked back to the top left corner of the monitor. Blair stood there with a man whose hands were bound behind his back.
Calum’s mother leaned forward, and his relaxed stance changed.
“Mom? Do you recognize him?”
“I can’t be…”
Journee sat forward and took his mother’s hand. “He’s been to the island.”
Calum hit a key on the keyboard. “He’s been to the island.”
“I can’t put a name on him, but his face is familiar,” Griffin stated.
“Barn for you,” Kenzo said into the comms.
Blair nodded grabbed the man’s arm and shoved him out of the camera’s view.
Deva looked back to the bottom corner to see if Gia was in the van. She was.
“Ready with the van.”
The screen that was Wynter’s showed two men dropping their briefcases and raising their arms above their heads. Deacon appeared on the screen and shoved the doctor up against the wall. The other man dropped to his knees, his arms over his head.
“Not as fruitful as I’d hoped, but four are better than none,” Wynter reported. “Kenzo, you bring yours down and then help Ender go through the apartments. Dane, bring the other van around. I don’t want them all riding in one vehicle.”
“We’ll keep surveillance on the building,” Devin stated.
“Transferring tech to you, Fallan,” A man said.
“I got it. Five minutes until Kash’s team goes in.” Fallan reported.
Illias stood up, took a wire and plugged it into the other monitor.
“A lot of journals here,” Ender informed everyone. “I’m going to say several in this building were doctors or people that thought they could play God with our kind. Do I clear the ones no one was in?”
“Bring every scrap of paper back—from the entire building,” Devin stated. “Any electronics too.”
“I’m sending the truck to the meet sight, Wynter, for pickup, and then I’ll escort them to the barn.”
“Sounds good, Raymond,” Wynter answered.
Deva sucked in a breath and then exhaled slowly. She looked to see Calum’s mom and Journee were still sitting board straight and staring at the screens.
“Mom,” Calum leaned down closer to her, “do you want a drink or anything?”
“No, I’m fine.” She smiled at him.
A phone rang, and Illias jumped and grabbed the one sitting beside the monitors. “Yeah?” He looked at Calum and then tapped the screen. “Say that again.”
“A car full of men has stopped in three different places along the cliff and are looking through binoculars.” She recognized Slater’s voice. “Can Gideon and Lars do a flyover and check if it’s the guys that left the observation?”
Calum shook his head. “We sent them ahead to check around the camp we’re heading to.” He turned and looked at Creed. Creed nodded and stood up. “I’m sending Creed to you. Then you can point them out to him.” Creed went out onto the deck.
“Okay. We’re moving to make it look like we’re going ashore in a little cove.”
“Stay on the line with Illias, and let us know if anything changes.”
Illias put a bud in his ear and then tapped the screen on the phone.
“How much time until the breech of the house?”
“Three minutes,” Illias answered.
Calum went over to the keyboard and tapped a button. “Devin, the men from the observation point are looking for us. We can’t stay still much longer.”
“Shit. Okay. Kash, you there?”
“We’re ready. We can go in now.” A man replied.
“Do it.” Devin was very blunt.
Illias jumped up and went over and did something on the keyboard, and the second screen was filled with images. There were only two windows this time.
Taggart went over and said something quietly to Calum. When he nodded, Taggart went out the same door Creed had. Deva glanced at the screen and then at the door. She wanted to watch the op, but something inside her needed to know what Taggart was up to. She may not know the man well, but what she already understood about him was he did nothing on a whim.
She found him out on the deck with binoculars looking at the coastline. “What are you doing?”
He didn’t lower them. “If the men can see us, then we too can see them.”
She looked along the shore and then up to where she figured the road was. “There’s not much we can do about it from here.”
Taggart lowered them and looked at her. “No. No from boat.” He raised them to his eyes again.
Deva raised an eyebrow. She looked out over the water and spotted Creed flying in the direction they’d come from. “Creed will find them.”
“Ja. He will, but one bird can no do much against men.” He lowered them and sighed. “I try to reach Lars, see if he come back. He fly fast.”
She looked at the shore again and then back to where everyone was watching the op. “I’m going to see how they’re doing. I’ll be back in a few minutes.”
“Ja.” He pulled his phone out of his pocket.
Deva went back around to the door. Hopefully, someone came up with a plan because it defeated the purpose of taking these people to a secret location if they were leading people right to it.
