Chapter 605 Chapter 605
Asher stared at the building for a minute and then went in the other direction. What was he supposed to say to the prince of the Alliance, the head of security, and Calum? He scowled at the snow-covered ground as he went, Calum, to him, deserved as much respect as the other two. He’d done a lot for so many, Asher included. He’d been a bit out of control when he first started shifting, it had been Calum that had gotten through to him that he was going in the wrong direction with life.
He glanced through the fence to see the same rogue watching him. He didn’t want to be observed right this minute. If he was going to have some kind of breakdown, he wanted it to be private.
His cat was trying to get his attention. In the wrong way, of course, but pausing Asher’s steps as he went. He probably looked like a toy running out of battery power to the rogue watching him. Gritting his teeth, he forced his cat to behave, even if just for a few more minutes. There had to be somewhere private he could stand for a few minutes. Just long enough to wrap his head around this and get himself back on track.
He found what looked like a wind block near one of the back exits and went and stood behind the wall. the only way one of the rogues would see him now was if they were in the air. He looked up just to check. He didn’t see anything.
“Okay,” he took a deep breath and blew it out, puckered lips and everything. “I know, I’m working on it.” His cat was getting pushy and wanted to go back inside, which was a first. There was no sense going to check on Journee right now. After what she just went through, Shaelan probably had her unconscious. His cat reminded him about the other men that were going to talk to her. He couldn’t wait for long.
If he just knew more about her and her family. Pulling out his phone, he stared at it. Illias told Noah that calls were secure. He hoped so. He knew the number by heart and had never had to put it in his phone. Tapping the screen, he dialed it, blew out a quick short breath, and put the phone to his ear.
“Nan.” He smiled even though she couldn’t see him.
“Asher, this is nice. I didn’t expect to hear from you so soon.”
Guilt shot through him like it was an arrow. He should check in with her more often. “I know. We’re in between right now, so I thought I’d let you know that Journee arrived and is doing better.”
“Oh. That’s good news. I was worried about her.”
And just like that, the door he didn’t know he’d been looking for opened. “I don’t remember her or her family.”
“They weren’t from our clan if I recall.” There was a short pause, “Yes, they came from the States, I don’t remember exactly when.”
“Just her family?”
“Oh no, there were a few cousins and others. I want to say there were fifteen of them. Some moved on from this clan and went East to another clan of like, but her family stayed.”
“Is there any of them left?”
There was a short pause. “No, the last few relatives moved East right after,” she made a clicking noise with her tongue, “her folks were killed, Asher and the two girls vanished.”
“Was she the girl that was a bit,” he almost said weird but would have been chastised for that, “different? Wasn’t big on playing but would rather be exploring instead.”
“Yes. Oh, I’d forgotten that. She was a curious one.” More clicking, “Have you talked to her? Does she have news of the others that were taken that day?”
“No. The medical team kept her in her cat form until a while ago when she shifted, now they have her sleeping so they can set her leg.”
“Oh my goodness, that sounds painful.”
“I imagine it is.” He didn’t want to keep asking about her but needed to know.
“Nan, what was her family like?”
“They worked hard for the clan but kept to themselves otherwise. I never heard any details, but they went through some hard things where their clan was from. I once heard the Alpha cursing and saying someone needed to go down there and straighten out their leaders. If you wanted to know more, you would have to talk to Alvin about it.”
“No, Nan, I was just curious.”
“I’m happy she made it back.” There was a banging noise, “Oh, for Pete’s sake, I’m going to have to go, I think that Tommy Denton just bounced a puck off my house.”
Asher grinned; he remembered getting told what for from his grandmother for similar things. “I’ll call you in a few days, Nan.”
“I never have to worry about you being honorable. You always are. You be safe, my boy.”
“I will.” He waited until she hung up before lowering his phone. The Alliance should have information about her original clan. He nodded, and now he was ready to talk to Devin and find out more. He turned around, looked at the door, and wondered where it went in the factory. If he was going to be here often, he needed to know the layout.
He went over and tried the door. It was unlocked. Pulling the door open, he stepped inside. Rows of metal shelves filled with boxes. They were covered in dust. How long had the king been working on this place? Walking to the end, he spotted two doors. Choosing the closest, he went over and opened it. Now he was in a room with long tables but no chairs.
A door opened, and Webb came in. “Oh hey, more help. Perfect.”
“Help?”
Leyton walked in behind him, “the women are going to make up more kits for the teams,” he shrugged, “med supplies and other stuff. We said we’d get all the supplies out of the warehouse.”
Asher glanced at the door he’d just come through. Warehouse. Made sense. He wanted to go find Devin, but travel kits were also essential. He needed to take inventory of supplies in the van.
Webb waved a sheet of paper around, “I have the list.”
Asher turned around and went back into the warehouse. “What’s first?”
Webb stopped and looked at it, “Biotrien says ten packs per kit.”
Asher walked down one of the aisles, reading the boxes. “That’s the stuff for the water clan, right?”
“Yes. Shaelan says everyone has to have it.”
Finding a box, he picked it up.
“What’s next?” Leyton looked over Webb’s shoulder.
“Saline and syringes.” Webb grimaced, “I hope they don’t expect me to stick a needle in someone.”
Asher set the box on one of the tables and waited for the next item.
“I heard they’re going to be sending more trained medical staff out with us, especially during ops.” Leyton came back in and set the two boxes on the table.
“That’s a good idea.” Webb nodded, “That will save Shaelan from trying to look after everyone when we have more than one op going.” He shrugged, “I was her transport last time, and getting her from one place to another was fast and furious.”
Asher nodded, “next, I need to catch up with Devin.”
“We have this if you need to be somewhere else.” Leyton shrugged, “This is a holiday until we’re sent back out.”
Asher wondered if they knew when that was but didn’t want to ask because he needed to catch Devin before they went to talk to Journee. “If you guys are sure.”
Both men shrugged.
“Cool. Thanks.” He headed out the door he’d seen them come in, hoping it led to somewhere he recognized.
